The Columbia Board of Aldermen voted recently to dismiss city police officer Guy Serrin because of a failure to follow departmental rules, Mayor Reed Houston said last week. Students at the Columbia Elementary School got a chance to make their own decora- Candies and frosting were used to decorate the gingerbread houses at the annual tive gingerbread houses for the holiday season. Sweet Streets. CES Sweet Streets Submitted photos

Candy canes, Mike & Ike, M&Ms, Twizzlers --- the candy choices for making a gingerbread house at Columbia Elementary School were plentiful and very tasty as students enjoyed the Sweet Streets event. For every piece of candy or icing put on the gingerbread house, that much or more was also either put on the faces of fourth- and fifth-graders or in their bellies. CES students have enjoyed making gingerbread houses as the holiday event for the past four years. “This has developed as a tradition,” said CES Principal Wendy Bracey. “This event takes places the first week in December immediately following the fifth-grade Christmas Musical. The students and parents are always so excited to make the gingerbread houses. “It is a great time for parents, grandparents, and students to slow down, take time to talk, and just enjoy each other's com- pany,” Bracey said. “They use cameras and cell phones to take pictures of their finished masterpieces before displaying them on the tables in the foyer. The gingerbread houses are dis- played for all students to enjoy the remaining three weeks before Christmas break. It is probably my favorite event of the year because I just love the way it adds to the Spirit of Christmas at CES. Children gather around the tables each morning admiring the beauty of their tedious art work and talking about what they hope to find under the tree on Christmas morning.” Bracey explained the idea for Sweet Streets came from for- mer PTA members Allison Foxworth and Tammy Johnson. Allison and Tammy had a teacher friend who had completed the project in her classroom. They expressed an interest in helping their children’s teachers complete the project in their classrooms. Bracey stated as the conversation went on between the three of them the whole idea of Sweet Streets for the entire school developed in a matter of minutes. Allison and Tammy along with 25 additional volunteers developed an event that would become an annual tradition at CES. . Bracey stated that many thanks go to the new PTA president, Kristi Johnson, who worked diligently along with Carol Davis, Debbie Ramshur and many volunteers to carry on the holiday event of the season. Kristi said, “It was very exciting for me to see how the chil- dren enjoyed this evening. All of the planning and work was worth it. It was a great experience for my child and me.” David McCance and Lou Beadreaux have volunteered for the project since it has been in existence. They have always been committed to getting the job done. “I am always amazed to see the creativity of each individual house,” said Beadreaux. Nelda Hudson, a fifth-grade teacher, said, “I am fascinated by the use of imagination of each student. My student, Caleb Dyess, got creative and made a candy solar panel for his house.” Kelli Burns stated, “I really enjoy watching the children use the candy in such creative ways. Some use the M&Ms for win- dows. Other use the Mike & Ike for brick pavers leading to the door made from Twizzlers. Many use the round peppermints as windows. Each little house turns out to be unique and spe- cial for each child.” “I like the candy,” said Brandon, “I hope it was OK to sneak a few pieces.” Fifth-grade student Adora Hartwell smiled and said, “I think my Grandmaw really enjoyed this.” Harley Olafson asked, “Are we going to have first-, second- and third-place winners?” Bracey laughed and said, “It is just a heart-warming event, but I have one tough task with this project. I have to try to convince our students not to eat their houses because they have been displayed for three weeks. In a three-week period of time, you can't even begin to imagine how many students ask me if they can eat their houses. I just love it!” „ THURSDAY December 29, 2011 www.columbianprogress.com 7 First deer for Pittman Second deer for Bass
