President opened the meeting at 4:10pm.

Minutes from AGM held 27th November 2010 Moved Debra Allport, seconded by Duncan McGregor that Minutes from the 2010 AGM be accepted. Carried.

Matters Arising: No matters arising from the Minutes from the 2010 AGM.

Official Apologies: Cathy Woodward, Denis Woodward, Patrick Woodward, Don Scurfield.

President’s Report: The President, Tim McMahon, read his report for the year. The report was made available for members.

Welcome to the 2011 Annual General Meeting of the NSW Ice Hockey Association Inc.

The Association is in an excellent financial position again this year and 2012 registration fees won’t have to be changed. The decision to assign all State Teams an Association bank account proved a smart one, with balancing, player refunds and accounting all undertaken with a minimum of fuss (and cost).

The website continued to attract in excess of one million hits per month for most of the year, as it has done since its inception and given those sort of statistics, IHNSW should consider soliciting serious advertising sponsorship in 2012. A Face Book page was also launched this year and is seems to have been very well received.

As is always the case, an ice-time shortage continues make scheduling difficult but once again, Emily and Vicki Stephenson managed to produce a successful draw and get us through the season with minimal inconvenience. I’d like to thank them both for their persistence and their patience.

The overall membership has changed very little this year however, there was an increase in younger player numbers and several Clubs have voiced an interest in pursuing some form of Mite competition in 2012, which is very encouraging. The privately owned/operated leagues have had very little impact on IHNSW fielding 22 teams in three senior recreational divisions in the winter and seven teams competing in the summer league.

Once again, there were no cancellations in the Senior B draw and officials were assigned to all games. The Senior B Committee seems to be working very well and I’d like acknowledge Norm Walsh’s continued efforts in assisting the Association to provide these players with as fine a league as possible.

Robyn Ravelje again worked tirelessly allocating officials to regular rounds and an increasing number of Exhibition Games and is definitely owed our gratitude.

Disciplinary tribunals were minimal this year and I’d like to thank Ken Lambert for taking on the Chairman position when it was suddenly vacated early in the season. Ken has a wealth experience in all aspects of the sport and his considerable knowledge has ensured the IHNSW Tribunal remains the fairest and most comprehensive ice hockey disciplinary system in the country.

East Coast Super League continues as an Incorporated Association and affiliated club in its own right and from all accounts, has had a successful season. Les Adams deserves to be singled out and congratulated for his continued efforts with this age-group, including his involvement with both IHNSW Brown Teams.

Financial Statements: A financial statement was provided with the AGM report, which was distributed to all members. Treasurer Keven Ross answered questions on the financial statements. Craig Air, seconded Tony Mizen that the reports be accepted. Carried.

Election of Committee: IHNSW Secretary Warwick Griffith asked that Tim McMahon and Keven Ross to step down.

President position: One nomination only. Steve Ransome nominated by Warwick Griffith and seconded Vicki Stephenson.

Treasurer’s position: One nomination Keven Ross nominated by Tim McMahon and seconded by Warwick Griffith

Election of four Ordinary Members: Nominations received: Vicki Stephenson Norm Walsh Tim Flynn Dawn Watt Kenny Schafer Jnr Ron Lavery – withdrew nomination

The Secretary asked each nominee to say a few words on their history in Ice Hockey.

Ken Lambert – IHNSW Tribunal Chairman will act as scrutiniser for the voting. The Secretary has asked that all present cast their votes in the ballot box at the front of the room.

Ken Lambert announces that Vicki Stephenson, Dawn Watt, Norm Walsh and Tim Flynn have been voted as the Ordinary Members.

Moved Debra Allport, seconded Duncan McGregor, that the vote be accepted. Carried.

The following Officials were appointed on the day after receiving nominations prior to the AGM, or continuing in their current capacity:

- Social Justice Officer Dorothy McDonald - Statistician Don Stolee - Coaching Director Mark Stephenson - Referee Administrator Robyn Ravelje - Dawn Watt Development Officer - Tribunal Officer Ken Lambert - Women’s Coordinator Anthony Hall - Tournament Director TBC - Referee Development TBC

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 25th NOVEMBER, 2012

Dear Members,

Welcome to the 2012 Annual General Meeting of the NSW Ice Hockey Association Inc.

Competition Our junior competition this year was effected by a reduction in player numbers and as a result some clubs were unable to field teams. Whilst all grades have teams with a wide range of skill, it was pleasing to see that all six clubs with junior teams where represented in the final series and teams from 4 different clubs played in closely contested grand finals.

NSW were also strongly represented in National championships with 3 junior teams and our Browns team competing in the grand final games. The Ginsberg team led by Dawn Watt and the Tange team led by Jason Kvisle played some great hockey to bring home the gold medals.

