Writing the acknowledgments for my dissertation in many ways seems a futile exercise due to the fact that I have been so fortunate throughout my life to be surrounded by excellent teachers, classmates, friends and a loving, supporting family who have all been instrumental in this process. I will undoubtedly give short shrift to many, so my apologies in advance. First and foremost, I would like to thank my advisor, Jerry Davis. Jerry has been, and continues to be the consummate mentor. Never short on time or advice, always equipped with the perfect answer to questions I could not always fully articulate and constant in his belief that my work was worthwhile and important (despite my near constant doubts to the contrary) – I cannot imagine what my last five years would have been like without Jerry. His wisdom and good humor is in abundance and he was so generous in sharing both with me in the exact dosage when I needed them most. I will never cease to be grateful that I wound up at Michigan and had the pleasure of having Jerry as my advisor. He is and will always be, "the man." My other committee members – Maggie Levenstein, Mark Mizruchi and Kathie Sutcliffe – also have been extremely influential. Maggie gave particularly useful iii comments and guidance early in the conceptualization of this project. She helped connect me with researchers with overlapping interests and with data necessary to push my work into new and undoubtedly fruitful directions. Her knowledge of labor history and feedback on Chapter 3 of my dissertation has been invaluable. Outside of Jerry, Mark has read more drafts of what became Chapter 4 of my dissertation. In fact, it was in his Economic Sociology seminar my second year in the program that I first began work on that paper. The fact that he provided excellent feedback on each and every version of that paper I wrote is a testament to his patience! Being a member of his Economic Sociology workshop and the feedback I received from its participants were also extremely helpful. Kathie's blend of kindness and constructive feedback, both as an instructor and as a dissertation reader, proved instrumental in helping me develop my skills at theory building. Other members of the Michigan faculty have also contributed to my academic development. In particular, I thank Sue Ashford, Jane Dutton and Jim Walsh with tolerating me as a student during my first two years in the PhD program. Having no research background, combined with an eager desire to prove that I belonged at a place like Michigan made me a difficult student to be sure. Each was incredibly supportive of my work and gave excellent feedback in the many presentations I made before the department. At various times each paid me compliments on my progress as a scholar, which meant more to me than they likely realize. I also owe a debt of thanks to both Maxim Sytch and Dave Mayer for generously providing me advice on my research as well as serving as wonderful templates for how to be an involved junior faculty member. I would be remiss to exclude Alison Davis-Blake and Rueben McDaniel from iv acknowledgement. Both were members of the faculty at University of Texas during my time there as an MBA student and each displayed considerable support for me as I chose to pursue a career in academia. Without them I would have never found myself at Michigan and I am forever thankful that they indulged me in my pursuits! Emily was amazing to me and the other members of my cohort our first year in school and served as an excellent example for the role senior students should play in a doctoral program. Olenka was always generous with her time in helping me develop my Stata skills and always had positive words of encouragement for me. Georges was always quick with a joke and even quicker with an insightful comment or question and I greatly enjoyed our casual conversations over the years. I owe you all a great debt of gratitude for the patience, kindness and laughter you each shared with me. Moreover, on those rare occasions when we were not fastidiously working on our research, they provided me with many smiles as well! I must, however, single out Flannery, who was my dearest friend and "partner in crime" during my tenure at Michigan. I am absolutely positive that I could v not have made it without her. She listened to me vent my frustrations, shared in my successes, provided excellent counsel and advice and was always ready to help me blow off some steam when I needed it. Moreover, she was the one I measured myself against. I never felt like we were in a competition but I always knew I had to be the best, hardest- working version of myself to keep pace with her. Some of my fondest memories of graduate school were the two of us watching, in our respective cities, Longhorns, Mavericks and Rangers games on TV and talking on the phone about vi all the happenings. It was hard to be so far away from home, but he helped me stay connected with our near weekly phone calls and I will forever be grateful for that unwavering friendship. I could not have done any of this without the love and support of the people who have known me the longest. My sister, Anissa, has been wonderful. Sending me cards, notes and pictures of her three children made the long distance seem much more tolerable. I cannot thank my father, Larry, enough. His hard work, diligence and willingness to sacrifice for his family cannot be elaborated upon enough to do him justice. I will forever be grateful for everything he taught me about the importance of showing respect to others and striving for excellence in all that I do. My mother, Barbara, is the most graceful and loving person I know. She exemplifies kindness and humility and has a deft awareness of when I need a kind word of encouragement.     