hen theThe unusual meetstallest the apotheosis Gothic of French thinking, in the world! during what would later become known as the Gothic Wperiod, your thoughts inevitably turn to St. Peter’s Ca- thedral in Beauvais. This monument to stone and glass rises majestically in the heart of the episcopal district and will stir the emotions of anyone encountering it for the first time. So let’s meet this grand old lady... The prodigious dimensions of St. Peter’s Cathedral bear witness to the power of the Count Bishop of Beauvais. Following a fire that struck the primitive cathedral of Our Lady of Basse-Œuvre, the bishop decided in 1225 to rebuild his and make it the most massive cathedral in the kingdom. Construction began with the choir section, which was completed in 47 years, although part of its vaulted ceiling collapsed twelve years after construction was finished. One break for restoration and the Hundred Years War later, work resumed in 1500, with the construction of the , featuring a gorgeous Gothic façade and a rose 11 metres in diameter - one of the largest in all mediaeval architecture. The next section to be built was a lantern tower at the intersection with the transept, half as high as the Eiffel Tower itself and taller than any other cathedral. The , completed in 1569, collapsed four years later and took part of the transept and the choir with it, leaving the cathedral unfinished. he Beauvais region plays home to a great many artists and has been a capital of ceramics for millennia. As you stroll through Tthe streets of Beauvais, the numerous original works of art that decorate the façades offer a visually arresting show. The city's most famous talents include the Gréber dynasty, and numer- ous examples of their gold- and silversmithing survive: their work can be found in the “Belle Epoque” façades in Beauvais, the surrounding region and the Picardy coast. The most striking example is undoubtedly the former factory at 63, rue Calais, Beauvais, which has a façade richly decorated with glazed stoneware in dazzling colours - a real open-air advertisement! Avenue Victor Hugo, boulevard Saint-André, the Gréber family home on rue Bossuet, the former butcher's on rue Léon Zeude or the façade of the central post office are further examples of how the art of the Gréber dynasty is omnipresent in Beauvais. In the Beauvais region, the Bou- lenger factory in has an equally original variation of ceramic art: decorative tiles studded with designs of mediaeval inspiration were used during the 19th Century for the renovation of historic monuments. This timeless structure spanning three hectares has a mysterious history linked to the history of the leper colony. The St. Lazarus Infirmary is a remarkable site dating from the 12th and 13th Centuries, and is typical of a hospital of the Middle Ages. The monks’ quarters, the Roman chapel, the barn and its original oak beams form a unique ensemble that represents one of the most well-preserved leper houses in Europe. The Infirmary is protected as a Historic Monument. Behind its high walls, it is a singularly beautiful architectural location and is accessible to everyone, as it is labelled a disabled-friendly tourist site. The city of Beauvais became the owner of the whole site in 2002 and ran a vast restoration campaign between 2007 and 2009 on some of the buildings: the farmer’s house, the barn, the sheep pen and the surrounding wall. This unique site now has a new lease of life and really shines in front of visitors: from season to season, the Infirmary hosts concerts, shows, festive days and contemporary premières, and also regularly hosts artists and is used as a recording studio. Proud of their passion!

AU CŒUR DE BEAUVAIS

If you are looking for a bed and breakfast in Beauvais, stop off and stay with a woman with heart. Marie-Noëlle Blain is a character full of surprises! Those who know her well will tell you she is a go-getter who loves a challenge. Since her career began, she has experienced a great many things. Leaving the family advertising firm to move into the hotel business in 1999, she visited the park hotel in Beauvais out of curiosity, fell for its charm and bought it on the spot. She worked doggedly to make it into the City Hotel, which was awarded 3 stars under her stewardship in 2012. When it came for time to retire, she did not even consider slowing down, and plunged headlong into opening a guest house in the centre of the city. In homage to her father, who was behind a series of promotional signs on the theme of “Beauvais, the heart of the city”, she named her new guest house “Au cœur de Beauvais” (“In the heart of Beauvais”). She shaped this guest house in her own image: welcoming, spacious and well-thought-out down to the smallest detail, to make sure everyone “feels at home”. Inspired by her travels, she brought back furniture from Bali for the Jeanne bedroom; as a devoted grandmother, she created a veritable family suite named Séverine; and as an incorrigible romantic, she made the Louise room into a cosy little nest. Even if she lives life in the fast lane, between presiding over a commercial court, the service clubs of which she is a member and her TOP SECRET guests, she takes being a hostess to the limit, even preparing a vegan breakfast at 06:00. As you can see, Marie-Noëlle is someone worth getting to know! If you look out the window from one of the rooms in the “Au cœur de Beauvais” guest house, you will get an unbeatable view of the recently renovated MUDO bell-tower. LE ZINC BLEU

“Gérald Cagné, the most famous moustache in Beauvais” This emblematic figure, who for a long time has dominated Beauvais nightlife, must have the fattest address book of any restaurant owner. All of Beauvais comes to his establishment, the “Zinc Bleu”. Gérald is all about a rock ‘n’ roll atmosphere and a friendly welcome: no standing on ceremony! He comes from a family of Beauvais traders, so welcoming customers is second nature to him. Gérald is a larger-than-life character whose loud laughter and slightly provocative humour never go unnoticed, and above all he is a bon viveur. He is devoted to his city and always prepared to commit to major events like the “Autour du Zinc” blues festival, St. Patrick's Day and the Renault Alpine exhibition - for him, friends come first! It’s hard to find a better view in Beauvais: the conservatories of this large brasserie look out over the gate of the majestic St. Peter’s Cathedral. As its name suggest, the establishment's blue façade is easy to spot, and there is a choice of two ambiances inside: there is a brasserie section near the bar, where regulars come to read their paper, have breakfast, brunch, a coffee and a snack; and a ‘traditional restaurant’ section, at lunchtimes only, with dishes like Picardy-style pancakes, seafood platters and beautifully tender fillets of beef.
