Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged Presenters: Evelyn and Greg Keyes

Please note, most all pictures shared were taken pre-Covid, and as a result spacing in many cases was not a requirement.

Welcome to an adventure of both the Mind and Body as we journey into the World of Endorphin release for the Cognitive or Physically challenged, in many cases both.

Often as one journeys through life, especially in the latter part of it, an individual may find challenges afflicted to their body. These challenges may be caused by either internal domains of it, or external incidents that afflict such bodies, leaving them somewhat challenged in being able to function normally.

That is when YOU enter the picture, to lift and inspire those so afflicted to get the absolute best out of the Functionality of their Body. At the same time stimulate their minds, so that it also enters domains of improved Functionality sharing those amazing Feel-Good moments whilst being inspired.

When one looks at the first of 2 pictures just shared, it is easy to see the Benefits of Exercise.

Apart from exercising and improving and/or preventing or delaying deterioration of the Body, the Brain is one of the most important things that can improve the Quality of Life for a person Physically and/ or Cognitively challenged.

How can we do that at the same time as Exercising the Body physically?

Simply by adding the domains of suggestive Adventurism (A trip through the powers of vocal expression, content, and Body/Facial expression). With such sharing as an Instructor/Therapist, you add the many further releases of various Feel-Good chemicals as shared in the 2nd picture released from the brain through the body.

Feel Good chemical released by the brain through the Body

Serotonin is a Mood Stabilizer, which can relieve many moods including perhaps the derivative of such: Depression and Anxiety. There are so many Moods a person experiences, especially those challenged Physically and/or Cognitively.

Endorphins are fabulous for relieving pain! Need we say more of the importance of this? It is obvious, anything that can relieve pain to the body, without the use of external drugs is a huge positive.

Oxytocin is released often during Sexual Pleasure, Childbirth or Lactation. We will not be entering these domains, but will be sharing Adventurism in story telling or imagery suggestion, that stimulates this Cerebral created drug, which can send those shivers of pleasure and finally…

Dopamine simply is the reward chemical released during activity of fun and enjoyment.

The following links (please skim past the advertisements unless interested, which to be honest we were not), show why we have for over 3 decades, presented sharing the domains of Adventurism / Laughter in Exercise for well abled Individuals and those challenged:

Through-out our presentation, we will be sharing domains of Musicality, Interactive Demonstration and of course Adventurism in Story Telling, linked with basic choreography or simple movement. We sincerely hope you will join in, which then hopefully will inspire you to create not just what we share, but a plethora of other possible presentation classes. These will simultaneously enable therapeutic improvement to the body at the same time enhance positive mental stimulation.

A little History and now adopted Methodologies

Over the past few decades, focus on Seated Fitness and Wellness Classes have been on the Therapy of the Body mainly, with an Auditory no-nonsense type of approach. What has not been truly focused on more widely by many Instructors, is the Power of Motivation and Laughter, which has been shown to be a huge winner to accomplish participation.

If one casts their memory back a few decades or do a Web Search, you will see personalities such as Richard Simmons, who was perhaps the first Stage and Television Exercise Science demonstrator that used the powers of Motivation and Laughter to stimulate many in the field of Exercise.

Patch Adams in the USA, during the 1970-80’s was a physician, comedian and clown to mention a few things. He was portrayed in the extremely successful film ‘Patch Adams’ by Robin Williams. Patch was a pioneer that proved the power of improving Wellness in many incapacitated, unwell and/or

cognitively impaired people by the domains of Enjoyment through Smiling, Laughter and Movement.

I (Greg), began sharing Seated Fitness and Cognitive Stimulation via Fun and Functionality of the Body in the late 1990’s. Since then, I have been fortunate to present such across the World from New Zealand to Europe and of course IAFC2003 (from memory), with ‘Creating the Seats of Energy – Fun Chair Aerobics’. Believe it or not, 2 years after Evelyn and I met at IAFC, 20 years ago at this time!

Evelyn did similar styles of presentations in Europe at various venues. No wonder we were attracted to each other, with similar styles and interests. Her focus using similar methodologies as Richard, Patch and myself was for the Lower Functioning Autistic, Cognitively/Physically challenged and the Elderly,

who due to deterioration of their bodies through the aging process, found movement extremely difficult.

Seated Aquatic Classes Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

Pictured is Evelyn presenting to a Seated Aquatic Class at our pool, demonstrating that it is quite feasible to do such. We fortunately have a smaller pool width than normal and demonstration on Deck is on the other side to the Clients. Evelyn got into the water to invigorate and motivate the clients doing specific moves, as the White water testifies.

Our pool is purposely designed with seating as you can see, that enables this for small groups of clients. There are Noodles which can assist, with seats that attach, but often they may require stronger core muscles than your clients have available.

Another possibility for your consideration if wanting to introduce Seated Aquatic classes, is weighted base of the leg’s chairs with rubber feet coverings, to ensure stability and no damage to the pool floor.

From experience and Research / Experimentation in our pool, Aqua Seated Aerobics and Strengthening, Obese clients, although loving the release of weight and benefits of the Aquatic domain around their bodies, is the possibility of them literally floating off.

