Anteater Club Sports Weekly Wrap-Up: 11/15-11/16

Men’s & Women’s Lacrosse Kick Off Their Seasons

Women’s Lacrosse vs CSUF: Women’s Lacrosse started it off Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory over visiting Cal State Fullerton.

Despite a slow start to the game, Club President Jackie Bishop said the team was able to pick it up by the second half.

Bishop was joined by Kendall Walker, Jenna Weinstein, Pauline Hua, and Nina Fang on the score sheet for the Eaters in support of their goalkeepers who made some tough saves to preserve the win.

“The new girls did a great job for their first game ever, and we loved seeing all of the girls get some playing time!” said Bishop.

The ladies will next be in action at the Santa Barbara November 22.

Men’s Lacrosse vs UCI Alumni: The Men’s squad had a special weekend, as they welcomed back former Eaters for their annual Alumni Match.

Eager to show off how they’ve progressed and improved, the team put in a strong performance against their predecessors. Unfortunately for them, the alumni came ready to play, pulling off a 7-6 upset over their younger counterparts.

But it was all fun and games postgame, with the teams coming together for a bit of a mixer and a good time.

Current club president Kyle Maresco stressed the importance of holding this kind of event, and bridging together the old and new teams’ cultures as a way of respecting the program the alumni helped build.

On the field for the alumni was former club president John Fox, who headed the club to the 1994 WCLL title, as well as that year’s UCI Club Sport of the Year award.

Recalling the team’s championship run, Fox described the hard, but fun work, he and his teammates put in.

“This team has great kids with real positive attitudes playing together. And they’re playing above their level,” Fox expressed about the current program.

Despite the loss, head coach Tim Fox was feeling pretty good having gotten the opportunity to try some new schemes and shoo away some of the lingering butterflies in the new players’ stomachs.

“We wanted to give the new guys experience and give the experienced players their first looks of the season,” he said.

“We have a core of 12 to 15 really strong players and about 5 or 6 new guys who are picking up the sport really quickly.”

And as with any new team, “It’s about working out the kinks,” as club president Ian Larson (2010-2012), who now serves as an assistant coach for the current team, put it.

“We want to make them fall in love with the game, and pass the values that our coaches passed onto us,” Larson said.

Men’s Lacrosse will next take the field after the Thanksgiving break, December 7, welcoming UC San Diego and Long Beach State for a pair of games.

Badminton Opens Up Season at UCSD Tournament UCI Badminton traveled to UC San Diego for a preseason tournament this weekend. The Eaters competed against schools from all around Southern California, and finished no lower than the quarterfinals in all formats but Men’s Doubles.

Marvin Lin and Cally Chung were crowned champions of the Mixed Doubles bracket, and Lin was also first runner-up in Men’s Singles. Chung teamed up with Ally Vo for a semifinal finish in Women’s Doubles, with the team of Kimmy Ny and Michelle Tran finishing in the quarters. Ny and Connie Ooi both featured in the quarterfinals in Women’s Singles.

Great job all around, Eaters!
