The Dababiya Core: A window into Paleocene to Early Eocene depositional history in Egypt basedoncoccolithstratigraphy Marie-Pierre Aubry1 and Rehab Salem1,2 1Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Rutgers University, 610 Taylor Road, NJ 08854-8066, USA email: [email protected] 2Geology Department, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, 31527, Tanta, Egypt [email protected] ABSTRACT: The composite Paleocene-lower Eocene Dababiya section recovered in the Dababiya Quarry core and accessible in out- crop in the Dababiya Quarry exhibits an unexpected contrast in thickness between the Lower Eocene succession (~Esna Shales) and the Paleocene one (~Dakhla Shales and Tarawan Chalk). We investigate the significance of this contrast by reviewing calcareous nannofossil stratigraphic studies performed on sections throughout Egypt. We show that a regional pattern occurs, and distinguish six areas—Nile Valley, Eastern Desert and western Sinai, Central and eastern Sinai, northern Egypt and Western Desert. Based on patterns related to thicknesses of selected lithobiostratigraphic intervals and distribution of main stratigraphic gaps, we propose that the differences in the stratigraphic architecture between these regions result from differential latest Paleocene and Early Eocene subsidence following intense Middle to Late Paleocene tectonic activity in the Syrian Arc folds as a result of the closure of the Neo-Tethys. Royal Palm Road, Suite 103 Phoenix, Arizona 85021 August 2004 2 ABSTRACT Soils of abandoned mines on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge (KNWR) are contaminated with arsenic, barium, mercury, manganese, lead, and zinc. Previous studies have shown that trace element and metal concentrations in bats were elevated above threshold concentrations. High trace element and metal concentrations in bats suggested that bighorn sheep also may be exposed to these contaminants when using abandoned mines as resting areas. We found evidence of bighorn sheep use, bighorn sheep carcasses, and scat in several abandoned mines. To determine whether bighorn sheep are exposed to, and are accumulating hazardous levels of metals while using abandoned mines, we collected soil samples, as well as scat and bone samples when available. We compared mine soil concentrations to Arizona non-residential clean up levels. Hazard quotients were elevated in several mines and elevated for manganese in one Sheep Tank Mine sample. We analyzed bighorn sheep tissues for trace elements. We obtained blood, liver, and bone samples from hunter-harvested bighorn in 2000 and 2001. Arizona Game and Fish Department also collected blood from bighorn during a translocation operation in 2001. Iron and magnesium were elevated in tissues compared to reference literature concentrations in other species. Most often, domestic sheep baseline levels were used for comparison because of limited available data for bighorn sheep. -

These books have set the national standard for geologic guidebooks and are an essential geologic reference for anyone working in or around New Mexico. Free Downloads NMGS has decided to make peer-reviewed papers from our Fall Field Conference guidebooks available for free download. Non-members will have access to guidebook papers two years after publication. Members have access to all papers. This is in keeping with our mission of promoting interest, research, and cooperation regarding geology in New Mexico. However, guidebook sales represent a significant proportion of our operating budget. Therefore, only research papers are available for download. DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE TARAHUMARA FROG, SYCAMORE AND BIG CASA BLANCA CANYONS, SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, ARIZONA Prepared By: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2321 West Royal Palm Road, Suite 103 Phoenix, Arizona 85021 Date Prepared: September 1, 2003 Section I: PURPOSE AND NEED FOR ACTION A. Purpose of the Proposed Action: The purpose of the proposed action is to conserve the Tarahumara frog (Rana tarahumarae). Conservation would reduce threats to the species and minimize the likelihood that it would need protection under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (16 U.S.C. 1531-1544), as amended (ESA). Our ability to effectively conserve and manage this species is limited because it has been extirpated from Arizona and the United States since 1983. This action would be undertaken cooperatively by the Arizona Ecological Services Office of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (AESO) and the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD), in coordination with the Tarahumara Frog Conservation Team (TFCT). The TFCT, which was first convened in 1991, consists of representatives from AGFD, AESO, Coronado National Forest, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, U.S. Geological Survey - Biological Resources Division, Instituto del Medio Ambiente y el Desarrollo Sustentable del Estado de Sonora (IMADES), University of Arizona, and other interested parties. Both the AGFD and AESO have an interest in re-establishing species extirpated from Arizona. B. Need for Taking the Proposed Action: Conservation through re-establishment of the Tarahumara frog in Arizona is consistent with the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Wildlife 2006 Nongame and Endangered Wildlife subprogram narrative, a goal of which is restoration of native biological diversity and recovery of imperiled species. -