Player numbers Since 2010 NSW has seen a reduction in junior player numbers by approximately 10% per year. The largest decline in numbers is at the Peewee and Bantam ages. The reason for this decline is the subject of much debate but contributing causes are: general state of family finances, closure of the Blacktown rink and lack of entry level development at some rinks. The result has been that some clubs have not been able to field a team in all junior grades in 2012 and this is likely to be the case again in 2013. In the later part of this year several clubs have initiated programs to encourage new players to the sport and there are early indications of success. These initiatives aimed at recruitment of new players are critical to the success of our sport in the long term. Healthy team and club numbers are a good antidote to increasing costs and they also allow more investment in the development of players, coaches and officials. An analysis of our membership demographics shows that more than 80% of our junior players start playing ice hockey when they live within 10 km of a rink that plays games so the effect of rink closures or not being able to play games at some rinks has a material effect on junior player numbers.

Senior player numbers are very healthy.

Development Earlier in the year the IHA Technical director, Debbie Strome held three Power skating clinics in Sydney. These clinics were very well received by the players and coaches who attended and we plan to run an extended program in 2013. IHA has identified a trend of deteriorating skating skills in all states and having Debbie available to assist coaches will be one part of our plan to rectify the situation in 2013.

A number of goalkeeper training sessions took place during the year. These sessions brought together goalkeepers at all skill levels from all clubs and were run by experienced coaches. Positive feedback from players and parents indicates the increased skill and confidence the players achieved greatly improved performance and motivation.

The Only Atoms tournament takes place each year in Newcastle, with around 90 players taking part. All NSW clubs attend each year as well as a small number of interstate teams as numbers allow. For most Atom players and their families this is the highlight of their year, with some great hockey played in a carnival atmosphere. IHNSW will be running this tournament again in 2013.

The NSW Atoms development camp takes place each year over a weekend in February or March. This camp sees about 30 players and a number of coaches take part in a program consisting of several on ice sessions, off-ice training, pool recovery sessions, and talks on strategy and nutrition. This camp is the primary Atoms development activity each year and is designed to provide basic skills and boost motivation before the start of the season. We also encourage club coaches to attend so they contribute to the camp outcomes and to experience some of the practices and systems our representative coaches use.

NSW is pleased to be a part of the newly formed National junior league. We fully support the development and IIHF compliance objectives of the league and look forward to seeing the participating players take the ice next year after a summer of tough competition. There are plans for an expanded competition next year.

Officiating Ensuring the quantity and quality of on ice officials remains an issue for NSW. We have a program for mentoring young officials and we are seeing between 5 and 10 new young officials each year, most of which remain active in subsequent year. Officiating of our senior recreational league remains a scheduling and at times a competency challenge.

Our team There are 3 pillars of any amateur sport; the players, the facilities, and the volunteers to make things happen. I want to recognise the volunteers. They do this despite having jobs and families to look after and we all know it's not an easy job and it's certainly thankless at times. So, thanks to coaches, managers, scorekeepers, club committees, fundraisers, IHNSW delegates, tribunal members, the office holders, senior committee and Board members for your service to the sport. In particular I would like to thank Vicki Stephenson for year after year of gargantuan effort. We will miss her insights, her drive and her frankness. Fortunately she has not been lost to the sport because she was stolen from us by IHA as their treasurer. I would also like to thanks Warwick Griffith for his contribution at so many levels and we will miss his experience and cool head on the board.

There are a few volunteers who's service to our sport is at the highest level for an extraordinary length of time and their contribution to the sport have long lasting effects. I wish to recognise three such individuals with life membership of IHNSW; Tim McMahon, Jeff Scott and Ken Lambert.

REFEREE ADMINISTRATOR REPORT 2012

Firstly a thank you must be written to all the regular officials who make themselves available week after week. The games could not go ahead without your support so, thanks very much.

There were quite a few new officials this season from both junior and senior ranks, I hope you enjoyed your experiences and will be available next season to officiate. We tried hard to have mentors available and an appreciation goes to them for supporting the game. I tried to even out games so everyone had a fair share. It didn’t always work but I hope everyone got some experience from the season.

We were very close on a couple of occasions to cancelling games due to lack of officials but for another season there was not a game cancelled because of lack of officials. There were many games that had to be two manned but all games went ahead.

The total number of games for the season was 625 which were up from last season.

Lastly I would like to thank Joe Mayer for his help, his advice and mentoring of officials throughout the season. Hope to have contact from you all next season. Please encourage other ice hockey players to have a try at officiating. The more officials the easy it is to spread the workload.

