  • Reaching Playoffs a Priority in Team's Second Season
Reaching playoffs a priority in team's second season http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008/may/01/no-headline---sc1... Reaching playoffs a priority in team's second season By Joe Curley Thursday, May 1, 2008 Having set the foundation, the Ventura County Fusion looks onward and upward as it opens its second campaign Friday night. Last year's inaugural season ended one goal short of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League's postseason. The Fusion watched as its Southwest Division rivals, the Fresno Fuego, reached the national Final Four in Texas. Six original Fusion players were snapped up by Major League Soccer in the offseason, including Thousand Oaks native Chance Myers, who the Kansas City Wizards drafted first overall in the MLS Superdraft. Yet the players, coaches and front office staff seem united in a bullish outlook for the team's follow-up season. "Last year, I didn't have too many expectations for the team, despite the roster we had," said goalkeeper Logan Frank. "I didn't know how the PDL system worked and none of us had played together. "This year, I think we've set the bar higher as a team." That means playoffs or bust. "We have to make playoffs," said Frank. "Playoffs is a big thing for us, this year." "Obviously, from a team perspective, we want to be in the playoffs this year," agreed general manager Ranbir Shergill. That may seem difficult, considering who won't be back this summer. The Fusion finished 9-4-3 last season, earning 30 points from 16 matches.

  • MAJOR EXPECTATIONS MLS Bullish About Global Growth Despite Still Lagging Well Behind North America’S Biggest Leagues
CHINA DAILY | HONG KONG EDITION Wednesday, March 4, 2020 | 19 SPORTS SOCCER MAJOR EXPECTATIONS MLS bullish about global growth despite still lagging well behind North America’s biggest leagues s Major League Soccer launched a milestone 25th season over the weekend, the mood wasA not one of reflection and cau tious optimism but bold, even outrageous, predictions of a future empire. Not content to eventually become one of the most success ful leagues in North America, MLS has set its sights on sup planting England’s Premier League and Spain’s La Liga as the world’s top soccer product by the time it celebrates its 50th anni versary. A splashy 25th season kickoff event on Wednesday at a posh Manhattan hotel overlooking Central Park was not meant as a celebration of the past but of the riches that lay ahead, so there was no need to dwell on a troubling bottom line which is written in red ink. While all indicators are trend ing upwards, MLS remains a largely unprofitable venture. Only a handful of the 24 teams made money last year and even commissioner Don Garber con cedes the league will remain a money pit until a new media rights deal is negotiated some time before the current one expires at the end of 2022. “I don’t think any owner wants to run a business that is not mak ing money,” Garber told Reuters. “Clearly we are expecting that our media contracts will increase. • Leicester City Beat Chelsea to Claim 'Historic' First FA
Established 1961 15 Sports Monday, May 17, 2021 Leicester City beat Chelsea to claim ‘historic’ first FA Cup LONDON: Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the “historical achievement” of his side in beating Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday to lift the FA Cup for the first time in the club’s 137-year history. Youri Tielemans’s sensational winner was witnessed by 22,000 fans at Wembley. The largest crowd for a sports event in England since the coronavirus pan- demic hit 14 months ago were treated to a goal wor- thy to win any trophy as the Belgian midfielder blast- ed into the top corner on 63 minutes. Five years after the Foxes stunned the Premier League’s giants to become champions, Leicester have now claimed English football’s other prestigious trophy at the fifth time of asking. Four times they had previously lost the final, but the last of those was 52 years ago. “It’s a historical day for the football club,” said Rodgers. “Winning the FA Cup for the first time. I’m so happy for the players and supporters. They’ve lost four finals and now a fifth time we’ve managed to do it for them.” A historic week for Rodgers’s men could get even better as they are on the verge of sealing a place in next season’s Champions League. The sides meet again in three days’ time at Stamford Bridge in a pivotal clash to decide who secures a top-four finish in the Premier League. And Rodgers suggested his side were the neu- trals favorites as they aim to upset the applecart of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ once more.