*When teaching such a class, please ensure you present it on Pool Deck with a chair. This enables you to fully watch every client and be able to respond quickly. It also enables you to nicely demonstrate to everyone movements and transitions.

Wayward Floating Clients

To overcome the problem of wayward floating clients, ensure the depth of water the chairs and clients are in is not too deep that enable this to happen. Unlike a normal aqua class, the depth of water this would be done in, is far shallower. If your shallow end is too high, do not introduce such classes for the type of clientele we are covering today.

*Do NOT Anchor down the clients with a seat belt or other apparatus. This basic No No is in the event someone may fall off the chair. The chair will tip also with them acting as an anchor, or obstacle in regaining the original position of being stably seated. Ensure that distances between clients are approximately Covid distancing or more.

Another great thing about Seated Aquatics, if you are able to consider such with your Pools, is the drag intensity on the legs and when arms are submerged. A favourite of ours when doing this is using both Marching and Classical music. Often with the latter style of music, clients whether under the domains of being Challenged or Fully abled, is becoming the many instruments of an Orchestra or Band.

This is wonderful for things like arthritis in the fingers, etc., by doing actions such as playing the piano on top of the water line or playing the harp just below the water line.

Important Note

If you do decide to try Seated aquatics with your clients, experiment and try everything for at least 10 individual full-length classes by yourself initially. This period will enable you to determine what works for you and does not. The learning curves you would employ and transitions.

Being seated continuously for a class in the Aquatic environment is uniquely different to that of Land

and is an unique style of class which will test the very best of Instructors/ Therapists. 5 Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

Ensure once you feel confident, do 2 further full-length classes on Deck, so you can relate domains of Water Speed vs Land Speed, Range of Motion (ROM) and other idiosyncrasies between Land and Aqua.

Once feeling confident, then recruit either colleagues or fully abled clients, conducting at least 5 classes and get feedback from them after each class as to what worked and what did not. Try to have a variation of Body Types, with hopefully 2 very thin clients and 2 – 3 approaching the other extreme.

By the time you have completed this in-depth training (literally), your confidence level will at a higher level and your awareness at the peak. You will then be further tested in the first few weeks, when actually conducting classes with those challenges we will shortly share.

Encourage feedback, due to learning from those actually afflicted and participating. Due to this begin with smaller classes of perhaps a limit of 8 and as your confidence grows, then your Classes are likely to also.

The other 2 pictures show Evelyn sitting at one of the IAFC’s whilst presenting, and although the Global Instructors are participating in fully upright Aquatics, it is easy to consider the possible adaptations for Land based seated exercise. When you use a seat to demonstrate a movement, simply consider how to transfer these to a Session of Seated exercise and cognitive stimulation.

Fun and Pizzazz, begins the domains of Adventurism

The reason Evelyn and I have for decades, worn many different costumes, bright clothing and use prop’s, is to make stimulation through Storytelling and Adventurism far easier to accomplish than just relying on the spoken word.

It is staggering how a little Fun and Pizzazz with your presentation skills can get many such people moving, grooving and literally have a wonderful time. Often never realizing they are both Exercising, and stimulating the grey matter known as the Core of the Nervous System.

In USA, a wonderful Trio exist, that has been presenting at IAFC’s and across USA for decades. Apart from Aquatics in many fields, they have developed then shared and continue to do so programs for Seated Exercise, focused on both the Physical and Cognitive Improvement is Triple Delight (Jeannie,

Linda & Erica).

6

Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

Pictured are the ladies after receiving their AEA 2018 Global Award for contributions to the Aquatic Industry. They are presenting at IAFC2021: ‘Sit Down … Get Down!, where they will share many further tidbits of both information, and demonstration of how to get the best out of Cardio whilst seated, amongst many other things.

The simple secret of engaging seated exercise/movement with cognitive stimulation, is painting pictures within the minds of clients by being prepared to step out of comfort zones, and actually have a lot of Fun in front of a Class utilizing your creativity mixed with Music suggestion.

Some words of warning:

Avoid the thoughts of just winging it as to speak and not planning the session. The reason is, you must always remember the various Comorbidities of your Clients and focus on how to improve their individual domains of Physical / Cognitive improvement.

Take into consideration the many different individualistic things clients in one session may have as challenges. Plan for adaptations and consider different levels of intensity giving alternatives to accommodate these many variants. Often this takes far longer than planning a General Population Class!

Seated exercise and cognitive stimulation especially land based are literally for everyone. Pictured above is Evelyn’s 99-year-old Mother in The Netherlands. Evelyn looking wonderful as always and myself looking more like a horse neighing, than natural.

Although basically wheelchair bound, she certainly is still as ‘Sharp as a Tack’, as the expression goes, along with extremely good health and strength. The reason no doubt is due to a life of excellent movement and focus on keeping the mind and body as healthy as possible.

Some further words of wisdom gained through the years. Be aware, that although someone may belong

to a special population group, such as the obese, mentally challenged, physically challenged, or elderly

with mobile problems, this does not mean they do not have the ability to think like you, feel emotional 7

like you, observe and react to treatment like you. Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

In fact, they have an operational brain like you, which is always adapting to changes to their body and perhaps their mind in all its functions, on top of everything you experience.

