Alex is a good for nothing womanizer who runs a sports club; Oreste is a frustrated classical musician reduced to direct - ing concerts of young boys with little talent; Giacinto is a hard, unforgiving, businessman who never smiles; and Fanny, a conflicted former wife abandoned by her husband who preferred a much younger woman to her. When Alex finds himself in financial difficulties and the survival of his sport club is in danger, the other brothers decide to help him by selling the beautiful family villa in the countryside where the four brothers have grown up and get rid of all its contents. To buy the property will be Zaffarano, the greasy former playmate of the four brothers with a ten-year crush for Fanny and the secret desire to belong to that lucky and happy family that has always looked at him with ill-concealed contempt. This is why Zaffarano bought the villa and has absolutely no intention to give it bacIkN t IoT tAheLmIA wNh WenI STeHrg iEoN mGiLraIcSuHlo SusUlyB aTwITakLeEnSs. from his coma the day after the signature by the notary and the sale of his home. Dear Patrons of the Arts and Italian Culture Dear Patron of the Arts, Miami, October 2014 Starting in 2014 and continuing in perpetuity the Senate of the State of Florida proclaimed the month of October as “Italian Heritage Month”. It is a great satisfaction for us at Cinema Italy that have been celebrating our culture and arts in Miami on Columbus Day and the rest of the month of October for the past 12 years together with our General Consulate, the Societa` Dante Alighieri, ODLI and a number of other cultural organizations. With over 30 film festival and exhibitions in Acapulco, Miami, Atlanta, San Juan, Auburn and New York we have worked hard to let you visit “il Bel Paese” without leaving your home. This journey wouldn't have been possible without our great volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors, most of them having supported us since the very beginning and still doing so today. 2014 also marks the 20th anniversary of the film Il Postino winner of 31 awards, of which three were Oscar including the coveted Best Picture. Cinema Italy has invited Italian super star, actress, producer Maria Grazia Cucinotta to host this year festival as the event Godmother. She will be present throughout all of our events and will be our guest of honor at the Closing Dinner and Award Ceremony on October 14th at Bianca Restaurant in the lobby of the Delano Hotel. This year also marks a considerable expansion on our events pre-festival with free screenings in venues as diverse as the Koubek Center, the Wolfsonian Museum, the Tower Theatre in Little Havana, the Societa Dante Alighieri and more.

  • Masculinity, Stardom, and Italian Cinema 1. the Actresses Listed Were Margherita Buy, Claudia Gerini, and Cristiana Capotondi
Notes Introduction Trouble Men: Masculinity, Stardom, and Italian Cinema 1. The actresses listed were Margherita Buy, Claudia Gerini, and Cristiana Capotondi. Capotondi was bracketed with regular costar Fabio De Luigi in eighth place. Buy ranked nineteenth and Gerini twenty-third. The top male stars were mostly comics (including Alessandro Siani, Claudio Bisio, Christian De Sica, Checco Zalone, Carlo Verdone, and Antonio Albanese). See Ciak, September 9, 2013. 2. The majority of this criticism has been Anglophone, though see Grignaffini (1988). On Loren, see Gundle (1995a) and Small (2009); on Lollobrigida, see Buckley (2000). Gundle (2007: xix) mentions that male beauty could also be discussed, and cites Malossi’s volume on the figure of the Latin Lover. However, it is interesting that La Cecla in that book admits that “it is difficult to take the Latin Lover seriously” (1996: 26), and he is interpreted as a figure of slightly pathetic comic value, rather than as a symbol of the nation. All trans- lations from Italian are my own, unless otherwise stated. 3. See the cover images for Bondanella (2014), Bertellini (2004), Brunetta (2009), Wood (2005), Sorlin (1996), Brizio-Skov (2011), and Nowell-Smith (1996). 4. De Biasio identifies this as a compensatory move on the part of femi- nism: “The omnipresence and presumed ‘universality’ of men in his- tory, in the arts, in science, in public life, has led to the focusing on women’s identity, lobbying for the rights that were still denied them [ . ] and valorizing their achievements and their contributions to the collective” (2010: 12). 5. Jedlowski says: “While we have an abundant literature on the dif- ferent manifestations and transformations of female identity, reflec- tions on masculinity are, till now, few and far between in Italy” (2009: 11).
