He became the second Vice- President to get a second consecutive term after S. Radhakrishnan, who enjoyed two terms from 1952 to 1962. Mr. Ansari won with a thumping majority against the National Democratic Alliance candidate Jaswant Singh. He polled 490 votes against Mr. Singh’s 238. There was never any doubt about the victory of Mr. Ansari, given the numerical strength of the UPA and other parties supporting him. The NDA zeroed in on senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Mr. Singh essentially for political reasons. Having faced dissensions within its ranks in the presidential election, the alliance wanted to demonstrate that that was a one-off incident and no meaning should be read into it. Its purpose was served as it managed to line up all the con- stituents behind Mr. Singh. The JD(U) and the Shiv Sena broke ranks with the BJP and voted in favour of Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential election. Out of the 790 members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha who form the electoral college for the vice-presi- dential election, three are vacant — Mr. Mukherjee was elected President, Vijay Bahuguna became Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and the election of BJP MP J. Shanta was set aside by High Court. Of the remaining 787 members, 47 MPs did not cast their votes. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said 21 members from the Biju Janata Dal, 11 from the Telugu Desam Party, 6 from the Congress and supporting parties, including ailing Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, and two nominated members did not cast their votes. T.K. Vishwanathan, Lok Sabha Secretary General and Returning Officer, said eight votes were declared invalid. K. G. Suresh The conference was organised to Editor-in-Chief commemorate the silver jubilee of Director General, IIMC our Eastern Regional Campus at Dhenkanal, Odisha from where we started our first language journalism programme in Odia. In the last three years, we have given a major push to language journalism launching a Malayalam Journalism programme at our Kottayam, Kerala campus and Marathi Journalism programme at Amravati, Maharashtra campus. This apart, we have upgraded the Certificate programme in Urdu Journalism to a full fledged Diploma programme. We have even started a three months Advanced Certificate Programme in Sanskrit Journalism in collaboration with the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth besides setting up the Department of Indian Language Journalism. Future plans include starting Hindi and Urdu Journalism programmes from our Jammu campus and Bangla from our Odisha campus. Apart from the papers presented at the conference, many eminent academicians have also contributed to this volume. I am confident that this special issue on the state of Indian language journalism and training would be a collector’s issue for both students and scholars as also media persons across the country and would help them in better understanding of the issues at stake and take requisite steps to improve the quality and standard of both language journalism and training at a time when language journalism is growing by leaps and bounds.

  • The 13Th President of India
The 13Th PresidenT of india Pranab Kumar Mukherjee (born 11 December 1935) is the president-elect of India. Mukherjee was a senior leader of theIndian National Congress until he resigned from political office preceding his election as president on 22 July 2012. He will take office as the 13th President of India on 25 July 2012. Pranab Mukherjee began his political career with the Indian National Congress in 1969 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became one of her top lieutenants and was often described as her "man for all seasons". His rise was meteoric in the early phase of his career and he became a cabinet minister in Indira Gandhi's government in 1973. Mukherjee rose through a series of cabinet posts to become the Finance Minister of India from 1982 to 1984. Mukherjee was Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985. Mukherjee was sidelined from the Congress during the Rajiv Gandhi era. He had viewed himself, and not the rookie Rajiv Gandhi, as the rightful successor to Indira Gandhi. Mukherjee lost out in the ensuing power struggle. He formed his own political party, the Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress, but later merged it with Congress in 1989 after reaching a political compromise with Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Mukherjee's political career revived when Prime Minister Narasimha Rao chose to appoint him as Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission and subsequently as a union cabinet minister in the 1990s. He served as the Minister of External Affairs (Foreign Minister) from 1995 to 1996 in Rao's cabinet.

  • India-Bhutan Relations
India – Bhutan Relations Diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan were established in 1968 with the appointment of a resident representative of India in Thimphu. Before this our relations with Bhutan were looked after by our Political Officer in Sikkim. The basic framework of India – Bhutan bilateral relations is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation of 1949 between the two countries, which was updated and signed during the visit to India of His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in February 2007. 2. The updated India-Bhutan Friendship Treaty not only reflects the contemporary nature of our relationship but also lays the foundation for their future development in the 21 st century. The Treaty provides, amongst other things, for perpetual peace and friendship, free trade and commerce, and equal justice to each other's citizens. Our bilateral political relations with Bhutan have matured over the years and are characterised by close trust and understanding and extensive cooperation in the field of economic development, particularly in the mutually beneficial sector of hydroelectric power. High Level Visits 3. This special relationship is further sustained by the tradition of regular visits and extensive exchange of views at the highest levels between the two countries.