The term aerobic, is well known to all Fitness and Aquatic Instructors/Therapists, but when Instructing to the special population groups we may be working with, this term may purely be related to movement rather than exerting the heart at an elevated level.

Having said this, those not so compromised, may be motivated to move to far bigger Range of Motion (ROM) and at a higher level of particular movements. Remember the adage ‘Move it or Lose it’, is reinforced to the client. Beware that escalating the heart rate to excessive levels, may be contraindicated to various specific clients in your group.

Considering the previous sentence, ensure every participant has been fully screened re health problems and doctors’ advice of limitations and no-go areas relating to overload from exercise.

Client Screening

Follow this up prior to every session, no matter if your participants have been coming to your classes for years. Screen (The term used for getting to know the past and current comorbidities of the client) the individual quickly and privately prior to the session beginning, ensuring they have not had any different health problems. We emphasize the privacy aspect for many reasons, but perhaps the major one is due to many domains such as GI (Gastrointestinal problems), Bladder problems and other organs that may be somewhat invasive to share publicly.

Waivers and Insurance

Ensure you complete with every client a Waiver and that you have Insurance, simply because you are working with many who may have problems that any type of movement make exacerbate leading to major physical trauma.

This way, you are mindful of each individuals’ limitations and be able to give alternative movements or communication signals to accommodate them.

Then prior to beginning the session apart from your normal pre-chat, address the entire group to work within their limits and not be forced beyond this. This can happen often due to fellow participants getting highly active and excited. Having stated this, we also must remember the values of overload in both muscle and the benefits of ROM development and continuance.

Potential Clientele that may benefit from Seated Movement/Exercise mixed with Adventurism

• Injury and Post-Operative Rehab • The variations of Obesity • The Sedentary • Multiple categories of the Aged and/or Frail • Pregnant • Post Natal

• Menopausal

• Blind/Visually impaired 8

• Deaf/Hearing impaired Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

• Intellectually Challenged • The Autistic • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) • Muscular Dystrophy (MD) • Clients with Amputation • Cerebral Palsy (CP) • Parkinson’s Disease • Stroke Victims • Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) • Head and Spinal Cord Injuries: HI and SCI • Joint Diseases • Degenerative Arthritis / Rheumatoid Arthritis / Gout • Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) • Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) • Respiratory Diseases: Emphysema, etc. • Asthma • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) • Metabolic Diseases: Diabetes Mellitus, etc. • Orthopaedic (Skeletal) Diseases • Orthospaedic Disorders • Cancer patients (There are over 100 types of known Cancers) • Osteoporosis • Many more…

Then add to these possibilities, their various ages, moods/demeanors, sexes, physical sizes, faiths,

beliefs, cognitive levels of understanding and responses to such.

Social Experiment

We are now going to share a *POSSIBLE Social Experiment that we would love to try if we were in a far more populated Area with available participants. Perhaps someone in this Group and/or Researchers may wish to put the following into trial and effect.

*The reason for sharing this hypothetical experiment is, please open your minds to the many hints we will give to create both Adventurism and Client Interaction and Motivation. How rapport can be created and many other titbits, that can be used in ALL your classes. These may range from the Physically and/or Cognitively challenged to Able Bodied and Cognitively advanced, or a mixture of all. Most of all the titbits can be used for both the Aquatic and Land Environment of Exercise / Movement and in many other domains.

Recruit 2 totally different groups of people, all with some form of Physical or Cognitive challenges.

From experience with so many types and ages of people, this Social Experiment may be a wonderful testing ground to see how those with many different forms of challenges, may develop socially, cognitively, and physically utilizing the following considerations.

The purpose would be to see if quite different Age groups, and their likes and dislikes are able to effectively begin to blend positively, with other likes and dislikes they normally would never consider and appreciate. This hopefully then would form a collaboration of Understanding, Cohesiveness and Advancement in their demeanors, at the same time progress them physically and cognitively positively.

The essence of enabling this, would be done through the powers of Motivation by Instructors and fellow assistants.

This then hypothetically, would hopefully escalate the domains of positivity in the participants releasing Endorphins there-in, using the power of Music, Exercise/Movement and suggestions linked to Adventurism, by painting pictures in their minds via the spoken word/physicality’s of the Presenter.

Keeping with the domain of this session, participants would be Seat bound, but if some were able to stand, would be permitted to do so if they wished for weight bearing considerations, with one hand on their chair at all times for balance control, beside or behind it, moving to the instructions of the presenter, Obviously, at any time, they would be permitted to return seated and continue in unison with the rest of the Group.

There would be a little Choreography from the Instructor and many Freestyle movements using the KISS Principle (Keep it Simply Simple) and hopefully to beat of the music in unison with the Group.

It is envisaged, most clients all will be on some type of legally prescribed medication, Many, may be on multiple types. (Some may be on medication that is not legally prescribed, such as Marijuana). This being the case, the researcher/coordinator should create a very well-designed, medical drug type screening for multiple kinds of analysis and awareness for the Presenters, Observers, and later analysis by Researchers. This should be created as part of the screening and registration process, prior to the actual social experiment beginning.