Regards and thanks again.

Robyn Ravelje.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICER REPORT 2012

The 2012 season was a weaker year for NSW junior competitions with lower numbers in each grade. It is believed the lack of ice for development is a direct root cause. The competition was continued to be played this year under new “rules”…that is, no individual stats would be shown on the website. This was done to discourage players running up the score in order to achieve “highest points”. As per other years, there was no finals series in Atoms, rather there was an Atoms Round Robin Tournament where all players received a gold medal. Thank you to Liverpool for putting on the tournament for a third year in a row, including providing t-shirts to all participants.

With the demise of the John McCrae-Williamson as a National Tournament, the Only Atoms Tournament became the anticipated event of the season for the Atoms age group. The tournament was in its 6th year in 2012 and was attended by all clubs as well as ACT and QLD. Congratulations go to Canterbury who were victorious in taking home the shield and becoming the first team to have their name on the shield twice.

Another development opportunity for Atoms comes in the form of a weekend long camp held in Newcastle each February. The aim of the camp is to not only provide the players with a chance to improve their skills, but also for coaches around the state to come together to share ideas and learn from Level II and Level III coaches who run the camp. 2012 also saw a Girls Day Hockey school, power skating sessions with Debbie Strome, and goalie clinics held around the state.

A fantastic 3 on 3 tournament was held in Coffs Harbour for atoms and peewees that included teams from NSW, ACT, and QLD. We hope next year is even bigger and that Bantams can be included as some stage.

Special thanks must go to Mark Stephenson for continued efforts in helping the abovementioned initiatives to run smoothly for the benefit of all.

Dawn Watt

SPORTS MEDICINE OFFICER REPORT 2012

2012 was a relatively uneventful year for the sports medical area in IHNSW.

There was a PowerPoint presentation to the IHNSW Committee of Management looking at research into injury risks associated with Peewee aged players playing up into contact grades. As a result Peewee playing up applications will be assessed with a view to minimising injury risk to these young skaters.

SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO WADA PROHIBITED LIST 2012

Asthma medications

One of the most significant changes is the removal of eformoterol from Section 3 ‘Beta-2 Agonists’ of the List when taken by inhalation at therapeutic dosages. This is commonly known as “SYMBICORT” Taking into account recent research results and requests by members of the sports community, inhaled eformoterol at therapeutic doses is no longer prohibited. Therefore a TUE is no longer required. The List prohibits the administration of all beta-2 agonists except salbutamol “VENTOLIN” (maximum 1600 micrograms over 24 hours), salmeterol “SEREVENT/SERETIDE” when taken by inhalation, and now formoterol (maximum 36 micrograms taken over 24 hours).

This means that most inhaled asthma relievers and preventers commonly prescribed in Australia can now be used at normal prescribed doses without any need to lodge a TUE form before competing.

Note the use of the older asthma reliever inhaler, Terbutaline “BRICANYL” is still prohibited and requires a TUE.

Dr. Norm Walsh

SENIOR B DIVISION REPORT 2012

2012 was another extremely successful year for the IHNSW Senior B competition with team numbers rising to an all-time high of 23, indicating continued growth in interest in recreational hockey in Sydney. Issues with insufficiently experienced officials and dangerous play persist. Sanctions on teams and individuals accumulating excessive penalty minutes have changed behaviour to some extent and these special rules will be fine tuned for next season.

Once again there were no cancelled games this season due to lack of officials. Thanks to Robyn Ravelje for her efforts to coordinate our limited officiating resources across such a large number of senior games. Further efforts will be made in 2013 to improve the capability and availability of officials to make senior B self-officiating as far as possible. Senior B welcomes ECSL/SnrA’s commitment to introduce a requirement that their senior teams provide a similar number of referees to the competition in the same way that senior B does now.

The IHNSW Senior Committee introduced a number of positive changes in 2012:

 Scorekeepers now receive payment for senior B games in the same way that other officials do, and this should increase the standard of senior scorekeeping overtime.

 A Referee Subcommittee was set up to develop more effective ways of tackling our refereeing undersupply and training problems.

 Referee workshops were arranged and conducted successfully to improve the standard of officiating.

 There was considerable debate about restarting the Senior A contact hockey league this year and ECSL attended joint meetings with the Senior B Committee on this subject. There was insufficient interest for the league to be viable with senior B players alone. For next season ECSL will be rebadged as Senior A allowing tighter integration of ECSL and Senior B as our senior leagues while maintaining ECSL’s format as a draft and selection based league.

