Housing Association properties in Sheffield Updated 7 July 2016 Housing Associations (or Registered Housing Providers) are independent, not for profit housing organisations of varying sizes which are registered with and regulated by the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency. In Sheffield, Housing Associations own and manage around 18,000 properties across the city between them. This compares with around 40,000 properties owned and managed by Sheffield City Council. Some Housing Associations specialise in housing certain groups of people, such as older people, while others provide housing for all. Housing Associations normally give priority when letting their homes to those with the most urgent housing need but some also give priority to working households or for other reasons. Some Housing Associations advertise and let all their properties through Sheffield Council’s Sheffield Property Shop website at http://www.sheffieldpropertyshop.org.uk. The Property Shop is located inside First Point at Howden House on Union Street, Sheffield, S1 2SH and some of the properties advertised are displayed in the window there. To bid for Housing Association or Council properties advertised through the Property Shop, you need to join the Council’s Housing Register. Applying to join the Housing Register must be done online through the Sheffield Property Shop. If you need access to a computer to join the Housing Register, to view properties or to make bids, computers are available at the Property Shop in Howden House, Union Street, S1 2SH, at any other First Point or Local Housing Office and at some libraries. You can get help with the online registration process at the Property Shop too. Once you are registered you will be able to bid online, by automated phone line or by text. If you need help with joining the Housing Register, advice on your housing options or with placing a bid, please contact the Council Housing Service by phone. Telephone 0114 293 0000 or 0114 205 3333. Some Housing Associations have their own application process as well as letting their properties through the Property Shop, so you can register with them directly. However, even where a Housing Association has its own process, they will usually still let a proportion of their properties to people who are on the Council’s Housing Register.