Within the group, there is likely to be multiple personality types with a multiplex of Comorbidities. Apart from the Physical or Cognitive domains of their challenges, they may have different appreciations or dislike of Genres of Music. Age differences may result in variation of Social acceptance

in many things, along with IQ, individual Interpersonal Communication skills within each participant. 10

Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

Link all these with their individualism of various Beliefs, Cultures, Histories, and many other domains of this eclectic group.

Let us now hypothetically, create 2 Groups that will be participants in your Social Experiment. (Perhaps you will bring this into reality if you like challenges. Then share your Research and Development, enabling others to learn how to blend various Client Groups together cohesively).

The first group will be between 15-25 years in age (slightly variable if needed). These individuals may love Music Genres like Gothic, Heavy Metal and Rap with quite colorful lyrics. Many may be focused and advocate on Social change and Political Correctness in many domains.

The second group would be comprised of a number of 55 to 80-year-olds, who may love Stage Musicals and Classical Music. Others may be Blues, Country and Western or the 1940’s era music lovers. Many are likely to be set in their ways, due to living a life different in various eras of time to the first group.

We believe in this Social Experiment; the secret will be Pre-Screening all well. By considering their needs and be prepared to slowly interact and blend this array of differences, so initially they will endure each other. Then by using Influence methodologies the endurance and acceptance will slowly blend to become united involvement and appreciation. (We will share some of these Influence Methodologies shortly, as these are powerful tools for Instructors/Therapists to know for creating rapport with anyone and most everyone) .

To begin the experiment, you would after welcoming all to the session, focus then on the younger members of the Group. Query their likes and dislikes and why. Avoid statements that can simply be replied with a Yes, No or Maybe. Phrase your sentences so then encourage a proper reply that will share something of the individuals asked.

At the same time use various areas of Influence engagements, such as Commonality, Liking, Reciprocity. Link these with the powerful domains of Listening Skills, utilizing paraphrasing and acknowledgement via body language, similar to an interviewer on Televison or onstage at the Forum.

Demonstrate at all times by example, you are in fact listening and appreciating what they are saying and sharing. Focus mainly on Music Genres and Non disruptive subjects, especially avoiding areas of Politics, Religious beliefs, etc.

Begin utilizing the links of Commonality with Liking, creating solid domains of mutual interest. Example: ‘What Genre is your Favourite Music?’ Answer: ‘Heavy Metal’. Reply: ‘Wow, I go back to (or … I have read that) when , Megadeth, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, and Slayer burst onto the scenes they really shook up the entire music scene at the time. I believe many feel Anthrax were perhaps the band most responsible for the emergence of the hardcore thrash and speed metal movement of the 80’s.

Song: Sweet Child O’ Mine: Guns N’ Roses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w7OgIMMRc4

A statement reply like this, not only creates knowledge in the Domains of Commonality but begins the process of liking, by reciprocating appreciation of the past into the current. It also will create Rapport with many in this section of the Group so later when you begin your actual physical sharing of music

and Adventurism, they are far more likely to immediately enter the spirit of the session seriously.

Do a little study on other modern music Genres such as Rap, Grunge, Techno, the list is huge. 11

Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

The following link will direct you to most Genres of Music, and then simply do a Web search on the individual ones you wish to glean a few titbits of information for this age group: https://www.musicgenreslist.com/

Obviously keep it short, but interesting with just a couple of people of different genders being asked their preference of Music Styles, The Older Group will be listening and perhaps begin to appreciate a little of the new styles they had heard about, but privately personally dislike, due to the variance of their likes in music. Having said this, the power of a little knowledge and history shared can open up an appreciation of development and begin to build bridges.

Then make a quick change to the older group, utilizing the identical Influence methodologies, asking a few basic Questions of a couple of the participants in the Group. Example: What type of Music do you like? Answer: ‘Classical and Folk’. Reply, ‘Did you know Freddie Mercury from ‘Queen’ studied Classical Music, and in his ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ his influences were from a plethora of sources of Music Genres especially in Classical, Folk and Story Telling.

Song: Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ

The same as Elvis Presley. His initial influence was Gospel Music, which then transitioned into Popular music of the day, and during an appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ he demonstrated his unique style. He made many Recordings, Films and appeared on Stage at iconic venues sharing from Gospel to Rock and Roll, often story telling in many of his songs written by others.

Song: Suspicious Mind: Elvis Presley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_RCvsiavuM

This then opened the doors to others, delving into music experimentation and many Genres began appearing there-after.

Once a few common likes are linked with Commonality and careful consideration of the flow of music, mix it with a hefty dose of Adventurism in your interpersonal communication during the session,

The results are likely to be amazing, by first taking the younger set music of small music variations of interlude with the elderly, so they can attend their first Gig in some of these styles.

Avoid too much or being too long with the various song selections. At the same time as the music is shared, and movement demonstrated, simply add storylines, and make suggestions of creating characters. Example: All becoming the Lead Guitar Player: Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin playing a small, selected part from ‘Stairway to Heaven’.

