Parish News 5 July 2013 Aunt Em and her Salad Days

Max often says he likes my salads more than anything. I once heard him say to neighbours, “If you can’t smell burning it is probably salad.” How we laughed. Now the weather is getting better – at last! It is time for salads. The glory of salads is you don’t need any recipe just put in what is available. Mind you that goes for most of my cooking.

My tip is to get fresh and British ingredients if you can. A good tasty lettuce is the key not those bland things you get sometimes. Add something for taste such as rocket or cress or chives. You can grow these yourself easily. Add cucumber and radishes if you like them and tomatoes. Some people seem to like adding fruit like apple or pineapple. Leave fruit to the dessert stage.

I am not really a dressings person. Mayonnaise is acceptable if you could not make a quick dressing out of oil. Salad Cream went out with the Ark – though Max still asks for it.

If you are feeling exotic, and who isn’t these days, try rice salad which is basically cooked cold rice and sweet corn or peppers thrown in or potato salad which is cooked cold new potatoes with onion or chives again thrown in. EM ****************************************************

Following one of the worst periods of early weather as far as gardeners have been concerned, one possible plus has been the growth of many perennial plants, trees and shrubs.

Early flowering hardy herbaceous plants will need cutting back and dead heading where there are still flowers. Remove the dead flowers from peonies, all that needs doing is just to pull the dead flowers off.

Pick soft fruit, Summer prune fruit trees grown in restricted form. This is essential for controlling trained trees, also admits air and light to the fruits. It consists of cutting back laterals (side shoots) to about half their length and if there is too large a crop remove more fruits. The early indications seem to point to there being a heavy crop but a bit late.

I do think it is worth growing a couple of both red and black currant bushes; they don’t take up much space but do provide a useful crop. The way they fruit is very different, red currants produce on old wood and black on new wood, with black currants, when picking the fruit one can cut out about half the fruiting shoots each year, which should leave the bush in a good shape to fruit next year. If left to their own devices black currants get very overgrown with old wood, There is one problem which I saw recently, a pest called “Big Bud”, this infests the new buds every year, they grow large and fat and don’t produce new growth. The only cure to dig up the bush and burn it. If this is not done other black currant bushes will get infected. Red currants fruit on old wood, so it is only necessary to trim back the new shoots each year. Raspberries will need picking as they ripen. Once the fruit has been picked, cut off the old canes close to the ground to leave room for the new shoots, and also thin out any week new shoots.

Make sure that beans are picked regularly, if allowed to grow old the plant plants will stop producing. There is still time to plant Summer lettuce and Leeks although it may be a little late for leeks to grow very large. PS

Parish News 10 July 2013 Monumental Changes at Dinton Church

In early July, contractors are due to start work which will result in the Serjeant monument being moved from its existing position in the base of the tower, to a new site which is currently occupied by the vestry. In addition to moving the monument, it will also be cleaned and conserved. The existing vestry screen will be removed. Two smaller monuments in the base of the tower will also be moved. This work is Phase 2 of the Flush Fund project – Phase 1 (renewing the tower roof) was completed in 2011. The final part of the project (Phase 3) – the construction of 2 toilets, a kitchenette and a meeting room, will also include a new vestry screen to replace that now being removed. The timing for Phase 3 is as yet uncertain, due to fundraising constraints. There will be some changes to services; please note the details in Parish News. Once the work to the monuments is complete, we hope to hold an “open day” in order to display the resited monument and explain our plans for Phase 3. Please watch out for details in Parish News.

Parish News 13 July 2013 Thanksgiving and Prayer

Ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Over the next few months we are looking on a letter Saint Paul wrote to the Christians at a place called Ephesus in modern day Turkey. This is a section from his first chapter. Read it and think how important prayer is and the inheritance we have.

Can you spare some time to keep Dinton Churchyard Tidy? The next working party will be on July 13, then August 10, September 14 October 12.

The work involved consists of light gardening tasks, mowing, weeding, strimming and general tidying up; you do as much as you want to. As an added incentive, refreshments are provided.

If you would like to help, but Saturday morning is inconvenient, please contact Andrew or Helen and we can let you know what areas need to be worked on. Certain parts of the Churchyard are left as wildlife habitats and need a different work regime.

Please could we ask that those tending graves only put compostable plant material in the compost bins and take plastic, cellophane, wire, plant pots etc. home with you. The churchyard is maintained by volunteers and we have no way of getting rid of plastic etc.

Parish News 14 July 2013 The Vicarage, 10 Badgers Rise, Stone HP17 8RR. Tel: 01296 748068 E mail: [email protected] Dear Friends, It has recently been disclosed that millions of pounds worth of cigarettes are being regularly smuggled into this country, tax-free and sold cheaply on the black market. If we go back to the 16th century, what was it that concerned the government on the smuggling front? Was it beer, wine or precious stones? None of them, but what did concern them in 1526 was thousands of copies of the New Testament, which for the first time had been translated and printed in English. They were being smuggled in amongst the barrels of wine and bales of wool! The gifted translator William Tyndale was the guilty party, and he had already fled from to the Continent to avoid capture and imprisonment.