Norman Walsh

WOMENS COORDINATOR REPORT 2012

Introduction

With the winter season now complete, it was another great year of hockey for IHNSW, and in particular a great year for female players. This year’s registrations - 114 registered female players across all grades, an increase in 34 players from 2011. 11 of these were atom aged, so congratulations goes out to all the clubs on your recruitment efforts over the break. To the women playing senior grades, congratulations to you for mixing it up with the boys.

Womens Comp in NSW for 2012

We had 5 womens teams entered in 2012 season. Canterbury Eagles, Newcastle North Stars, Norwest Emperors, Penrith Phantoms and Sydney Bears. Penrith Phantoms finished as minor premiers, earning their spot in the grand final. Canterbury Eagles and Norwest Emperors played a tough low scoring semi- final, with Canterbury 2-1 victors. The grand final, saw Penrith Phantoms victorious with a 5-0 win. The scoreline not reflecting the closeness of the game with shots on 23-14. (And a great effort by the Phantoms goalie stopping all 14 shots on goal.)

Womens Development in 2012

There was no womens specific development camps held in NSW during the winter season 2012. Players continued to train with their respective clubs teams.

AWIHL

Once again the North Star Sirens will represent NSW in the summer AWIHL competition. The Sirens will play the bulk of their home games at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium in Newcastle, and will train at

Canterbury Ice Rink on a Thursday night during the season. Sirens are also actively promoting womens ice hockey and helping with development opportunities for female players.

Girls Day 2012

Liverpool Saints Ice Hockey Club hosted the inaugural Sydney Girls Day for 2102 at Liverpool Catholic Club (LCC) Sports Complex on Sunday 21st October.

The event was promoted with posters in several Sydney ice rinks, articles in the local Liverpool newspapers, on Facebook and Ice Hockey New South Wales (NSW) website, and had support from North Star Sirens Team, a member of the Australian Womens Ice Hockey League (AWIHL).

26 girls attended ranging in age from 5, to ladies in the early 40's. They took the ice at 9:45am for close to 2 hours of games, drills and activities that gave the girls exposure to various hockey skills while creating an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie.

Head coaches Kaylee White and Sandy Cameron, both former Australian National Womens Team representatives, lead a group of coaching staff consisting of North Star Sirens AWIHL players, local junior grade coaches and helpers, in co-ordinating the activities. Lots of smiles all around as the attendees completed the various station drills and fun games.

NSW Winter competition consisted of 5 teams this year, and a total of 90+ players across junior and senior grades. Existing female players were invited to come along and ‘bring a friend’. This proved successful as 14 of these attendees were new to ice hockey. 3 of the ladies have children playing in junior grades, so for these ladies the day was enlightening, and they came away with a new found appreciation of the skills their respective children have. From the feedback we have received after the event, several of the girls are now signing up for hockey development.

Many thanks goes out to the coaching staff for giving up their time to lead the on-ice activities, LCC Saints who supplied ice time and loan equipment, the rink for providing skates to those who needed them, and all the girls who attended and made the morning such a fun event.

18 National Womens Team Selection

IHA conducted an U18 Talent Identification Camp in Adelaide in September with the goal of creating and developing an Australian National Womens U18 team. 2 girls from NSW attended the camp, Ella Berthold and Christiarn Hall, with several other NSW girls identified as possible squad members. There are plans to hold a follow-up training camp in Brisbane, in January 2013, where a squad of 15 players and 2 goalies will be chosen to form the Australian National U18 Womens Team. The team will then be training and looking to qualify to compete in the U18 World Championships as soon as possible.

BLACKTOWN FLYERS ICE HOCKEY CLUB REPORT 2012

Season 2012 saw the beginning of a positive relationship between the Flyers Ice Hockey Club and .

Management of the Penrith Ice Palace warmly welcomed the Flyers into the Penrith community and the club now looks to have a brighter future.

Flyers fielded teams in Atoms, Bantams and Midgets. Unfortunately, due to low numbers we were unable to field a PeeWee team this year; however every effort is being made to field teams in all junior grades in 2013.

On Easter Saturday, Flyers hosted a mini skills development camp for Atoms & PeeWee aged players, and invited a visiting QLD Peewee team to participate. This day was a great success with all players gaining some valuable skills. We would like to thank the management of Penrith Ice Palace for their support of this event. Also, special thanks to Coach Dave Costa for his tireless efforts with organising the day.

With the continued support of ice rink management, Flyers are currently hosting our inaugural Summer Skills Clinic, this clinic is being well supported by players from all clubs and we are looking to make this an annual clinic. Again, special thanks to Coach Dave Costa for organising the clinic and all the coaches who have volunteered their time over the summer months.