Song: Stairway to Heaven: Led Zeppelin. See from 6minute point section of song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbhCPt6PZIU

Before long, many of the elderly will transform cognitively into Jimmy Page or Brian May from ‘Queen’, playing the Lead Guitar solo section of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ beginning at the 2 minutes.38 second marker. All playing Air Guitars, attempting the styles of movement of the youngsters.

Then turn the tables with change of Music Genres of the music of the 55- to 80-year-old age group. Use perhaps domains of Classical, Folk, or Music of the Andrews Sisters. As soon as the elders begin moving to simple choreography, strangely the younger ones will . The reason, Reciprocity, because the Elders did this for them and in return subconsciously, they are likely to return the favor and actually love what they may be doing. 12

Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

You may find this following Link interesting to give you some ideas for sharing of storylines (Adventurism) as you are physically running your session. You can share with clients how many modern songs (20th-21st Century) are taken from Classical Music now out of Copyright that anyone can use the melody of.

If the Composer of any given music has passed away, and a period of 70 years since such passing has expired it enters the Public Domain. If it is not in the Public Domain, then like Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Music, his family estate sued Eric Carmen who used his music melodies from such songs as: ‘All by Myself’ and ‘Never Gonna Fall in Love Again’.

In the USA, at the time Eric wrote these songs in 1970, the Copyright was less than 70 years and as a result he was able to use it there, but being Global Successes, in other countries, it was 70 years, so after a settlement of this major case, basically all countries adopted 70 years after death, before music goes into the Public Domain.

The Estate of Sergei’s then received 12% of all royalties. Beware of copyright infringement. Enjoy the following share of music lifted from deceased Composers going back Centuries and many are being used today in Hits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yknBXOSlFQs

These are just some of a huge plethora of possibilities, to create Adventurism in your sharing of storytelling with movement. Whether you share a little history or simply take your clients on a journey of many possible themes. Example music based for themes of sessions based on:

Colours: Green Green Grass of Home, Blue Danube, Red Rubber Ball, Paint it Black, Rainbow Connection, Whiter Shade of Pale, Yellow Submarine, Brown Sugar, etc.

Vehicles: Fun Fun Fun, Drive my Car, The Love Boat, Last Farewell, Don’t Rock the Boat, Daisy Bell (Bicycle built for Two), Sit Down your Rockin the Boat, etc.

Superheroes/Heroes: Holding out for a Hero, Hero, Heroes, Your my Hero, Batman Theme Song, Spiderman, ‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’, etc.

For thousands of more ideas to base your Music sessions and to create seated movements from various inanimate objects, animals, superheroes, or anything that moves, simply do a Web search and type in: Songs about …………

For creating your Sessions, feel free to use my ‘Keyes DNA Core of Concept Creativity Method’, which is quickly shared below.

A more comprehensive share is in my book: ‘Aqua-I-Cue’. The Concept can be used basically for creating anything such as: creating Client Cards, reaching a Goal e.g., Losing Weight, writing a Course or Book. Basically, anything you may want to accomplish, it is a simple breakdown Method to achieve the end result or change to something more achievable.

Duration of Session:

Slow warmup of approximately 5 minutes, 35 minutes of movement in target zones, sharing a mixture of Cardio, Toning and focusing on Range of Motion improvement. 3-7 minutes of Stretching/Cooldown, during which you will share Tidbits of Education during Cooldown/Stretch. This education can be anything from what was done in the class and the purpose, 13

to how the body operates or Nutrition. The choice is yours. Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

To give an idea of the possibilities in solving problems, and creating programs and projects utilizing this DNA breakdown Method. The following is the calculations at 5 times of continuously breaking down a Subject into minute parts at 7 times per part:

Focus Subject 1 1 x 7 Branches and possibilities’ 7 x 7 = 49 Sub-Branches and possibilities 49 x 49 = 2,401 possibilities 2,401 x 2,401 = 5,764,801 possible answer 5,764,801 x 5,764,801 = 33,232,930,569 possible Answers and/or Solutions ∞

Some possible Themes to use movements from, but adapt them to seated positions:

It is as simple as changing the name in the Subject tentacles, and describe the animal or focus topic in question, suggesting and then you demonstrating whilst they mirror you. You and the Clients may interpret movements and sounds, like that of a particular Animal or Action. You may play a particular instrument in an Orchestra or Legendary Band.

Consider the different Sports, imitating the movements and becoming a star of such, However, always remember clients are seated. Design the class and actually do it many times before presenting it. This will give you the opportunity to ensure no Contra-indications of movement are included, and transitions flow for a melodic and free-flowing class, enabling storytelling and Adventurism to occur.

Always remember the biomechanical design of the body, asking yourself, ‘To do this movement, is the body designed for such, especially the variations of the Physically challenged? How can I adapt it to gain the perceived action as if a full bodied or totally cognitively aware client, working within the limitations of those challenged?’.