Why should the Government, and the Catholic Church who were closely aligned with it, be so afraid of a Bible in English? They were afraid of losing their control over society. The Bible included no mention of Popes and penances; instead it spoke of the way to forgiveness and salvation as being through Jesus Christ alone. If this revelation got out to the ordinary people, it would be like dynamite, and the power base of the Catholic Church, which also controlled the Government, would be lost.

Christians in the 1st century realised just how powerful the Gospel was. The Lord’s Prayer, which we recite so blandly today, was considered to be dangerous and politically subversive, and it was so greatly reverenced that candidates for Baptism were not allowed to know its contents until well into their 2nd year of initiation. Even then, they were not allowed to write it down. It had to be written on their hearts. (See Robert Warren “An Affair of the Heart”.)

‘Allegiance to the empire was determined by proclaiming the kingship of emperors, the holiness of their name and submission to their will. To declare otherwise, as demanded by praying ‘Our Father’ and ‘Thy Kingdom come’ was to act subversively towards the powers and principalities.’ (Michael Crosby “Thy Will be done.”)

William Tyndale realised how powerful the true Gospel was, as contained in the Bible, and still is! In the end he was betrayed and arrested, on the Pope’s orders, and executed in Antwerp. However, his ambition to have an English Bible in every Parish, was agreed by Henry 8th in 1538, just 2 years after Tyndale’s death.

Although he never put his name to it, 84% of the New Testament in the King James 1611 Authorised Version of the Bible is the work of William Tyndale, and many people down the centuries since, including William Shakespeare, have been influenced by it as shown in their own writings. Most of us probably have at least ONE Bible in English in our homes, but I wonder how much we value it, read it, or are familiar with its contents? It remains ‘THE LIVING WORD OF GOD’ with power to change each of our lives.

IMPORTANT CRIME INFORMATION AND ADVICE FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICE TEAM AND COMMUNITY SAFETY PROJECTS OFFICER. Dear Resident,

The Community Safety Partnership monitors crime levels to identify any emerging trends across the Vale which with targeted advice may reduce. In the first two weeks of May 2013 we have had 18 reported break-ins to sheds and garages in Haddenham, Stone, Bishopstone and . These have been predominantly on Thursdays and Saturdays where padlocks on sheds have been cut/garage doors forced open and electrical tools stolen.

We would ask that you are extra vigilant and take simple steps to ensure that your shed or garage is secure and tools inside are security marked. Please take a minute to read the following crime reduction tips:

 Have side gates fitted to prevent access to your garden and make sure the gate(s) are secure using a good quality lock/padlock. Keep all of your fencing secure – particularly if your garden backs on to an open space.  Use hasp and staple padlocks to secure shed doors and windows and replace ordinary screws on outbuilding doors with non-return screws or coach bolts (the latter have smooth heads that cannot be undone with a screwdriver or spanner).  Secure up-and-over garage doors with padlocks through the inside runners.  Consider fitting a padlock alarm, which are available in hardware shops.  Thorny shrubs growing under windows or against access routes such as drainpipes, walls and fences create an effective natural barrier. Berberis, blackthorn, rubus and pyracantha are all good for this and are readily available from your garden centre.  Fix a grill to steel plates inside garage and shed windows.  Keep your buildings in good condition. Burglars looking for an easy way in will target split, rotten or warped doors and window frames.  Mark all your property with your postcode and house number or name. Make a note of serial numbers. This will help prove ownership if your property is stolen and then recovered.  Please be vigilant in your neighbourhood and report any suspicious activity straight away to your local neighbourhood team on 101 or if you believe a crime is in progress call 999. If you would like to pass on information but wish to remain anonymous then call Crimestoppers on 0800 500 111.

Parish News 21 July 2013 Parish Clerks Christine Jensen of has been the clerk to Stone, Bishopstone and Hartwell Parish Council for eleven years. During that time she has coped with the growing burden placed on the bottom level of local government and has confidently steered the council through the growing bureaucracy that Central Government has created. She has been patient with councillors and calm during the occasional contentious problems that have arisen. Now she is giving up the clerkship in order to concentrate upon the training of clerks in other parishes and we bid her farewell with considerable regret. Allison Stone of has been selected from a very strong field of applicants to fill the vacancy. She already knows this parish because she had four years as Christine’s assistant. She is a dynamic and very efficient person whom the council is delighted to have appointed. She already has plans to be present in the new Jubilee Pavilion one morning each week so that face to face contact is possible. The council hopes that Allison’s tenure will be long and happy.
