PREFACE n 2020, India dealt with the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic with collective measures, Iscientific approach, and awareness. Undoubtedly the second wave of the pandemic is testing our patience and the extent to which we can all tolerate its fangs. The impact of the second wave has seen shortage of medical oxygen across the nation. But, the intelligent use of technology and well-planned resource allocation to tackle the new wave of the pandemic has been dealt with at a war-footing. The current edition, COVID 2021: Nation’s S&T Efforts Against COVID-19, has been compiled to inform our readers and strengthen the usefulness of any published information. This edition contains compilation and coverage of information related to the capacity enhancement of medical oxygen, start-up spotlights, research contributions, and so on. To bridge the gap among scientific contributions, leadership and administrative efforts, and the perspective of the general public, Vigyan Prasar is continuously reaching out to its audiences in the shape of a regular e-newsletter, taking its mandate of science communication, popularisation and extension to the next level. Our effort is firmly based on the fact that “Science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom”. The steady increase in the number of recoveries and the significant and continuous decrease in positivity rate provide us the much-needed assurance that this may be the outcome of improving the health infrastructure and making health the cornerstone at the policy level. We wish an engaging reading to our audiences across all strata of the society and look forward to suggestions and feedback at [email protected].

Indian National Congress: Compendium of Statements, Letters and Resolutions on COVID-19 (March 2020 - June 2021)…………………………………… A1 Executive Summary The mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic has been independent India’s gravest governance failure. The Union government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not take adequate measures to prevent and contain the pandemic. Therefore, there is a Need for a White Paper (Chapter-1) that examines the government’s acts of omission and commission, its impact on India and suggests constructive measures to improve policy responses to the current and future waves of the pandemic. The Modi government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis began with its Early Inaction in January 2020 (detailed in Chapter-2). The government ignored early warnings from experts and political leaders from the Opposition. 1 MSME DI, Cuttack conducts webinar on Oxygen Enrichment Unit developed by CSIR-CMERI CSIR-CMERI 30th April, 2021 In a series of webinars for dissemination of awareness on the Oxygen Enrichment Unit developed by CSIR-CMERI to the MSMEs and other entrepreneurs, MSME DI, Cuttack conducted a webinar on 30.04.2021 amidst the crisis of Oxygen. Prof. (Dr.) Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI delivered the key address in the seminar. Mr Pawan Gupta, Director, MSME, Cuttack and Mr S. K. Sahu, Asstt. Director also participated in the above webinar together with participating a number of MSMEs, Entrepreneurs and Startups across the Odisha region. Prof. Harish Hirani, Director, CSIR-CMERI, while interacting with the MSME representatives shared that the MSMEs of the Nation will be playing a decisive factor in tackling the COVID 19 battle. COVID may impair the lungs to a great extent and this impairment can be rectified by Oxygen Therapy. To properly tackle and control the Oxygen crisis, the CSIR-CMERI developed Oxygen Enrichment Unit (OEU) can provide a veritable solution. Besides, even in a Post-COVID scenario, the Oxygen Enrichment Units can be a game-changer for ailing aged persons as well as Therapeutic Usage of Oxygen, because it helps in detoxification. Since the OEU might be the essential equipment of the future, the Cost of the device needs to be optimised and indigenised manufacturing needs to be boosted. The CSIR-CMERI OEU has been developed with a Simple Architecture and Design Philosophy built with easily available Raw Materials. If innovatively used by the MSMEs, a Single Air Compressor strategically placed outside the room can help serve 4-6 patients at one go.

  • Sankranti & Telugu Cinema Among the Plethora of Conversations I Have
Writertainment.com Sankranti & Telugu Cinema Among the plethora of conversations I have had with my grandmother, the most fascinating of the lot encircled cinema. Growing up in Andhra Pradesh in the 50s and 60s meant that cinema-viewing was an event that required proper planning and execution to ensure everything sails smoothly. Grandma recalls how important it was to schedule the bullock cart well in advance for commuting to the theatre, so it wouldn't clash with the farming activities. From the 50s to the 70s, Nandamuri Tarakarama Ramarao (NTR) and Akkineni Nageshwar Rao (ANR) maintained their hegemony with a dozen credits each to their filmography year on year. Although film-watching had become comparatively accessible by the 70s, thanks to the sprouting number of movie theatres and expansion of public transport, the release of a film, especially an NTR film, was still a highly awaited event. With a new film every month, the star's fans had a monthly event to rejoice. Over the years, the number of movie theatres burgeoned; new stars emerged; VCR and DVD have gained prominence and swiftly faded-out; the number of single screens plunged; multiplex culture soared, internet penetrated every corner of the nation; torrents widened our viewing taste; the yardstick of blockbuster changed from 200 days to 200 crores; and OTT eased everything associated with movie-viewing. A film made before the birth of our grand-parents is now a 'search' away. There has been no better time to procure a film in the ever-evolving world. But in the age of wide-spread accessibility, perhaps we have let go of its value.