1 The Struggles of Iregularly-Employed Workers in South Korea, 1999-20121 Jennifer Jihye Chun Department of Sociology University of Toronto [email protected] November 25, 2013 In December 1999, two years after the South Korean government accepted a $58.4 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), President Kim Dae-Jung announced that the nation’s currency crisis was officially over. The South Korean government’s aggressive measures to stabilize financial markets, which included drastic efforts to reduce labor costs, dismantle employment security, and legalize indirect forms of dispatch or temporary employment, contributed to the fastest recovery of a single country after the 1997 Asian Debt Crisis, restoring annual GDP growth rates to pre-crisis levels.2 While the business community praised such efforts for helping debt-ridden banks and companies survive the crisis, labor unions and other proponents of social and economic justice virulently condemned the government’s neoliberal policy agenda for subjecting workers to deepening inequality and injustice. Despite differing opinions on the impact of government austerity measures, both sides agree that the “post-IMF” era is synonymous with a new world of work. Employment precarity – that is, the vulnerability of workers to an array of cost-cutting employer practices that depress wage standards, working conditions and job and income security – is a defining feature of the 21st century South Korean economy. The majority of jobs in the labor market consist of informal and precarious jobs that provide minimal, if any, legal protection against unjust and discriminatory employment practices. Informally- and precariously- employed workers also face numerous barriers to challenging deteriorating working conditions and heightened employer abuses through the conventional repertoire of unionism: strikes, collective bargaining and union agreements.

The Employment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2017 was published on 7th December. The Bill proposes to make it mandatory that workers are provided with their core terms of employment within five days of beginning a job. The legislation will also ban zero hours contracts “in most circumstances”, with exceptions including to allow employers to provide cover in emergency situations or to cover short-term absences. Jones The very decade which has witnessed the decline of legal Jim Crow has also seen the rise of de facto segregation in our most fundamental socioeconomic institutions,” vet- eran civil rights activist Bayard Rustin wrote in 1965, pointing out that black work- ers were more likely to be unemployed, earn low wages, work in “jobs vulnerable to automation,” and live in impoverished ghettos than when the U.S. Supreme Court banned legal segregation in 1954. Historians have attributed that divergence to a nar- rowing of African American political objectives during the 1950s and early 1960s, away from demands for employment and economic reform that had dominated the agendas of civil rights organizations in the 1940s and later regained urgency in the late 1960s. Jacquelyn Dowd Hall and other scholars emphasize the negative effects of the Cold War, arguing that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and other civil rights organizations responded to domestic anticom- munism by distancing themselves from organized labor and the Left and by focusing on racial rather than economic forms of inequality. This note does not attempt to account for the role of institutions like the World Bank and the OECD in pushing for even more precarious work relations, rewarding and rating countries for their efforts to abolish direct employment. Agriculture, which still has the world's largest work force, is almost entirely built on precarious labour, and there is a vital connection between this and the fact that agricultural workers who help to feed the world are often among the most food insecure. The relationship between poverty and deepening inequality, and the growth of precarious work in rich and poor countries alike, has been well documented. The purpose here is to highlight a phenomenon which has not received the attention it requires, i.e. the increasingly widespread use of indirect, precarious employment relations to weaken trade union organization and bargaining power. It is in this context that precarious work emerges as a fundamental human rights issue demanding a strong response rooted in a comprehensive human rights framework. The ILO defines the standard employment relationship in these terms: The traditional pattern of the employment relationship, or standard employment relationship, has for many years been that of full time work, under a contract of employment for unlimited duration, with a single employer, and protected against unjustified dismissal.

