Commuters are transported directly to Waterloo from Walton-on-Thames and Hersham stations (0.5 miles and 1.3 miles respectively), with four capital- bound trains leaving every hour. Regular bus services link Hersham to nearby towns such as Weybridge, Molesey and Kingston-upon-Thames. This pretty pocket of South East England is where you’ll find some of the UK’s top rated schools, adding to its appeal for young families. Lush parks and the charming riverside setting make for perfect picnic days out, while a plethora of high-end sports facilities provide plenty of opportunity for active fun. Nearby are Weybridge, Esher and Cobham – all highly desirable hotspots in the affluent borough of Elmbridge. And although Elizabeth Park offers the very best of suburban living, it’s also a commuter’s dream: the capital is less than half an hour away by rail. 10 RELAX AND UNWIND Residents of Elizabeth Park don’t have to venture far for global eats. Walton’s best-loved Italian restaurant, Prima Fila, serves up delicious dishes such as seafood risotto and grilled fillet steak among intimate, candlelit surroundings. Another popular spot is The Everyman, a boutique cinema showcasing the best arthouse releases and one-of-a-kind theatre productions. At The Heart, Carluccio’s and Wagamama are very reliable classics. But for a real taste of Walton-on-Thames living, head to the riverside pubs such as The Anglers or The Swan for scenic al fresco pints and sumptuous Sunday roasts. Meanwhile in Cobham, an offshoot of London celebrity haunt, The Ivy, offers all-day dining and designer interiors within a beautiful grade II listed building. Esher is also a culinary destination, its High Street lined with top-class eateries including Paris inspired Côte Brasserie, the cantina style Red Peppers and The Giggling Squid, featuring Thai tapas and a modern, wood-lined interior. 12 13 A244 B375 LOCAL HIGHLIGHTS Cafes & Restaurants 01 The 1955 Club 02 Carluccio's RIVER QUEEN ELIZABETH II 03 Coppadocia THAMES STORAGE RESERVOIR 04 Hello Sushi 25 05 La Terraza Tapas 06 Pizza Express 07 Prima Fila 08 The Royal George 09 The Gingerbread WALTON-ON-THAMES Man Bakery A244 10 The Walton Village 11 Wagamama 19 12 Buenasado Argentine Steakhouse 07 17 18 A244 11 01 Shops A3050 13 Sainsbury’s 10 28 14 Tesco Express Walton Lane 12 13 15 06 20 Culture & Leisure 02 03 A244 15 Everyman Cinema Molesey Road B365 Rydens Road 16 Hersham Library Banks Oatlands Drive 23 17 Barclays Hersham Road 18 HSBC 19 Halifax 31 26 Schools & Nurseries 20 Ashley Church of England Primary School Ashley Road Rydens Road 21 Bell Farm Primary School 22 Cardinal Newman ASHLEY Catholic Primary School PARK 05 A3050 Danesfield Manor School HERSHAM 23 24 Three Rivers Academy A244 STATION 09 25 25 Toad Hall Nursery Oatlands Chase 22 26 Westward School 14 B365 RYDENS Station Avenue Parks & Recreation Felcott Road 27 27 Coronation Molesey Road Recreation Ground 24 28 Elm Grove Recreational Ground Station Avenue 21 Hersham WALTON-ON-THAMES 04 29 STATION Recreation Ground 08 30 Hersham OATLANDS Sports & Social Club PARK 30 31 Walton Tennis Club Queens Road 29 16 A244 Map not to scale and shows Queens Road A244 Queensway approximate locations only. REACH 03 PORTSMOUTH ROAD The Thames Landscape Strategy Review 1 9 7 Landscape Character Reach No 3 PORTSMOUTH ROAD 4.03.1 Overview 1994-2012 • Construction of new cycle/footpath along Barge Walk and the opening of views across the river • Habitat enhancement in the Home Park including restoration of acid grassland • Long-running planning process for the Seething Wells fi lter beds • TLS initiative to restore the historic Home Park water meadows. • RBKuT Kingston Town Centre Area Action Plan K+20 • RBK and TLS Integrated Moorings Business Plan • Management of riverside vegetation along the Barge Walk • Restoration of the Long Water Avenue in 2006 LANDSCAPE CHARACTER 4.03.2 The Portsmouth Road Reach runs north from Seething Wells up to Kingston. The reach has a character of wide open grassland, interrupted only by trees, park and water-works walls and the Portsmouth Road blocks of fl ats. Hampton Court Park extends over the entire Middlesex side right up to Hampton Wick, while the Surrey bank divides between the former Water Works and the Queen’s Promenade. The Portsmouth Road follows the river the length of the reach on the Surrey side. This is one of the only sections of the upstream London Thames where a road has been built alongside the river. The busy road and associated linear developments make a harsh contrast with the rhythm of parkland and historic town waterfronts which characterise the rest of the river. Portsmouth Road 4.03.3 Hampton Court Park is held in the circling sweep of the Thames, as its fl ow curves from south to north.
