Poetry Notes A poem that has five lines. 1. Cinquain: The first line has one noun. The second line has two adjectives that describe the noun. The third line has three verbs that describe the noun. The fourth line has four words to express the noun. The final line is a noun that renames the original noun. Example: Vicki Kindhearted, Knowledgeable Cooking, Cleaning, Hugging Loves More Than Anyone Mother You will follow the format of the handout I gave you, where you 2. Example: Green is the color of plants Green is the color of frogs Green is the color blue and yellow makes Green is the color of apples and grapes Green means go when you’re in a race Involves writing individual words or entire poems in shapes to 5. Concrete represent the meaning of the words or poem. Poem Example: I wrote a poem about Winnie The Pooh, and then traced a picture of him only using my poem to create the lines. 6. Five Senses Describe a topic using all five senses. Example: I hear the steak sizzle on the grill I see the outside drip and my drool gland fill I smell the meat coming, an exciting thrill I touch the sharp knife, starting to cut my meat I taste juicy steak, something your mom can’t repeat! This seven lined poem is written in the shape of a diamond! 7. Diamante 1st - choose two nouns that conflict with each other. Place one noun on top line and the other on the bottom line. 2nd – Line two has two adjectives that describe the first noun. 3rd – Line three has three participles or verbs ending in “ing.” 4th – Line four has four nouns. The first two are about the first noun, and the second two are about the noun on the 7th line. 5th – Line five has three participles or verbs ending in “ing” describing the noun on the 7th line. 6th – The sixth line has two adjectives describing the noun on the seventh line. Example: Kindergarten Fun, Stress-Free Singing, Running, Playing Nap-Time, Recess, Finals, GPAs Worrying, Studying, Planning Hard, Stressful Senior Year This Japanese form of poetry has only 3 lines with a total of 8. Haiku seventeen syllables. Line 1: There are five syllables. Line 2: There are seven syllables. Line 3: There are five syllables in the last line. The subject is always about nature or the seasons. Example: The trees that I pass Turning red and yellow fast Make my path lovely Each line in the poem must begin with a preposition. 9. Prepositional Poem Christmas On the sleigh pulled by horses Into the white and drifted snow Over the river Through the woods To grandmother’s house we go! Contains thirty-one syllables. 10. Tanka 5 syllables in the first line. 7 in the second line. 5 in the third line. 7 in the fourth line. 7 in the last line. Cruises Cruises can be fun (5) Cruises can be relaxing (7) They’re sometimes crowded (5) But you can travel on seas (7) They’re perfect for vacations (7) Each line of the poem begins with one letter in the title/subject of 11. My Grandmother LOVED to sing, but as she got older every time she tried to sing she would have a coughing fit. After she passed, and I heard this song, “I could only imagine” her up in heaven singing her heart away without coughing!!! .