    Nearly a quarter-million people descended on the nation’s capital for the 1963 March on Washington. As the signs on the opposite page remind us, the march was not only for civil rights but also for jobs and freedom. Bottom left: Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech during the historic event, stands with marchers. Bottom right: A. Philip Randolph, the architect of the march, links arms with Walter Reuther, president of the United Auto Workers and the most prominent white labor leader to endorse the march. Teaching the March on Washington O n August 28, 1963, the March on Washington captivated the nation’s attention. Nearly a quarter-million people—African Americans and whites, Christians and Jews, along with those of other races and creeds— gathered in the nation’s capital. They came from across the country to demand equal rights and civil rights, social justice and economic justice, and an end to exploitation and discrimination. After all, the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” was the march’s official name, though with the passage of time, “for Jobs and Freedom” has tended to fade. ; The march was the brainchild of longtime labor leader A. PhilipR andolph, and was organized by Bayard RINGER Rustin, a charismatic civil rights activist. Together, they orchestrated the largest nonviolent, mass protest T in American history. In a culture of overwork and increased demands for productivity, teaching, research, and administration cannot fit into contracted hours so are done at nights and weekends. This article highlights the gendered impacts of current working conditions, focusing specifically on the conditions of precariously employed researchers and educators in the UK higher education system. Emphasising the unpaid work done by feminists in academia and beyond, this article suggests looking toward a post-work imaginary as one strategy to make possible more inclusive and accessible educational futures. Sharing feminist trade unionist strategies through which to question some of the unrealistic demands put upon university staff, the article emphasises the need for a feminist ethics of care to build sustainable movements and futures.     Tom Kahn and the Fight for Democracy: A Political Portrait and Personal Recollection Rachelle Horowitz Editor’s Note: The names of Tom Kahn and Rachelle Horowitz should be better known than they are. Civil rights leader John Lewis certainly knew them. Recalling how the 1963 March on Washington was organised he said, ‘I remember this young lady, Rachelle Horowitz, who worked under Bayard [Rustin], and Rachelle, you could call her at three o'clock in the morning, and say, "Rachelle, how many buses are coming from New York? How many trains coming out of the south? How many buses coming from Philadelphia? How many planes coming from California?" and she could tell you because Rachelle Horowitz and Bayard Rustin worked so closely together. They put that thing together.’ There were compensations, though. Activist Joyce Ladner, who shared Rachelle Horowitz's one bedroom apartment that summer, recalled, ‘There were nights when I came in from the office exhausted and ready to sleep on the sofa, only to find that I had to wait until Bobby Dylan finished playing his guitar and trying out new songs he was working on before I could claim my bed.’ Tom Kahn also played a major role in organising the March on Washington, not least in writing (and rewriting) some of the speeches delivered that day, including A. Philip Randolph’s. When he died in 1992 Kahn was praised by the Social Democrats USA as ‘an incandescent writer, organizational Houdini, and guiding spirit of America's Social Democratic community for over 30 years.’ This account of his life was written by his comrade and friend in 2005.

    Martin Luther King Jr. and the Legacy of Organized Labor Rev Gary Kowalski, UCOT September 1, 2019 sermon Bernie Sanders doesn’t know the half of it. Vermont’s fuzzy-headed Senator is fond of reminding audiences that Martin Luther King Jr. was in Memphis, Tennessee, the day he died, not to fight Jim Crow, but to support a strike by the city’s sanitation workers. The garbage men there–almost all of them black–had recently formed a chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees to demand better wages and working conditions. Two garbagemen had just been crushed to death when the big compactor on the trash truck malfunctioned. But the city refused to recognize their union, and when the 1,300 employees walked off their jobs, marching under picket signs reading “I Am A Man,” the police broke up the rally with mace and billy clubs. Tanks lined the streets. Go back and look at the images. It was like Tianamen Square, but in Tennessee. After the mayor threatened to fire every one of the striking workers and a local court issued an injunction against any further demonstrations, the union’s leaders called on Dr. King to visit Memphis. It was an invitation he couldn’t refuse.