Congratulations to players who represented Flyers in IHNSW Ginsberg, Kurt De Fris and Tange representative teams. Ginsberg players brought home a Gold Medal, De Fris players bringing home a Silver Medal and Tange players bringing home a long awaited Gold Medal. All players represented their club and state with maturity and professionalism beyond their years.

Past and present Flyers players will also represent on an international level with players being selected in the IHA National Youth Team, the IHA National Junior team, and the IHA National Senior Men’s Team. We wish those players all the very best on their journey to the World Championships in 2013. Even though our membership numbers have decreased, Flyers remain in a strong financial position. Our club would not exist without the dedication of our Coaches, Managers and very dedicated volunteers, a very special thank you to all those who give up their precious time to support the Flyers family.

It is with a tinge of sadness that I write this report, as this will be my final year as President of this great club. I would personally like to thank all who have supported me over the years. I have made some wonderful friends through my association with this fantastic sport and I look forward to continuing those friendships.

Sharon Kelly President Blacktown Flyers Ice Hockey Club

CANTERBURY EAGLES ICE HOCKEY CLUB AGM REPORT 2012

The Canterbury Eagles Ice Hockey Club has enjoyed another successful year and remains one of the largest clubs in the country. Strong demand for membership in both the junior and senior ranks has continued which is a credit to the coaches and other volunteers that give so much time and energy into developing players and the sport.

High numbers in the Atoms division provided enough depth to again enter a second team in the competition. The ‘Blackhawks’ enjoyed the season and continued to develop foundation skills and hockey sense. The ‘Canterbury Eagles’ had a very successful season ending the season undefeated. It was great to see players moving up from the Mites program to fill the ranks in Atoms. Canterbury also participated in the Atoms Only tournament held in Newcastle and came home with Gold. Special thanks to Scott Wardlaw and Ho Lee for their dedication and passion in coaching these teams. Furthermore, Danny Soo and Vlad Rubes deserve recognition for their support on and off the ice in developing this future generation of players.

For the Canterbury Pee Wee team we continue to see the results of a strong development in junior hockey. For the past two years, under the guidance of Don Scurfield, the focus for this age group has been to develop skills and behaviour that focus on team play. Individual skills focused on skating and moving the puck between team mates and team skills reinforce the character building our young people need in life. The team rose to the occasion with all of their hard work this season paying off with a win during the Grand Final. Every member of the team was a great emissary to the sport, the Canterbury Club and NSW Ice Hockey.

Under the leadership of Andrew Reynolds, the 2012 Bantams season was a great success. With a group of returning players this year, our personal development was the focus, building up towards the team’s season goals. The Eagles retained the State Championship, with Jeremie Dubois finishing the season as the top goaltender in the league, and James Marino, Brendan Kong and Lachlan Shumak amongst the Top 10 Point Leaders. A number of players represented NSW at the De Fris and Ginsberg National Championships, including James Marino, Brendan Kong, Lachlan Shumak, Jeremie Dubois, Branson Moore and Dylan Lavery. Our 3 De Fris representatives were also successful in being selected on the new IHA Bantams Selects squad. Special thanks to Kane Spence, Sera Dogramaci and Dave Shumak for all their support on and off the ice, and a big thank you to Deb Marino for her managerial support throughout the season.

The Canterbury Eagles 2012 Midget team, led by Coach Matthew Musumeci, had a productive season . While it did not show in the standings, the team grew closer and developed as a team. Involving those less experienced players into the game more and developing strong leadership characteristics within our senior players. With the help of great assistant coaches, Ho Lee and Danny Soo, and managers, the team grew stronger as the season went on, proving to every team that they are a force to be reckoned with. The foundation has now been laid for a more successful 2013 season, with a majority of the team staying in the midget age bracket and the team continuing to develop.

The Heaton Cup competition, hosted by the Canterbury Eagles, was as successful as always with teams from many clubs meeting for the annual event that fosters the spirit of community, friendship and sportsmanship. The Heaton Cup is also a source of additional fund raising which enables the club to reinvest in infrastructure and programs that will benefit members and the broader hockey community. The Eagles would like to thank Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink – not only for facilitating The Heaton Cup but also their ongoing and continued support of the club and the sport. Special thanks to Wayne Disbery, the rink manager, who not only continued to supply a full hour of ice for each of the junior divisions including the Mites program.

Canterbury is again running two Summer Competitions this year which are both well under way. Special mention must go to Vilem Kunzl, Norm Walsh and Scott Wardlaw for their tireless efforts and commitment to organising these very successful competitions.

The 2012 committee consisted of Peter Barraclough as President, Ho Lee as Vice President, Deb Marino as Treasurer and Scott Wardlaw as Secretary.

