In his first season with the Pirates, Lewis guided his team to a third-place finish in the 2009 MEAC Indoor Championships, seeing two of his athletes – Reggie Dixon (60-meter dash) and David Kimani (mile run) –

take home event titles. Dixon also ran in the 200-meter dash in the NCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 10th.

The Pirates would follow that up with a second-place finish in the 2009 MEAC Outdoor Championships,

where Dixon won the conference title in the 200-meter dash. Dixon would also qualify for the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships under Lewis’ leadership.

Lewis came to Hampton from Delaware State, where he spent the last three years as an assistant coach

with the men’s cross country and track & field teams. Prior to his work at Delaware State, Lewis spent 2002-2005 as an assistant coach with the women’s team at Eastern Michigan University. While at Eastern Michigan, Lewis coached sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events, while also recruiting and advising 2011-12 TOP MEAC MEN’S student-athletes. He coached four All-Americans, one NCAA regional champion and saw Eastern Michi- INDOOR TIMES/MARKS gan finish 16th in the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. After leading the cross country team to a third-place finish in the MEAC, Pierce led the Lady Pirates to

MEAC titles in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2008-09, while also coaching Francena McCorory to the third NCAA title in program history. McCorory, who was already a MEAC indoor champion in the 400-meter dash, won the NCAA title in that same event, running a 51.55. McCorory would add a MEAC outdoor crown and an NCAA Regional outdoor title in that same event.

Pierce, the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women’s Head Coach of the Year for the indoor season, was the Most Outstanding Coach in both MEAC meets during the 2008-09 season.

After leading the Lady Pirates to a second-place finish in the 2007 MEAC cross country championships behind Maryland-Eastern Shore, Pierce led the team to a share of the indoor track &field title with UMES. It was the sixth straight indoor crown for Hampton, which tied with the Lady Hawks with 92 points. The Lady Pirates won seven individual titles throughout the indoor season including freshman Racquel Vas- sell’s win in the 60-meter dash at the University of Maryland Terrapin Invitational.

The dominance continued into the outdoor season, as the Lady Pirates took home their third straight MEAC title. Vassell was named MEAC MVP after winning the 100- and 200-meter dash, while Francena

McCorory won the 400-meter dash and Rachel Lewis became an NCAA qualifier in the triple jump. 2011-12 TOP MEAC WOMEN’S

2011-12 MEAC TRACK FACTS A FIRST FOR COACH LEWIS When the Pirates won the team title at the Virginia Union Invite in Richmond, Va. on Sept. 23, it marked 2010-11 MEAC CHAMPIONS the first time under head coach Steven Lewis that the team had won a team meet title — of any sort. Men’s Cross Country Hampton finished with 29 points that day, as junior Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) finished second overall Norfolk State with a 29:45.00. Women’s Cross Country Hampton Hampton repeated the feat on Oct. 14, winning the Panther Cross Country Classic, also in Richmond, Va., Men’s Indoor Track & Field Norfolk State with 26 points. Sophomore Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the fast Pirate in this meet, completing Women’s Indoor Track & Field the 8K course in 29:20.00 to come in third. Hampton Men’s Outdoor Track & Field The Pirates also finished third in the Great American HBCU Invitational on Oct. 1 and fourth in the UMES Norfolk State Lid-Lifter Invite to open the season on Sept. 3. Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Norfolk State FROM THE GRIDIRON TO THE TRACK Seniors Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) and Devan Clark (Lorton, Va.) have already been busy for the 2011-12 MEAC CHAMPIONS Pirates so far this season, with both competing on the Hampton University football team that went 7-4 Men’s Cross Country Norfolk State overall and finished 5-3 in the MEAC. Women’s Cross Country Hampton Dixon put his speed to use as a kick returner this season, returning seven kickoffs for 152 yards on the season — averaging 21.7 yards per return.

Clark, meanwhile, recorded six tackles on the season.

