  • LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL PANEL on TRANSPORT Pedestrian Schemes for Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui Introduction This Paper
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL PANEL ON TRANSPORT Pedestrian Schemes for Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui Introduction This paper informs members of the details of the proposed pedestrian schemes for Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. Background 2. At the meeting of the LegCo Panel on Transport held on 25 February 2000, the Administration presented the objectives and the general concept adopted in devising pedestrian schemes with particular reference to the Causeway Bay scheme as illustration. Members requested the Administration to provide details of the Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui pedestrian schemes for information. Pedestrian Scheme for Mong Kok 3. The pedestrian scheme in Mong Kok covers the area bounded by Argyle Street, Nathan Road, Dundas Street and Fa Yuen Street as shown in Figures 1 and 1A. 4. The substantial commercial, retail and other economic activities in Mong Kok generate significant transport needs, e.g. loading and unloading, access by public transport, and access to car parks. To ensure general access to this area will be maintained, the pedestrian scheme targets the streets where pedestrian activities are most concentrated. Sections of Nelson Street and Soy Street between Nathan Road and Sai Yeung Choi Street South are designated as fully pedestrianised streets. In addition, Tung Choi Street and the section of Sai Yeung Choi Street South between Nelson Street and Soy Street would be designated as part-time pedestrianised streets. Vehicles, other than emergency vehicles, would not be permitted to enter the streets during specified hours, initially between 4 pm to mid-night. 5. The rest of the streets within the area would be designated as mixed priority streets.

University of Queensland School of Languages & Comparative Cultural Studies Master of Arts in Chinese Translation and Interpreting CHIN7180 - Thesis Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong Student: Shirmaine Cheung Supervisor: Professor Nanette Gottlieb June 2010 ©2010 The Author Not to be reproduced in any way except for the purposes of research or study as permitted by the Copyright Act 1968 Abstract The topic of this research paper is “Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong”. It has been observed that existing translation studies literature appears to cater mainly for long texts. This suggests that there may be a literature gap with regard to short text translation. Investigating how short texts are translated would reveal whether mainstream translation theories and strategies are also applicable to such texts. Therefore, the objectives of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to confirm whether there is in fact a gap in the existing literature on short texts by reviewing corpuses of leading works in translation studies. Secondly, it investigates how short texts have been translated by examining the translation theories and strategies used. This is done by way of a case study on street names in Hong Kong. The case study also seeks to remedy the possible paucity of translation literature on short texts by building an objective and representative database to function as an effective platform for examining how street names have been translated. Data, including street names in English and Chinese, are collected by way of systematic sampling from the entire data population.

  • Drainage Improvement Works at Nelson Street Background Nelson
Drainage Improvement Works at Nelson Street Background Nelson Street junction with Fa Yuen Street and Sai Yee Street has been a known flooding blackspot, mainly because of the inadequate capacity of the existing storm water drainage system. Before the long-term drainage upgrading work, aiming for completion in year 2003, is implemented, short-term measures including the construction of by-pass drains and reconstruction of gully connections had been carried out by the term contractor of the Mainland South Division to alleviate the flooding risk. Programme of Works Nelson Street is a densely populated area and a renowned shopping area for sports wear, hi-fi, video and computer products. The drainage improvement works have to overcome a lot of difficulties. The construction works would not only affect the vehicular traffic and the pedestrian but also the shops. Before the commencement of the site works, the engineer and inspector of works carried out several site inspections and thorough surveys with the term contractor, identified all the problems and worked out the temporary works proposal including the extent of works area, re-provisioning of pedestrian walkways, traffic lane and temporary road markings. We noted that our works would affect the free movement of pedestrians who used to cross the road at any locations that they wished. Our works would make this impossible. It came as no surprise to our engineer that when the works commenced on site, two nearby shop operators immediately approached our staff regarding the influence to their business as the construction works were causing some disruption to the pedestrian flow, and hence the access to their shops.