The possibilities are unlimited of suggestions. Take things like a simple Bicep Curl. Then give it a dozen different names from your Subject Core of Creativity to work those particular muscles. Your subject matter is gained from boundless possibilities in your imagination, watching television or reading 15

books. Simply take your idea and begin using the Concept Creating Model. Et Voila ! Éclat! Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

Technique, Posture and ROM (Range of Motion)

When conducting seated movement and exercise, always emphasize posture and core control. You don’t have to be on the ground to do crunches or in the water with a noodle to work the core. Emphasis should be on alignment of the spine, as best your clients can. Focusing on the core, as the upper and 16

lower body is worked from the chair. Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

This certainly works the Abdominal muscles and depending on the movement, Obliques. This then assists in developing a stronger core to the body, which then resonates through the entire body ,as an emanating secure base for exercise and movement.

With Physical challenges, the crucial thing to remember is being aware of how the body was originally designed to operate, especially the skeletal and muscular systems, so awareness of Range of Motion of a Normal level is first to consider. Then with the different physical challenges many of your clients may have, suggest adaptions that does not exceed the capabilities of the individuals. Domains of ROM may be greatly reduced, along with sensitivities of the body joints and extremities of the body.

This obviously must be a consideration with domains that affect the Heart, Lungs, and other parts of the body, which may fall under the huge list of possible challenges your clients may have. Always suggest to those individuals who may have challenges in those specific regions of the body, to keep within their individual capabilities. Your ‘Duty of Care’ basically dictates that you should be totally aware of the limitations of your client and abide by your ‘Duty of Care’ to them.

With Cognitive challenges, the secret is watching your clients faces and body language, which normally will suggest to you the level of their understanding. More will be discussed on this in the following Section.

Intercommunication Strategies that deliver Rapport with Clients

The domains of Interpersonal Communications, whether they are Physically or Cognitively challenged, or anyone for that matter, are due to every one of us having our own idiosyncrasies, comorbidities, and uniqueness, are extensive to say the least.

Space prevents sharing in detail this topic, which I have shared far more extensively in ‘Aqua-I-Cue’, but the major domains to consider is that Neuro Linguistically, we all have certain traits of how our minds work and body responds.

Variations of Neuro Linguistic Individual Traits of All people and Dominance

Most people have a dominant or a blend of 2 Neuro Linguistic traits (Neuro :Brain – Linguistic : Spoken Word / Mannerisms). Ideally, a balanced blend of the 3 major domains (Auditory, Visual & Kinaesthetic) would make it easy for the individual to basically create rapport with everyone. To do this, simply tune into the style of Neuro Linguistics, of those you are talking to and replicating their particular style or traits of Communication.

Time to share the 3 major Types of Communicator and add a 4th, that in this modern age of Technology, virtually all of us have some aspects of.

Neuro Linguistic Visual Communicator

You may be a Visual Communicator like Evelyn and myself, which is our dominant processes of thought and body actions via pictures coming into our minds.

The other extreme, basically opposite to the Visual Communicator, is the Auditory Communicator. 17 They tend to think and respond principally in Facts, Figures, and regimented methodologies.

Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

These 2 Neuro Linguistic domains are basically opposites in the way their Minds and Body actions respond, and the Proxemics to it.

As an Instructor, or when presenting on stage a Visual Communicator is likely to move about the stage freely. Speaking quickly, sharing their vocals and body language in ways that describe pictures, often sharing many topics at the same time. They are sharing the pictures that are entering their minds to the audience.

A give-away to recognize often a dominantly Visual Communicator is the clothes they wear and perhaps make-up and hairstyles (The latter a thing of my past!). They are Bright and Colourful, often Individualistic, and NOT normally shy or withdrawn.

In my case, it is an overactive Visual mind, thus the reason at times I may sound a Scatterbrain, but that is my High-Functioning Autistic brain mixed with my dominant Visual Communication traits!

The exception of course is an Actor, who is in character, following a Script and Direction from an Artistic Director.

Neuro Linguistic Auditory Communicator

In the case of the Auditory Neuro Linguistic type of person, the mind works a little like a computer, and is unlike the visual communicator, when in conversation describing things.

They normally thrive on Facts, Figures, and the real world. Not a World of make-believe and through pictures of description. Often they love Documentaries, Biographies that share facts and do enjoy sharing their knowledge to people interested in it.

Dominantly Auditory Communicators, normally are more astute when it comes to Financials and order, unlike Visuals communicators, who often are messy and not stick to schedules or have an obscure priority order.

When communicating often or watching a dominant Visual Communicator, the Auditory Communicator can be like the poles of 2 magnets in close proximity of the same polarity facing each other. They repel. Often the Visual Communicator feels the same towards an Auditory Communicator.

If a Visual Communicator is sharing too many pictures from their mind, they often may not realize that by sharing too much, on too many domains at once, this may result in negativity from the Auditory Communicator.

Often, if an Auditory Communicator is doing an Assessment or Evaluation on a Visual Communicator, unless there are plenty of Facts shared, such evaluation is likely to have negative connotations.

In more simple terms, using the 2 Magnets as an example, If the North Poles of each, faces each other, they repel from each other. Opposing poles of magnets attract, so 2 Auditory Communicators, will be likely to often befriend a Magnet of the opposite Polarity (North to South).

The Auditory communicator, normally like to keep on one topic and get a solid conclusion to it. They as mentioned, share facts and knowledge, without the stories or colour often shared by Visual Communicators.

