Prior to being appointed to the managerial seat in Houston, Lawless had spent the 2014 season in the Astros minor league system as an infield coach at Double A Corpus Christi. From the beginning of the season through May 26, Lawless served as interim manager for the Triple A Oklahoma City RedHawks while Tony DeFrancesco was on medical leave. Lawless has close to 35 years of experience in baseball as a Major League player, minor league manager and coach. The Pennsylvania native has been in the Astros organization since 2009, where he has served as an infield coach (Triple A Oklahoma City - 2013), roving infield instructor (2012) and manager (Double A Corpus Christi - 2011, Class A Advanced Lancaster - 2010, Class A Lexington - 2009). The Boston Red Sox Friday, November 15, 2019 * The Boston Globe Xander Bogaerts finishes fifth in American League MVP race Julian McWilliams Xander Bogaerts finished fifth in American League MVP Award voting, the highest of his career. The Red Sox shortstop was 13th in 2013. Bogaerts hit .309 with a career-high 33 homers and 117 RBIs. Bogaerts tied Nomar Garciaparra for the most extra-base hits in a season by a Red Sox shortstop (85). Garciaparra did it in 1997 and 2002. Bogaerts’s 117 RBIs were the most in a season by a Red Sox shortstop since Garciaparra had 120 in 2002. Bogaerts was just the third shortstop in MLB history with at least a .300 batting average, 85 extra-base hits, and 115-plus RBIs. The others are Alex Rodriguez, in 1996 with the Mariners and 2001 and 2002 with the Texas, and Garciaparra. Bogaerts finished behind the Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu, who pulled in 10 fourth-place votes to Bogaerts’s six. Mookie Betts was eighth, Rafael Devers 12th, and J.D. Martinez was tied for 21st in AL voting. MLB speaks with Alex Cora as it investigates Astros’ sign-stealing Peter Abraham and Alex Speier SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Red Sox manager Alex Cora is one of the key figures into Major League Baseball’s investigation of the Houston Astros, an appraisal that goes beyond charges of sign stealing in 2017. Cora, who was bench coach of the Astros in 2017, has spoken to officials charged with determining to what degree Houston flouted rules against using cameras to pick up signs from opposing catchers.

  • 2020 International League Field Managers Eight Il Clubs to Be Led by New Skippers This Season
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 11, 2020 2020 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FIELD MANAGERS EIGHT IL CLUBS TO BE LED BY NEW SKIPPERS THIS SEASON When the International League's 137th season opens on April 9, eight of the circuit’s fourteen teams will have a new manager leading the quest to capture the coveted Governors’ Cup trophy. Only six managers return from the 2019 season, although several of the League’s new field generals bring pre-existing ties to their teams and communities. It is the first time since 2006 that more than half of the circuit’s clubs changed managers during an offseason. The reining IL Manager of the Year Damon Berryhill is the International League’s longest- tenured manager, preparing to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Gwinnett Stripers. Also hoping to get his team back to the postseason is Brady Williams, who took Durham to the finals in his first year with the Bulls in 2019. They will be challenged in the South Division by another returning manager in Norfolk, Gary Kendall. The 2018 IL Manager of the Year, Lehigh Valley’s Gary Jones, will lead the IronPigs once again this season. Like Jones, Brian Esposito in Indianapolis is also at the helm for the third straight campaign. IL Hall of Famer Billy McMillon will manage the Red Sox for the franchise’s final season at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Two men have found themselves moving from a coach’s role to the manager’s chair in 2020. Pennsylvania-native Doug Davis (former Syracuse manager) takes over in Scranton/Wilkes- Barre after three seasons coaching, while in Columbus, Ohio-native Andy Tracy is the new manager after helping lead the Clippers to the 2019 Governors’ Cup title as hitting coach.

A defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US Navy would expand its presence in the Mediterranean to four destroyers from three. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, en route to Asia, said Obama had asked the Pentagon for options on Syria, where an apparent chemical weapons attack that killed as many as 1,000 civilians has upped pressure on Washington to respond. “The Defense Department has responsibility to provide the president with options for all contingencies,” Hagel said. “And that requires posi- tioning our forces, positioning our assets, to be able to carry out different options - whatever options the presi- dent might choose.” He did not elaborate. The defense official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said the USS Mahan, a destroyer armed with cruise missiles, had finished its deployment and was due to head back to its home base in Norfolk, Virginia.