The committee would also like to acknowledge and thank the Executive of IHNSW for their efforts and support of our club and the sport.

Peter Barraclough CEIHC President

LCC SAINTS ICE HOCKEY CLUB AGM REPORT 2012

LCC Saints Committee and Players would like to thank the many volunteers ( Scorers, Time Keepers, Penalty Box Officials etc...) as well parents , partners, friends and family who play chauffer, personal assistant and cheer squad to our players. Thank you for your time and dedication. We appreciate that without you all, the games will not be played and our teams would not prosper as they do.

We would also like to thank the LCC SPORTS COMPLEX Staff & LCC Management & Board of Directors, who without their support we would have no home ice.

It was always going to be hard to top 2011, but we did just that, in more ways than one. We had our most successful Summer to start the year, with comps going from strength to strength. Winter 2012, presented many challenges as we struggled with low numbers and inexperience in some teams and an excess of numbers in others. It was impossible to please all. However, despite these initial trials our teams prospered with the support of good coaches and dedicated managers who organised and encouraged our players to success.

Our Atoms flourished, learning and consolidating their skills and gaining experience on the ice. Although they came second in most games they always had a smile on their faces.

Our Pee Wees had a mixed season on and off the ice. Despite losing their top goal scorer toward the end of the season, the team held it together as younger players stepped up and out of the shadows to lift and improve the team. They made it to the semi-finals and gave us a hint of the force they will be in 2013.

Our Bantams team was primarily our 2011 Pee Wee Premier Champions returning for another sensational year with a seasoned goalie. Leaders all year, Champions all season, (bar the last cruel, 10 seconds), Minor Premiers, Grand Finalists & Silver Medallists of 2012.

Our Midgets were full of testosterone and enjoyed full contact, hard-hitting hockey this season. They came to play and never backed down from a challenge. They were back to back winners of the Heaton Cup, Minor Premiers, Grand Finalists and Silver medallists of 2012.

And at the top of our junior teams, we were pleased to see a growing number of Saints players selected to represent both our State and Australia in national and international competition. We had 1 player and 1 reserve selected from our Pee Wees, 5 Saints players selected from our Bantams and 7 from our Midgets to play for our NSW State Team. We had Ellesse Carini from the Bantams competing in New Zealand, Casey Kubara from the Midgets selected to compete in the Junior U18 World Cup and Tyler Kubara and Cameron Rose selected to compete in the Junior U20 World Cup both held in Serbia in 2013.

Our Senior teams were not to be outshone as we fielded two Senior Division 3 teams, two Senior Division 2 teams and one Division 1 team. Despite the mixture of ages, talent and drama they all enjoyed a lively and boisterous year of ice hockey. Our Division 2 Cardinals were 2012 Grand Finalists and Silver Medallists whilst our Division 1 Titans did us proud as our Gold Medal winning Champions of 2012.

Our LCC Saints Perpetual Trophy awards were given to a few select players in recognition for their outstanding performance in 2012. These included Senior Goalie, Dale Burgess and Junior Goalie, Tyrone Mendoza-Kehlet, Senior Player, Matt Bosnjak and Junior Player Corey Kwan. Our President’s Award for going above and beyond the call of duty, for always dedicating his time, energy and focus to the Club and members we recognized and thanked Tyrone Sables. Finally, Life Membership was awarded to long time members and performers Jimmy Elwell and Michael Barker.

As a Club, LCC Saints were successful in hosting many ice hockey events this year in an attempt to both boost the profile of the sport to the community and provide extra exposure and opportunities for players throughout NSW to compete or train. This included our Bantams team being featured on Channel 7’s Saturday Disney promoting the sport of ice hockey nationally, hosting the Canadian Midget Kelowna Tournament, hosting the Atoms Round Robin Tournament and Hosting the International Girls in Ice Hockey Event.

Finally, we have recently upgraded our club website. So if you want to know more about what an amazing club the LCC Saints Ice Hockey Club is, check us out on www.lccsaints.com.au . Meet our Committee and discover the secret of our success.

NEWCASTLE NORTHSTARS 2012 REPORT

The 2011/2012 year has been a year of consolidation for the club, dedicating time and resources to improving not only operational changes outlined below but further funding the development end of the club with goalie equipment and training. Recruiting and funding of coaches not only for representative positions but for in-house teams has proven not only necessary but also fruitful with all open competitions having certificated coaches on every bench.

Wishing to continually improve the sport in our region and remain dynamic in response to player and member feedback the NNS committee made changes to the running of the club during the year. Changes included the appointment of a Harassment/child protection officer and implementation of stricter NNS In-house rules for summer competitions.

