While it is obvious. that these comic books can be used in the classroom as a source of reading material, it is tot so obvious that these comic books, with great economy, simplicity, and narrative density, can be used to further introduce novice readers to the techniques found in narrative and to the terms employed in the study and discussion of a narrative. The output of the Marvel Conics Group in particular is literate, is both narratively and pbSlosophically sophisticated, and is ethically and morally responsible. Some of the narrative tecbntques found in the stories, such as the Spider-Man episodes, include foreshadowing, a dramatic fiction narrator, flashback, irony, symbolism, metaphor, Biblical and historical allusions, and mythological allusions.4MKM1 4 4 *********************************************************************** * Reproductions supplied by EDRS are the best that can be made * * from the original document. * *********************************************************************** ) U SOEPANTMENTO, HEALD.. Their motives are very transparent, especially in a universe where casual mind reading and precognition are dime a dozen abilities. This means a lot of mystery can be lost when joe schmoe can tell everyone who you are, what you think, and what you are going to do. However, none of this applies to you any longer. You are a hard person to read and incredibly difficult to predict. Your motives and behavior are nearly impossible to decipher except through dedicated attempts by those with the right abilities.. • The Kirby Genre
KIRBY AS A “GENRE”!! JOHN A. WALSH, INDIANA UNIVERSITY 2006 COMIC ARTS CONFERENCE COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA 20-23 JULY 2006 THE KIRBY GENRE AS ONE OF THE GREATEST COMICS CREATORS OF THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY, JACK KIRBY HAS HAD A LASTING INFLUENCE ON THE COMIC BOOK GENRE. BUT MORE SO THAN MANY OTHER GIANTS OF THE ART FORM, JACK KIRBY—AS A CREATOR, WRITER, AND ARTIST—LEAVES AN IMPACT THAT EXTENDS BEYOND MERE IMITATION OR STYLISTIC INFLUENCE. HIS CHARACTERS, HIGHLY STYLIZED DRAFTSMANSHIP, AND THE THEMES AND MOTIFS OF HIS WORK RESURFACE AGAIN AND AGAIN IN COMICS THAT STRIVE TOWARDS KIRBY’S UNIQUE COMBINATION OF STYLE, IMAGINATIVE ENERGY, AND MODERN-DAY MYTHOLOGIZING. WITHIN THE LARGER DC AND MARVEL UNIVERSES AS WELL AS INDEPENDENTLY, KIRBY CREATED A DISTINCT “KIRBYVERSE” THAT CONTINUES TO PROVIDE RAW MATERIAL FOR NEW CREATIVE WORKS. THE SIZE, RICHNESS, AND COMPLEXITY OF KIRBY’S CUMULATIVE WORK AND THE VARIED, CAREFUL, LOVING, AND SOMETIMES IRONIC HANDLING OF THAT WORK BY LATER ARTISTS COMBINE TO CREATE AN EVEN RICHER INTERTEXTUAL AND INTERVISUAL NETWORK OF COMICS, IDEAS, IMAGES, SYMBOLS, AND STORIES. SOME FEATURES OF KIRBY’S WORK THAT RESURFACE IN THE KIRBYESQUE WORK OF LATER ARTISTS INCLUDE: • IDIOSYNCRATIC AND HIGHLY STYLIZED DRAFTSMANSHIP • SIMPLE PANEL LAYOUT AND COMPOSITION • INTRICATELY DESIGNED MECHANICAL IMAGERY TOM SCIOLI AND JOE CASEY’S GØDLAND. • NOSTALGIC RETURN TO EARLIER WORKS, E.G., 1960s CAPTAIN AMERICA, 1970s NEWSBOY LEGION • USE OF EMERGING POPULAR CULTURE, E.G., BIKERS (”OUTSIDERS”), HIPPIES (”HAIRIES”), AND HORROR MOVIE WHAT IS A GENRE? • Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances by Bob Wolniak
Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances By Bob Wolniak ased initially on the Bob Fronczak list from Avengers Assemble and Avengers Forever websites. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series.
