t is a long-held tradition in Polynesian cultures that guests be treated well, fed well and welcomed with and dance. For more than 30 years, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and ISpa on Ka‘anapali Beach has faithfully followed that tradition by presenting its Drums of the Pacific Lu‘au. The popular event has entertained more than two million guests since the resort opened in 1980. Now, the Hyatt is taking a good thing and making even better by making enhancements to the lu‘au. As part of a $10 million renovation project, the Hyatt has refreshed the site where the lu‘au is held, the oceanfront Sunset Terrace, by resurfacing the flooring, adding additional restroom facilities, adding a new, elevated group seating area and redesigning the lu‘au’s tables and chairs. New interactive elements are also being added to the performance to encourage guests to participate and immerse themselves in Hawaiian culture. For example, dancers recruit guests from the audience, including keiki (kids), to come up on stage to learn a few hip-shaking Tahitian dance moves, creating perfect photo ops that make great, lasting souvenirs. New costumes have been designed for the lu‘au show and additional dancers, including three fire

10 I mokuleleairlines.com Issue 7 I 11 dancers, will now perform. All of renovations are ADA-compliant, including a ramp that leads up to the stage, so anyone who wishes to can take part in the hula lesson. But the very essence of what makes the lu‘au such a popular Maui attraction will remain the same. Guests are presented with a shell lei upon arrival (along with a fresh Mai Tai or fruit punch) and will continue to be welcomed by the haunting sounds of the conch shell, the beating of drums and traditional Hawaiian chants. They’ll likely never forget the torch lighting ceremony or the authentic imu ceremony — the unveiling of the main dish, Kalua Pua’a (roasted pork). And they certainly won’t leave hungry or thirsty, thanks to the all-you-can-eat buffet that includes a lavish dessert bar and an open bar. The emcee is always happy to recognize audience members who are celebrating special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries or honeymoons. The lu‘au show itself is a journey through the islands of Polynesia. Guests are treated to a diverse array of performances, such as a tribute to Tahitian voyagers, graceful Hawaiian hula, festival dances of the Maori people and dramatic fireknife dances, as they “travel” through old Hawa‘i, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, Tahiti, Tonga and Rarotonga. The lu‘au is offered year-round at sunset and lasts approximately three hours. In addition to the updates made to the Sunset Terrace, the Hyatt Regency Maui’s renovation project also encompassed other areas of the resort, including a redesign of its ocean suites and updates to the Swan Court restaurant and what the resort calls its “best kept secret,“ the Grotto Bar. The Grotto Bar is nestled behind two waterfalls and offers yet another unique experience for guests staying at the Hyatt. For more information, visit www.maui.hyatt.com.

Each year, as many as 12,000 humpback whales leave their summer feeding areas off of the west coast of North America and make the 3,000-mile journey to Hawai‘i’s Twarm waters to mate, give birth and nurse their young. They typically start arriving in late September or October, and this year they were right on schedule. The Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) reported their first official sighting on October 5th. The adult humpback was spotted off the coast of Maui heading north toward Ma‘alaea Bay. Now, more and more whales will continue to arrive, with the peak whale-watching season occurring in February and March. While humpbacks can be spotted off of all of the islands, some of their favorite breeding grounds are the waters around Maui, Moloka‘i, Lana‘i and Kaho‘olawe. They’ll return to their summer feeding grounds in late spring.

16 I mokuleleairlines.com Issue 7 I 19 To say that the whales make a big comeback is an under- statement. Adults can range from 42 to 45 feet long and weight up to 40 tons. During their summer feeding season, they can consume as much as a ton of food a day! They need to “fuel up” because they don’t usually feed while they’re here in Hawai‘i. Except, that is, for newborn calves who drink about 100 gallons of their mother’s milk each day. Here are a few more facts about humpbacks that may surprise you. The marks and coloration on their tail flukes are unique for each whale, which helps scientists identify them and track their behavior. It’s also impressive that in spite of their massive size, they can propel two-thirds of their bodies (or more) out of the water when they breach. And while you may have heard of whale songs, did you know that it’s only the males that sing? In fact, all of the males within a population sing the same song, which is different from the songs of other humpback populations. These songs can last anywhere from six to eighteen minutes, and they can be heard underwater from miles away. Humpbacks can often be spotted from land, but one of the best ways to see them is from a whalewatching cruise. PWF, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting our

20 I mokuleleairlines.com Issue 7 I 21 oceans through science and advocacy, offers whalewatching tours that are led by certified marine naturalists and marine biologists. From November 4 until May 15, PWF even guarantees sightings on all of its cruises. In the unlikely event you don’t spot a humpback, you’ll receive a “Just a Fluke” coupon that entitles you to a free cruise. PWF also hosts World Whale Day, a free, all-day celebration honoring the humpback whales. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, February 15 at Kalama Park in Kihei. And on February 22, PWF researchers will enlist the aid of volunteers to conduct an annual count of humpback whales spotted along Maui’s coastline. For more information about PWF cruises and activities, visit www.pacificwhale.org. Remember, these magnificent mammals are only here for a few months each year, so don’t miss your chance to spot one or more of them, whether it’s by land or by sea. You might even spot a few from your Mokulele flight! TM www.MokuleleAirlines.com Flights and times are subject to change. All flights are operated by Mokulele Airlines.
