Blue Note Jazz Club Announces New Summer Festival Blue Note Jazz Club Announces New Summer Festival By Della Hasselle April 18, 2011 MANHATTAN – Step aside JazzFest and Montreux Jazz Festival, Greenwich Village is about to get its own jazz festival starting this June, according to reports. In honor of its 30th anniversary, the Village's esteemed Blue Note Jazz Club will run the first-ever Blue Note Jazz Festival throughout the month of June at its location on West 3rd Street and Sixth Avenue, according to Blue Note Website.The festival will also include additional concerts at Central Park's Summerstage and Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall, which is also the home of the famous Jazz at Lincoln Center festival. The festival will also extend to other venues throughout the city, and have over 80 shows at Manhattan theaters including Beacon Theatre, Town Hall, BB King Blues Club and Grill, Highline Ballroom, Terminal 5, the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, and many others. High-profile New York jazz greats Dave Brubeck, Chris Botti, Nancy Wilson and Bobby McFerrin will headline the club's first festival. The festival will also reach out to younger audiences by including contemporary non-jazz acts on the lineup, including the hip hop/soul band The Roots, Duncan Sheik, and Cowboy Mouth, the Wall Street Journal reported. "Over the past five years, we’ve adapted to changes in music," Steven Bensusan, president of Blue Note, told the Journal. "We’ve paired hip hop and jazz, for example. We want to mix up the elements." Blue Note hopes its festival will stand in for the New York Jazz Festival, which is on hiatus this year, the Journal reported. If the performances are successful, however, the show may make more appearances in the future. "This isn’t a dead industry," Bensusan told the paper. .

This thesis explores how Jazz developed in Israel and the role education played. Jazz Education in Israel discusses the origin of educational programs such as the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music (1985) and the New School Jazz Program (1986). One question that was imperative to this study was attempting to discover exactly how Jazz became a cultural import and export within Israel. Through interviews included in this thesis, this study uncovers just that. The interviews include figures such as Tal Ronen, Dr. Arnon Palty, Dr. Alona Sagee, and Keren Yair Dagan. As technology gets more advanced and the world gets smaller, Jazz finds itself playing a larger role in humanity as a whole. iii Preface The idea for this thesis came to me when I was traveling abroad during the summer of 2015. I was enjoying sightseeing throughout the streets of Ben Yehuda Jerusalem contemplating topics when all of a sudden I came across a jam session. I went over to listen to the music and was extremely surprised to find musicians from all parts of Europe coming together in a small Jazz venue in Israel playing bebop standards at break-neck speeds.

Dave Brubeck called him a “great pianist” and JazzTimes “a formidable improviser who lives in the moment.” He is a graduate of the Bela Bartok Conservatory, the ELTE Science University (in his native Hungary) and Berklee College of Music. In 1987, Gardony won first prize at the Great American Jazz Piano Competition. A long-time professor of Piano at Berklee, he leads his trio of ten years: bassist John Lockwood and drummer Yoron Israel, as well as his quartet and sextet. He has performed and recorded with Yoron Israel’s “High Standards,” Matt Glaser’s “Wayfaring Strangers” and toured with David “Fathead” Newman and the Boston Pops. Signed to Sunnyside Records, Laszlo has been recording for over 25 years. He has collaborated with such musicians as Dave Holland and Miroslav Vitous on his early recordings for the Antilles label. Yes, the endowed chair is nice, but “professor of the arts” and “advisor in creative practice” seem to sum up the man. It’s fitting that the terminology here is not “jazz studies” or “theory and practice,” but rather, “the arts” and “critical inquiry.” For Iyer—winner of the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll categories Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Group (for his namesake sextet)—jazz doesn’t exist in isolation. Which is another reason why the appointment at Harvard, with its core liberal arts program, suits the 46-year-old pianist’s particular take on jazz, on music, on the arts and on the world. A child of immigrants, and the winner of multiple accolades—including a handful of previous DownBeat Critics Poll wins with his longstanding trio (with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore) and a 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship— Iyer began his academic career as a scientist.
