MAJOR EXPECTATIONS MLS Bullish About Global Growth Despite Still Lagging Well Behind North America’S Biggest Leagues CHINA DAILY | HONG KONG EDITION Wednesday, March 4, 2020 | 19 SPORTS SOCCER MAJOR EXPECTATIONS MLS bullish about global growth despite still lagging well behind North America’s biggest leagues s Major League Soccer launched a milestone 25th season over the weekend, the mood wasA not one of reflection and cau tious optimism but bold, even outrageous, predictions of a future empire. Not content to eventually become one of the most success ful leagues in North America, MLS has set its sights on sup planting England’s Premier League and Spain’s La Liga as the world’s top soccer product by the time it celebrates its 50th anni versary. A splashy 25th season kickoff event on Wednesday at a posh Manhattan hotel overlooking Central Park was not meant as a celebration of the past but of the riches that lay ahead, so there was no need to dwell on a troubling bottom line which is written in red ink. While all indicators are trend ing upwards, MLS remains a largely unprofitable venture. Only a handful of the 24 teams made money last year and even commissioner Don Garber con cedes the league will remain a money pit until a new media rights deal is negotiated some time before the current one expires at the end of 2022. “I don’t think any owner wants to run a business that is not mak ing money,” Garber told Reuters. “Clearly we are expecting that our media contracts will increase. Dear TSA Families, As we move from the first part of the season to the second, questions often arise regarding transfers. AYSA, PCJSL and TSA all fully support the movement of players from one Club to another. Every player should find the best fit for themselves. That said, there is a simple rule which must be followed should a player wish to explore transferring. “Sally’s best friend at school plays for the Old Pueblo Soccer Club but she really likes her High School Coach who also coaches Sally at TSA. Her mom asked me how to look into transferring from OP to TSA. What should I tell her?” Here is the rule pure and simple: Between April 1 and July 1 all players are free to talk to all Clubs and tryout w ith any Club they wish and need no permission to do this.