18 Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

This is dominant in the way they share spoken communication, and often the Proxemics are wider than that of the 2 other dominant Communication Types, being Visual and Kinaesthetic. The exception is when barriers may be withdrawn by the Auditory Communicator, to allow a trusted person into their more private zones of their personal space.

Their dress is normally conservative and in a matter that conforms with the traditions of where they work. Many, but not all, Teachers and Researchers are classic Auditory Communicators. If on stage, they prefer to be behind a lectern and refer to notes, to ensure accuracy of what they share.

Characters seen like Abby portrayed by Pauley Perrette in the original ‘NCIS’ series is a Dominant Visual Communicator. If met by an Auditory Communicator, they would be very weary and suspicious of her, due to acting and dressing in the opposite way they feel someone should speak, act and dress.

A classic Auditory Communicator if using the television series ‘NCIS’, is the leader of the main ‘NCIS’ Squad, ‘Leroy Gibb’s, portrayed by . This is why the characters of ‘NCIS’ seem so attractive to most viewers, due to having the different Neuro Linguistic types portrayed, to satisfy all Neuro Linguistic Types.

Neuro Linguistic Kinaesthetic Communicator

The 3rd type of Neuro Linguistic person is Kinaesthetic. Many describe them as deep Touchy / Feely / Caring personality types. Often, dressing as they feel, if Happy and Joyful Bright and Colourful. If Depressed and Withdrawn, darker sombre colours and basic clothing.

In vocal speaking, the Kinaesthetic Communicator often relates to emotions and senses. What they see/saw, hear/heard, emotionally feel/felt within, smell/smelt, physically feel/touched, and taste/tasted.

The Proxemics of the Kinaesthetic Communicator is the least of any Communicator. Normally many love Hugs, and when talking can often without realizing it, place their hand on another’s arm. They also often, come closer to the persons face as if almost sharing a secret when speaking than others.

The character ‘Penelope Garcia’ from ‘Criminal Minds’, was a dominant Kinaesthetic Communicator. Kinaesthetic Communicators often work in domains of Social Work and Caring, etc.

Neuro Linguistic Digital / Visual - Auditory Communicator (DVA)

The final Neuro Linguistic type of person is a Digital Visual Auditory Communicator, is a relatively new style of Communicator with the advancement of Technology, relaying often both visually and auditorily, but rarely with any Kinaesthetic traits or sublimed ones. They speak often like a Visual Communicator, relaying pictures, but also share the Facts and Figures like an Auditory Communicator.

The DVA is a product I believe of the age of Technology and Digital Communications . The “I want it NOW” attitude and impatience if such is not delivered promptly. I believe this may be responsible for many who have no patience in Traffic or when the Computer is slow and the mannerisms and vocals as a response can often be aggressive.

Another trait of the age of technology possibly, is what many refer to as the ‘ME’ Generation, due to the many things easily obtained and available via the world of technology and plethora of images shared via it, in Commercialism and Dramatics via Digital means. 19

Closing notes of Neuro Linguistic Types.

Having shared all this re the 4 Types of Communicators, most of us no matter whether Able bodied, Physically or Cognitively challenged, certainly have one or two dominant Neuro Linguistic sides.

Personally, as a dominant Visual and Kinaesthetic Communicator, with strong Digital Visual communication traits, I have had to work hard to try to both understand and then add into my materials and presentations, domains that will hopefully satisfy the dominant Auditory / Digital Visual Communicator.

Hopefully, these notes, will deliver such materials to satisfy ALL the communicator type of Neuro Linguistics including the Auditory Communicators amongst you. .

Influence Methodologies

We have shared a little on how to Influence people to gain Rapport and openness to positive responses from basically any Individual.

There are 8 major areas in Influence Methodologies, with an 9th described by Professor Robert Cialdini. PhD in his fabulous book, ‘Influence’, Pre-Suation which is basically a word he created meaning, preparing individuals to be persuaded into giving a positive response to most things.

The 7 major domains of which, we will give a very quick synopsis of, which we have referred to 3 are:

Liking /Commonality:

This combination Influence method is simply how you get people to quickly accept you and listen to you and share with you. Find common things or ask a few questions that may appear random, such as favourite places, Musical Theatre or a specific Band, Tennis, Cars, Chocolate, Animal Welfare, etc. Then allow them to talk of their passion, become interested in it and share back positive feedback, establishing a commonality of linked interest.

There is normally something or a few things that are quite dominant every person likes or are interested in. When you discover it or them, even if you are not also into their like, begin speaking about it and give a positive response. This immediately will create a common ground and the person will then likely start sharing and a rapport begins.

Reciprocation:

Reciprocation is simply the act of giving something to some-one, then the person receiving such feels

they have an obligation to return the favor by giving something in return. It is a tool that many 20 charities use in marketing to gain donations, such as sending free cards or a pen as a gift in the mail for

no reason. But once you receive the so-called gift, you feel you need to give something back in return. Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

Scarcity:

Often you see in Tele-marketing and other forms of advertising that only a limited number of any particular item is available, and you need to be quick to obtain one or you will miss out. Like a diamond, the reason they are so valued are their Scarcity.