The Harassment / Child protection officer was appointed along with the release of a harassment policy within the club in response to IHNSW recommending clubs to address these issues at club level. Thankfully the officer was not called upon for any purpose during the year. Stricter suspensions for accrued penalty minutes during the season were implemented with the blessing of team captains. This saw many players tone down their play to a friendlier more skilful game, however a few players still ventured over the line ending up with some spare time to contemplate why they were not on the ice with their team.

Other improvements from past years were continued including running a development in house competition during winter for all ages. The junior in-house competition was again well supported by our Atoms team. The Atoms enjoyed the combination of fewer games requiring long travel to Sydney complimented with local games. We believe this combination allows for plenty of ice hockey with lesser travel to reduce time and economic constraints on parents therefore keeping our younger players in the sport. We would suggest this model may assist any Sydney clubs to relieve player numbers falling away as has been the trend over the past few years.

NNS were able to field a full regulation team in each grade again this year. We remained with six teams as we released the ECSL Viper team to ECSL. We are happy to have adopted the Vipers last year and wish them well in the future with ECSL. We were indeed again privileged this year to have the well experienced and most dedicated coaching staff available. Peter Wong, Rob Duchemin (Atoms) Dawn Watt (Pee Wee) Amelia Matheson (Bantam) Steven Lindsay (Midget) Michael Sinclair (Women) and Joey Theriault (ECSL) were all assisted by organised managers to ensure all players arrived at and enjoyed the games. Congratulations to Joey Theriault coaching the NNS ECSL team to victory over the Rebels in his first year as coach of our AIHL feeder team.

Many of our representative players and coaches were again involved in state teams, some of which brought home a medal from the tournaments. Congratulations to all who participated.

The ongoing great relationship with the management if HISS ensures the longevity of the sport in the Newcastle region. With HISS running learn to skate lessons and advanced development camps including supplying AIHL players to mentor our young players, the club receives a constant flow of eager new converts to the great game of ice hockey including all ages. The club cannot operate without the hard work of the committee and this extends to the coaches, managers, scorers and timekeepers. Although there is a committee of seven there are around 30 volunteers or more who keep the wheels moving forward. Thank you to all volunteers.

This year’s AGM in November will see many of the long standing committee members and volunteers hang up their boots. Fortunately remaining in their positions will be some very strong and hard working committee members to take the club forward over the next few years. It is the end of an era for the club at which point we are in need of parents of the younger grades to step up in give to the sport what they are receiving from it.

ICE HOCKEY CLUB INC. SEASON 2012 REPORT

Season 2012 was a season of growth and good results for Penrith Phantoms, with the addition of a second Senior Div 3 team, the Reapers.

After a predictable start to the Reapers season for a new team, they very quickly learned to play very competitive Ice Hockey resulting in a Grand Final appearance, taking home the silver medal for 2nd.

Penrith Phantoms men’s senior A’s B’s C’s all recorded good wins during their season, unfortunately they were unsuccessful during the finals appearances.

Once again Penrith Phantoms Women’s Team played their way to another Grand Final win after rebuilding the team with new players after last season.

Thank you to Jim Zvonicek for this help during the year with Coaching the Women’s Team.

Penrith Phantoms are running a summer in house season which is producing development players for the upcoming IHNSW winter competition. With an infusion of new members into the Club during 2012 and going in to 2013 after a lot of work from Rob Gray Club Secretary, prospects for the Club’s future look promising.

THE SYDNEY BEARS ICE HOCKEY CLUB INC 2012 REPORT

2012 has been an outstanding year for the Club with many triumphs and victories.

We were able to field teams in all divisions with Bantams the only exception The long awaited return of the Bears AIHL team was finalized which allowed us to draw on the experience of many of their star players at numerous training sessions.

Strong performances in all divisions resulted in the Midgets and Senior 2 winning their respective grand finals and Senior 1 taking out the silver. Our Atoms and Peewees had a successful season and vast improvements across both teams were evident. Our Woman’s team is constantly improving and several players are in our development program to strengthen the team in seasons to come.

Several Bears players were selected to represent Australia and NSW this year, which is testament to the commitment they put into the sport.

Our development league has been well attended this year and has allowed us to strengthen our member base going into 2013. We look forward to the Bears AIHL team in helping to develop the younger players.

Several projects have been undertaken to improve in 2012: 1) Our goal nets were refurbished and look brand new. 2) Hundreds of lashing hooks have been attached to improve netting fixation. 3) The quality of the ice has been improved, in particular the edges where gaps have been an issue.

Moving forward, we will be applying for a government grant to aid in further repairs. Laying new lines will hopefully commence in December this year. Gates and latches will also be looked at. We are strengthening our relationship with rink management, which will enable us to move forward.