Clark transferred to Hampton from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he also played football and performed on the track & field. As a freshman, Clark was named All-East in track & field, before earning All-

PIRATES FINISH EIGHTH IN MEAC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS HAMPTON IN THE MEAC The men’s cross country team came in eighth in the 2011 MEAC Cross Country Championships, which were held on Oct. 29 on the campus of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md. The Pirates fin- ished with 216 points. MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TITLES 1996 Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) turned in the best finish of the meet for the Pirates, finishing the 8K race in 27:51.26 to come in 21st. Je’Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) ran a 29:21.21 to finish 45th, while Jaleel WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TITLES Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) came in 49th with a 29:57.92. 2004 2006 2010 Larry Ramirez (Pleasantville, N.J.) ran a 30:33.22 to finish 54th, while Edose Ibadin (Glendale, Md.) came 2011 in 55th with a 30:38.12 and Evan Williams (Audobon, Pa.) finished 62nd with a time of 31:07.40. WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK TITLES 2000-01 Sophomore Larry Ramirez (Pleasantville, N.J.) was the lone Pirate to earn the honor, while junior Shaq- 2002-03 uanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) and sophomore Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) each earned the 2003-04 honor for the Lady Pirates. 2004-05 2005-06 In all, 81 student-athletes from the conference’s 13 member institutions were recognized. 2006-07 2007-08 PIRATES AND LADY PIRATES BREAKING SCHOOL RECORDS 2008-09* When Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) broke the school record in the 60-meter dash with a 6.58 at the Penn 2010-11 State Nationals, it marked the second time last season that he’d set that mark; he’d ran a then-record 6.65 MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK TITLES at the New York City Gotham Cup. 1999 2003 Former Pirate Ivann Parker set a school record in the weight throw earlier this season at 14.82 me-ters at 2004 the Navy Invitational, while Damon Dixon broke the men’s heptathlon school record for the third time in his career with 5,312 points at the Penn State Nationals. SCHOOLS IN THE MEAC PIERCE COACHED ONE OF AMERICA’S OWN IN Bethune-Cookman Team USA athlete David Payne, under the tutelage of Hampton University women's track & field coach Coppin State Maurice Pierce, finished second in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles in the Summer Games of the 29th Delaware State Olympiad at the National Stadium, earning a silver medal in the summer of 2008. Florida A&M Hampton Payne finished with a time of 13.17, .01 seconds ahead of American David Oliver, who took bronze. Howard Cuba's Dayron Robles won the gold medal with a time of 12.93, just .02 seconds off the Olympic record. Maryland Eastern Shore Morgan State Payne is the first athlete Pierce has coached to earn an Olympic medal. HAMPTON TRACK’S TIES WITH EASTERN MICHIGAN Pirates head coach Steven Lewis has connections with his coaching staff beyond their collaboration at Hampton; when Lewis was an assistant coach for the women’s track & field program at Eastern Michigan, current assistant coaches Patrice Beasley and Lela V. Nelson were star athletes for the Eagles.

Beasley, the 2006 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Athlete of the Year, was a star sprinter at Eastern Michigan, and she helped the indoor 4x400- meter relay team, as well as the outdoor 4x100-meter relay and 4x200-meter relay teams set school records. Nelson set seven school records at Eastern Michigan, including 5,878 points in the heptathlon when she won the NCAA title in 2005. She was also an All-American in the long jump that year.

PIRATES IN THE 2010-11 MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS After finishing fourth in the 2010 MEAC Cross Country Championships, the Pirate turned in a second-place effort in the 2010-11 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, which were held Feb. 17-19 in Landover, Md. It was Hampton’s second straight top-two finish on the men’s side, and former Pirate Damon Dixon was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Field Performer, winning the MEAC title in both the pole vault and the heptathlon.

Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) won the MEAC indoor title in the 60-meter dash, setting a MEAC record with a time of 6.69.

The Pirates then finished fourth in the 2011 MEAC Outdoor Championships, held in Greensboro, N.C. on May 6-8. Damon Dixon again earned Most Outstanding Field Performer honors, winning the pole vault to give Hampton its only individual title on the men’s side.

LADY PIRATES IN THE 2010-11 MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS The Lady Pirates kicked off 2010-11 with a bang, winning the MEAC cross country title for the first time since 2006, as four Lady Pirates earned All- MEAC honors. Hampton them took the MEAC indoor track & field crown, their eighth overall, before finishing second by just two points to Norfolk State in the MEAC Outdoor Championships.

Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned Most Outstanding Field Performer honors, while former Lady Pirate Racquel Vassell shared Most Outstanding Runner honors. Denmark finished second in both the long jump and the triple jump at the MEAC Indoor Championships, while Vassell won MEAC titles in the 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay.

The Lady Pirates won four event titles in the MEAC Outdoor Championships, highlighted by a gold-medal effort in the 4x400-meter relay. Vassell won the 100-meter hurdles title, while then-freshman Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) took the 1,500-meter run and Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the high jump.
