Out.—Pirates 5th, Lady Pirates MEAC Champs The Pirates’ 4x800-meter relay team ran a season-best 7:32.52 to finish fourth, while the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay team came in eighth with a 3:24.25. www.hamptonpirates.com 2010-11 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY TRACK & FIELD PIRATES TRACK PIRATES HEAD COACH STEVEN LEWIS 2010-11 OUTDOOR SEASON Steven Lewis enters his third season as the men’s cross country and track & field coach at Hampton BEST TIMES/MARKS University. Lewis brings over 40 years of coaching experience to the Pirate family, taking over a program looking to ascend into the upper echelon of the MEAC. 100m R. Dixon 10.33 200m A. Anderson 21.13 Lewis’ second season with the Pirates saw sophomore Reggie Dixon finish seventh in the 100-meter 400m J. Hutchison 48.45 dash at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a 10.39 to become the first 800m B. Burton 1:52.90 Pirate under Lewis to earn All-American honors. This came after the Pirates finished fifth in the MEAC 3000SC M. Davenport 10:10.04 Outdoor Championships, the 4x100-meter relay squad setting a MEAC record in winning the race with a 1500m X. Parker 14.99m The Pirates finished second in the MEAC Indoor Championships, with Damon Dixon earning the meet’s Javelin D. Dixon 40.54m Most Outstanding Field Performer award after winning the men’s heptathlon and finishing second in the Dec. B. Taylor 5,242 high jump and pole vault. David Kimani also took the MEAC indoor title in the 3,000-meter run. Kimani also earned All-MEAC honors in cross country, finishing eighth in the 2009 MEAC Champion- ships with a 26:36.10 as the Pirates came in sixth overall. 2010-11 OUTDOOR SEASON In his first season with the Pirates, Lewis guided his team to a third-place finish in the 2009 MEAC Indoor INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS Championships, seeing two of his athletes – Reggie Dixon (60-meter dash) and David Kimani (mile run) – take home event titles. Dixon also ran in the 200-meter dash in the NCAA Indoor Championships, fin- Alabama Relays (March 24-27, 2011) ishing 10th. R. Dixon 100m 10.33 A. Anderson 200m 21.13 Hampton ‘A’ 4x400 3:14.99 The Pirates would follow that up with a second-place finish in the 2009 MEAC Outdoor Championships, 4x800 7:40.45 where Dixon won the conference title in the 200-meter dash. Dixon would also qualify for the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships under Lewis’ leadership. Lewis came to Hampton from Delaware State, where he spent the last three years as an assistant coach 2010-11 INDOOR SEASON with the men’s cross country and track & field teams. Prior to his work at Delaware State, Lewis spent INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONS 2002-2005 as an assistant coach with the women’s team at Eastern Michigan University. While at East- ern Michigan, Lewis coached sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events, while also recruiting and Navy Invitational (Dec. 4, 2010) advising student-athletes. He coached four All-Americans, one NCAA regional champion and saw East- R. Dixon 60m 6.70 ern Michigan finish 16th in the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. 200m 21.11 D. Dixon HJ 2.04m Lewis arrived at the University of Pittsburgh in 1982, where he spent 20 years as head coach for both the Hampton ‘A’ 4x800 7:53.77 men’s and women’s teams. His Panther squads won five Big East conference titles, and in 1998 Pitt’s Golden Flash Gala (Dec. 10-11, 2010) R. Dixon 60m 6.68 women’s track & field team finished third in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Throughout 200m 21.31 his career at Pitt, Lewis coached 11 individual NCAA champions and 67 All-Americans. Forty men and P. Walker 60h 8.01 95 women won Big East individual championships under Lewis’ direction. Penn State Relays (Jan. 8, 2011) A. Anderson 60m 6.82 Lewis is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. and a 1964 graduate of what is now Norfolk State University. D. Dixon 60h 8.12 NYC Gotham Cup (Jan. 14, 2011) HAMPTON TRACK’S TIES WITH EASTERN MICHIGAN R. Dixon 60m 6.65 Penn State Nationals (Jan. 28-29, 2011) Pirates head coach Steven Lewis has connections with his coaching staff beyond their collaboration at R. Dixon 60m 6.58 Hampton; when Lewis was an assistant coach for the women’s track & field program at Eastern Michi- J. Hutchison 400m 48.41 gan, current assistant coaches Patrice Beasley and Lela V. Nelson were star athletes for the Eagles. D. Dixon Hept. 5,312 New Balance Coll. (Feb. 4-5, 2011) Beasley, the 2006 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Athlete of the Year, was a star sprinter at Eastern D. Dixon HJ-E 2.09m Michigan, and she helped the indoor 4x400-meter relay team, as well as the outdoor 4x100-meter relay MEAC Indoor (Feb. 17-19, 2011) and 4x200-meter relay teams set school records. R. Dixon Pole 4.03m Nelson set seven school records at Eastern Michigan, including 5,878 points in the heptathlon when she Hept. 5,029 IC4A indoor (March 5-6, 2011) won the NCAA title in 2005. She was also an All-American in the long jump that year. R.