Another name for this is perceived value, and a classic example is the Whisky brand ‘Chivas Regal’. Originally it was released approximately at 1/3 the value it is today. A new marketing strategy was introduced by the company and overnight, they made absolutely no changes to the Whiskey at all, no changes to the Labelling, Bottles, etc.

The only change was they tripled the price of a bottle of the Whiskey. Consumers immediately thought it must be rare and of extreme value, due to the Price.

Authority:

A uniform whether it be an Emergency Worker, Doctor in a white Coat, the title Professor, Doctor, Judge before a person’s name, or Therapist, Instructor, Trainer, Educator all have the power of Influence without the person needing to say a word. Simply by the visual aspect or Title in most people’s mind, this influences them to accept that the person must know what they are doing.

Social Proof:

Social Proof is simply the method of suggesting that most people are doing a certain thing or wearing a certain fashion or buying a certain product. Fast Food merchandising use it all the time as does testimonials such as 9 out of 10 people recommend ******** product.

Consistency:

Being consistent with the quality of what you are sharing as a Professional is paramount to maintain a positive Influence with your clients.

Often Apathy and Complacency enters the fold after several years of doing a specific job, and as interest wains often so does client numbers and basically the love of why you began doing the job in the first place.

Maintain your enthusiasm and knowledge in your chosen field, and by being consistent to clients the Influence on them will be positive in many ways both to them and you.

Commitment:

Commitment is one of the strongest forms of Influence methodologies, that most times ensures a positive response, especially if the person that your communicating with commits something to the written word. Whether it be via Social Media interaction or more important actual writing with a series of sessions, etc.

The power of getting people to write something has a powerful commitment power of follow-through.

A classic agreement prior to social distancing, etc. was to shake hand in agreement and make a commitment. Obviously in this Pandemic age, this social interaction appears to be becoming a thing of the past. This has been replaced by elbows or foot touches, which seem to be more the physical interaction, but not with the same commitment level as a hand-shake agreement.

Prior to beginning Sessions with a Client, when Vetting and completing enrollment forms, etc., there would normally be some type of Agreement and Commitment to ensure this form of Influence 21

methodology assists with Retention and follow-up from Clients, etc. Page Seats of Adventurism for the Cognitive & Physically Challenged – Keyes GJ & E. 2021

For far more comprehensive descriptions of these Influence Methodologies, I have shared a huge Chapter within the book ‘Aqua-I-Cue’ on the subject. This is a huge topic, along with how to communicate effectively and with control to what is termed as ‘Difficult People’, but these are perhaps other Topics for further Presentations.

Final Secret to be share is how to create Rapport and maintain it.

To create and maintain rapport with most people, is understanding their Neuro Linguistic traits at first meeting, then communicate in a mirror like way, listening and responding in a likewise manner. If their dominant Neuro Linguistic traits are Auditory Communicator, then respond in a likewise manner.

If talking to an Auditory Communicator and your dominant traits are Visual and/or Kinaesthetic, curb your enthusiasm and getting too physically close or touching the person. Speak slower and with articulation. Maintain a singular topic being discussed before moving onto another.

Speak in a brief factual manner, without flamboyant or too personal questions or responses. Consider dominant Influence Methodologies of sharing Authority knowledge, Consistency, Social Proof and Scarcity.

If client’s dominant trait is as a Visual Communicator, allow them to talk mostly and be prepared for multiple questions and jumping from one Topic to another. In Vocal Communication, remember they like to hear descriptive dialogue painting pictures to their mind.

Just discussing Facts and Figures can be extremely boring to them, as also no highs and lows in your voice. It will seem monotonous to them and you may lose them in communication and attention.

Use Body Language as they will watch yours intently, trying to soak up the whole picture of you as an Instructor/Therapist.

With Influence techniques, focus on Liking, Reciprocation, Social Proof and Commonality.

When communicating with a dominant Kinaesthetic Communicator, being their main trait, expect them to be closer in proxemics, their speech may be softer than the previous 2 and often they may trail off, getting softer, or want you to lead the conversation. They are normally wonderful Listeners.

In dialogue, relate to things via the senses in description and they certainly appreciate empathy. Be aware of emotional content at all times of the person you are communicating with, and try more to speak privately with them, in confidence rather than in a group setting.

The Kinaesthetic communicator is perhaps the least likely to be affected as much by DVA traits (Digital Visual/Auditory moods and actions).

Influence traits of Liking, Reciprocation, Authority and Scarcity are strong tools to use when having interpersonal communications with a Kinaesthetic Communicator.

Expect both the Auditory and Visual Communicators to have strong DVA traits, so can be impatient if expectation of needs and wants are not satisfied in some ways.

Perhaps the ideal Neuro Communicator is someone who has a lovely balance of 30% of each of the dominant categories and 10 % of the Traits of the DVA Communicator, which is rare unless trained or naturally born this way. 22

By awareness of what has been briefly shared and address the clients in the methods suggested, Rapport should be forthcoming.

You should be aware of all the domains of Influence methodologies, especially Liking/Commonality, Reciprocation, Authority and Consistency/Commitment.