The Bears have held there very first in-house summer competition which has been a huge success. Over 60 players across 4 teams have participated and we hope that this will be the first step at getting games back at the rink. We hope to make this an annual event and expand to 6 teams.

Moving forward in to 2013, the Sydney Bears will again focus on the areas of:  Player development- improving how we run our development league  Coaching development- several volunteers obtained their level one coaching accreditation. Further development of these individuals will be undertaken in 2013 by the more experienced coaches  Commitment to rink improvements- momentum in this area has been gaining and we are aiming for the return of games. I would like to thank IHNSW for their support and guidance throughout the season and look forward to 2013

THE NORWEST EMPERORS ICE HOCKEY CLUB 2012 REPORT

Special thanks goes out to the committee and all those club members who work hard to ensure the season runs smoothly and for making everyone feel welcome to our sport. We also owe a huge thanks to our outstanding team of coaches who enthusiastically and with great commitment took on the challenge of coaching.

The club was successful in fielding 7 teams this year – Atoms / Peewee / Bantam / Women / Senior 1, 2, and 3.

For a third year in a row now, Emperors Atoms performed at the highest level at the Newcastle Only Atoms tournament 2012. After sending a team each year since the club was formed, this year, the team performance was again outstanding and just missing out in defending their championship and finishing a fantastic 2nd. Congratulations to all those involved.

Junior team performances saw a huge improvement at the Peewee level with a mixed bag of results during the regular season, and juggling coaches and player injuries through out the year, the team successfully qualified for the play offs. The team continued their winning ways and secured their spot in the finals. It was an outstanding performance by the team again versus Canterbury Eagles at the grand final. The final score ended 2-1 to Canterbury, who narrowly won the NSW championship. What a game.

Despite the competitive challenges at bantam level, the vast majority of players showed major skill improvements and we expect to improve again in the next season. The club was very thankful toward the players and the coaches for their commitment despite the level of competitiveness and we hope to be successful and get some points on the board.

The Emperors club would like to send out a thank you to Fiona Moon for successfully organising an Emperors women’s team this year. It was a welcome sight to not only see another women’s team in the competition, but also a providing place for the younger players coming up through the junior ranks, as well as a place for mature aged development players to play. The club will look forward to growing the team in the years to come.

This year the club entered a team into the senior 1 competition. The team played well enough to not finish last on the ladder and the club is extremely proud of their achievement. Senior 2 team secured a spot in the play offs again, and were knocked out after the first round. Senior 3 were the highlight senior team winning the championship. Congratulations to all senior players and coaches and those who assisted with Referee duties.

Congratulations to Colin Kirk for taking out the Best Goalie award, and Andrew Fowler who took out the MVP award.

Congratulations to the Emperors who were selected in representative teams: James Downie, Jack Ransome, and Jeremy Vasquez were selected in the NSW team that won the gold medal at the Phil Ginsberg Tournament. The reserves were Dale Tilsted, and Danny Blazevic.

Special mention that a total of 10 players from the Peewee team have been selected to play in tournaments in Quebec and Vancouver in 2013. The club wishes them every success. The players are James Barton, Joel Berthold, Ben Burton, James Downie, Paul Kim, Jakob Holmgren, Jack Ransome, Dale Tilsted, Jeremy Vasquez, Jesse Wilson.

This year, at the end of the clubs 6 year history another 6 players were recognised for their club loyalty and had also played five consecutive years as an Emperor. We look forward to 2013, and our 7th year of competition, when we will continue to see the results of the hard work by the players and their coaches. I’m sure we will see more great performances on the ice and more Emperors earning places on representative teams.

ECSL WINTER SEASON 2012 REPORT

Well another year ended for ECSL with excellent results. Our tryouts at the start of the year were fantastic with about 60 players attending, Including 6 goalies looking for positions.

Our comp this year was up and down with teams beating each other on a regular basis, which shows how balanced the teams were. Our season was such a success, having to wait until the final round was completed, to know which teams were to make the playoffs.

A great grand Final series between Rebels and Northstars, which resulted in Northstars winning the inaugural Warwick Griffith trophy. Congratulations to the Newcastle boys.

ECSL will be moving forward into next year with a lot of new changes that will improve our league.

This was the first year of our new website, and it was a huge success. Players and Coaches had great access to statistics and general ECSL information. The stories and photos provided were great to see and the fans loved it.

Last but not least I would like to say thanks to all the coaches managers & volunteers for such a great effort this year making ECSL an enjoyable league to be involved with and to the players for their huge effort this year as well hope to see you all next year.
