SUPPLEMENTAL BIOS ASTROS COACHING STAFF TOM LAWLESS 1 Full Name: Thomas James Lawless INTERIM Opening Day Age: 57 Bats/Throws: Right/Right MANAGER Born: 12/19/56 in Erie, PA Resides: St. Louis, MO Managerial Assignments: Triple A Oklahoma City (interim: 2013, 2012), Double A Corpus Christi (2011), Class A Lancaster (2010), Class A Lexington (2009), Class A Frederick (2003- 04), Class A Fort Wayne (2001), Class A Peoria (2000), Class A Cedar Rapids (1994-96) Tom Lawless was named the Astros interim manager on Sept. 1, 2014, in his sixth consecutive season with the Astros organization. Prior to being appointed to the managerial seat in Houston, Lawless had spent the 2014 season in the Astros minor league system as an infield coach at Double A Corpus Christi. From the beginning of the season through May 26, Lawless served as interim manager for the Triple A Oklahoma City RedHawks while Tony DeFrancesco was on medical leave. Lawless has close to 35 years of experience in baseball as a Major League player, minor league manager and coach. The Pennsylvania native has been in the Astros organization since 2009, where he has served as an infield coach (Triple A Oklahoma City - 2013), roving infield instructor (2012) and manager (Double A Corpus Christi - 2011, Class A Advanced Lancaster - 2010, Class A Lexington - 2009). In 2012, Lawless finished the season as the interim manager of the Triple A Oklahoma City RedHawks after manager Tony DeFrancesco was promoted to the Majors to serve as the Astros interim manager. Prior to joining the Astros organization, Lawless spent three seasons as a minor league roving infield and baserunning instructor for the Baltimore Orioles (2006-08). In 2002, he spent the season working for the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball as an on-field operations assistant under the supervision of former Astro Bob Watson. Lawless also served as a coach for China during the 2008 Olympic Summer Games. Lawless began his coaching career in 1992 as a minor league infield and baserunning instructor for two seasons in the California Angels system. In 1994, his first season as a manager, Lawless led the Class A Cedar Rapids Kernels to the Midwest League Championship. The former infielder played eight seasons in the Majors for Cincinnati, Montreal, St. Louis and Toronto, and was traded from the Reds to the Expos for Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader Pete Rose in 1984. Lawless is a graduate of Strong Vincent High School (PA) and the Behrend College of Penn State University with a degree in political science. He and his wife of 32 years, Cheryl, have three daughters; Jessica, Samantha and Hillary, and reside in St. Louis, MO.
