Box 0001, LASU Post Office, Lagos, Nigeria 1Corresponding author’s e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The growth patterns, diet composition, and sex ratio of Giant African threadfin, Polydactylus quadrifilis (Cuvier, 1829) was investigated in Ologe lagoon in Nigeria to provide necessary baseline data toward the development of fisheries in Lagos lagoon system. A total of 180 individuals were caught from Ologe lagoon with gill and cast nets between October 2007 and September 2008. The fish measured between 90 and 490 mm Total length and weighed 8.5-950 g Body weight, respectively. The length-weight relationships were Log W = -4.96 + 2.92 Log TL (n = 83, r = 0.96) for males and Log W = 3.44+2.27 Log TL (n = 41, r = 0.88) for females. The growth exponential was near isometric for males (b = 2.92) and allometric for females (b = 2.27). Condition factor (K) of the fish ranged from 5.2 × 10-4 to 1.3 × 10-³ g/mm3 for males and 4.24 × 10-4 to 1.3 × 10-³ g/mm3 for females. 53.33% of the stomachs had foods, while 46.67% were empty. The species has piscivorous habit and carnivorous in nature. -

Striped threadfin fish (Polydactylus plebeius Broussonet, 1782) belongs to the family Polynemidae and is a demersal fish that is mostly caught in Merauke and surrounding waters by small and medium scale fishermen. The use of this fish is carried out without regarding the sustainability of resources, so management based on scientific studies is needed. The study was conducted for two years in a row, namely in March-December 2017 and in April-December 2018, with a survey method that was assisted by enumerators, and resulted with a total sample of 7,641 fish. Fish size structure was 23-43 cm in 2017 and 19–49 cm in 2018, with isometric growth property. The sex ratio of the fish was found to be out of balance with the size of the male sample and female sample of fish spreading at every size interval. The gonad maturity level amounted for 97.2% specimens in immature condition, for both male and female. The length of first capture fish (Lc) was getting smaller, namely 31.06 cm in 2017 and 30.21 cm in 2018. The natural mortality was smaller than the fishing mortality, with an exploitation level of 0.58. This means that the exploitation status of fish was overexploited, and that management and supervision must reduce fishing pressure, to achieve sustainability. -

David Johnson2 & Aléssio Datovo1 The most remarkable anatomical specialization of threadfns (Percomorphacea: Polynemidae) is the division of their pectoral fn into an upper, unmodifed fn and a lower portion with rays highly modifed into specialized flaments. Such flaments are usually elongate, free from interradial membrane, and move independently from the unmodifed fn to explore the environment. The evolution of the pectoral flaments involved several morphological modifcations herein detailed for the frst time. The posterior articular facet of the coracoid greatly expands anteroventrally during development. Similar expansions occur in pectoral radials 3 and 4, with the former usually acquiring indentations with the surrounding bones and losing association with both rays and flaments. Whereas most percomorphs typically have four or fve muscles serving the pectoral fn, adult polynemids have up to 11 independent divisions in the intrinsic pectoral musculature. The main adductor and abductor muscles masses of the pectoral system are completely divided into two muscle segments, each independently serving the pectoral-fn rays (dorsally) and the pectoral flaments (ventrally). Based on the innervation pattern and the discovery of terminal buds in the external surface of the flaments, we demonstrate for the frst time that the pectoral flaments of threadfns have both tactile and gustatory functions. Polynemids are easily identifable as a natural group based on their external morphology, particularly their dis- tinct pectoral fn divided into a dorsal part, with 12–19 sof rays united by an interradial membrane, and a ventral portion with around 3–16 isolated rays that are usually elongated, forming flaments with tactile functions1,2. -

A total of 1656 fish species under two classes, 40 orders, 191 families and 683 geranra reported from marine and estuarine waters of Tamil Nadu. In the checklist, 1075 fish species were primary marine water and remaining 581 species were diadromus. In total, 128 species were reported under class Elasmobranchii (11 orders, 36 families and 70 genera) and 1528 species under class Actinopterygii (29 orders, 155 families and 613 genera). The top five order with diverse species composition were Perciformes (932 species; 56.29% of the total fauna), Tetraodontiformes (99 species), Pleuronectiforms (77 species), Clupeiformes (72 species) and Scorpaeniformes (69 species). At the family level, the Gobiidae has the greatest number of species (86 species), followed by the Carangidae (65 species), Labridae (64 species) and Serranidae (63 species). Fishery status assessment revealed existence of 1029 species worth for capture fishery, 425 species worth for aquarium fishery, 84 species worth for culture fishery, 242 species worth for sport fishery and 60 species worth for bait fishery. -

Garwood Abstract This study was aimed at determining the characteristics of the fish assemblages in nearshore coastal waters of the remote Canning region of tropical Western Australia and to obtain sound quantitative data on crucial aspects of the biology of the two threadfin species, which are commercially and recreationally important in those waters. The community studies focused on comparing the species compositions of the fish faunas found over bare sand and in mangroves and rock pools and on elucidating the factors that influence those compositions. The population studies concentrated on exploring the hermaphroditic characteristics, size and age structures, growth and stock status of the two species of Polynemidae. The arid Canning coast of north-western Australia, which lies between Cape Leveuque (16°21 ′ S, 123°02 ′ E) and Cape Keraudren (19°57 ′ S, 119°46 ′ E), does not contain rivers and thus also estuaries, which traditionally provide alternative fish nursery areas to those found in nearshore waters. It is also subjected to some of the largest tides in the world. -

First record of Polydactylus mullani (Polynemidae) from the Sultanate of Oman by Philippe BÉAREZ* (1), Sophie KERNEUR (2) & Hiroyuki MOTOMURA (3) RÉSUMÉ. - Premier signalement de Polydactylus mullani (Polyne- midae) à Oman. Le barbure à tâche noire d’Arabie, Polydactylus mullani, est une espèce endémique de la mer d’Arabie, vivant le long des côtes indiennes et pakistanaises. Sa présence est ici signalée pour la pre- mière fois à l’extrémité sud-ouest du golfe d’Oman. Il se pourrait que P. mullani ait été confondue jusqu’à présent avec Polydacty- lus sextarius, dans la mesure où, jusqu’en 2001, la première espè- ce n’était considérée que comme une sous-espèce de la seconde. Cependant, P. mullani n’est cité dans aucun des travaux traitant des poissons d’Oman postérieurs à 2001. Le nombre d’espèces de Polynemidae connues en Oman s’élève donc aujourd’hui à trois : Eleutheronema tetradactylum, P. mullani et P. plebeius.
