The West Georgia Wolves have had a doozy of a road trip, not playing a game in the friendly confines of Grisham Stadium since the first game of the season on August 26. Since that time, the Wolves have traveled over 2600 miles, playing three different opponents with a combined record of 11-4 on the season. Last week, West Georgia's trip took them to Arkadelphia, AR, to take on the Henderson State Reddies. The Wolves mustered three field goals off of the foot of freshman kicker Casey Hale, but a late Reddie touchdown proved to be the game-winner, as HSU took the 16-9 victory. Against the Reddies, the Wolves faced a running quarterback in Garrett Manning, who rushed for 126 yards against West Georgia. In the Bison, UWG takes on the top running back in the Gulf South Conference in Kyle Wess.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 43, No. 2, Feb. 27, 2004) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Jeff Hurd Before basketball’s March Madness descends upon us, it is a little amazing that some Division I baseball teams are approaching the 20-game mark (notably Kansas at 9-7-1 through Feb. 23 and Cal Poly at 12- 4 prior to its Feb. 25-29 games). Before you know it, the NCAA Regionals will be upon us. This absolutely is one of the busiest but most intriguing times of the college sports year with as many as 10-12 sports occurring simultaneously from baseball to men’s volleyball to golf to indoor track to gosh- knows-what. It’s also refreshing to welcome the initial 2004 NCAA Division II NCBWA poll to this month’s newsletter and to see some of the baseball teams from cooler weather regions migrating south for the annual ritual of spring break baseball. The incessant pings of the aluminum bats remind us that the sights and smells of springtime and conference baseball cannot be far off; enjoy and sneak out of the arenas when time permits for some great diamond activity. Sincerely, Jeff Hurd - NCBWA President - Western Athletic Conference NCBWA Division I Players of Week The NCBWA Division I National Players of the Week are into their third week of the 2004 season. Nominees for the aw2ard are taken from Conference players of the week and announced on Tuesday. NCBWA Vice-President Mike Montoro of Southern Miss ([email protected]) coordinates the weekly awards.

Billy Dorgan, Jr. Student-Per Billy Dorgan, Jr. Delta State University student-athletes can now be the best they can be in the classroom and on the field. The Billy Dorgan, Jr., Student Performance Center became a reality thanks to a $1 million donation by Billy and Patty Dorgan, Sr., in the spring of 2002. The Dorgans’ great generosity was due in large part to Billy Dorgan, Jr.’s great academic and athletic experience at Delta State University from 1999–2000. The state-of-the-art complex totals 15,605 square feet. A free- weight area, a general excercise area, and storage make up the first floor of the center. Two academic labs, a conference room, coaches’ and athletic director’s offices are on the second floor. The Dorgan Center was completed on February 18, 2005 and is currently online and in use by all 13 DSU athletic programs. Billy Dorgan, Jr., was a standout place kicker for the Delta State University football program from 1999–2000. He helped the Statesmen to the 2000 Gulf South Conference and NCAA Division II National Championships. He owns the DSU and GSC formance Cent record for point-after-touchdowns kicked in a season record with 71 in 2000. He ranks third on the single-season scoring list with 109 points, and his 128 career points scored is 11th on DSU’s all-time list. He kicked 81 career PATs, ranking him second on the career PATs list. Dorgan, Jr., set the DSU record for field goals made in a season with 13, but none were more important than the game winner that beat Southern Arkansas, 30-28, in 2000.
