December 2010 | No. 104 Your FREE Monthly Guide to the New York Jazz Scene aaj-ny.com The THE Bad Ass bad Pulse PLUS Mulgrew Miller • Microscopic Septet • Origin • Event Calendar Many people have spoken to us over the years about the methodology we use in putting someone on our cover. We at AllAboutJazz-New York consider that to be New York@Night prime real estate, if you excuse the expression, and use it for celebrating those 4 musicians who have that elusive combination of significance and longevity (our Interview: Mulgrew Miller Hall of Fame, if you will). We are proud of those who have graced our front page, lamented those legends who have since passed and occasionally even fêted 6 by Laurel Gross someone long deceased who deserved another moment in the spotlight. Artist Feature: Microscopic Septet But as our issue count grows and seminal players are fewer and fewer, we must expand our notion of significance. Part of that, not only in the jazz world, has by Ken Dryden 7 been controversy, those players or groups that make people question their strict On The Cover: The Bad Plus rules about what is or what is not whatever. Who better to foment that kind of 9 by Martin Longley discussion than this month’s On The Cover, The Bad Plus, only the third time in our history that we have featured a group. This tradition-upending trio is at Encore: Lest We Forget: Village Vanguard from the end of December into the first days of January. 10 Bill Smith Johnny Griffin Another band that has pushed the boundaries of jazz, first during the ‘80s but now with an acclaimed reunion, is the Microscopic Septet (Artist Feature).

  • To Whom It May Concern: I Am Happy to Recommend Matte Henderson to You
"To Whom It May Concern: I am happy to recommend Matte Henderson to you. He is hard working, committed and has integrity." -- Robert Fripp That quote from a recommendation letter from the King Crimson founder kicked off what has been an extraordinary 28-year career for guitarist, composer, high end guitar designer and raconteur Matte Henderson. The former Fripp student has recorded or performed with an incredible diversity of artists including John Medeski, Mick Karn, David Torn, Bill Dixon, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Trey Gunn, Henry Kaiser, Rodney Holmes, Screaming Headless Torsos, and Natalie Merchant. Henderson is also intriguing for the bands he chose not to be a part of, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Brand X. But those are stories for another time, and of course, interviews, should this pique your curiosity, dear media type. Rather, we are gathered here today to celebrate the release of Henderson's first album, The Veneer of Logic, a collaborative effort with drummer Marco Minnemann, known for his work with Joe Satriani and Steven Wilson. Bad Brains co-founder/guitarist Doctor Know calls the album the world's first "muttcore" release, meaning it explores the universes of post-rock, industrial, metal, and ambient with equal aplomb. Now, we assure you Henderson is an upstanding citizen, but we must inform you that while this is mostly an instrumental record, there are vocals. And those vocals were almost entirely derived from voicemails, surreptitiously recorded conversations, and prison parole hearings. When was the last time you heard a record with prison parole hearings? Right.

In saxophonist/composer Jason Robinson’s polydirectional masterpiece Tiresian Symmetry, he doesn’t seek to tell the soothsayer’s story. Rather for his seventh album as a leader, he’s gathered an extraordinary cast of improvisers to investigate the nature of narrative itself in a jazz context. The music’s richly suggestive harmonic and metrical relationships elicit a wide array of responses, but ultimately listeners find their own sense of order and meaning amidst the sumptuous sounds. For Robinson, a capaciously inventive artist who has flourished in a boggling array of settings, from solo excursions with electronics and free jazz quartets to roots reggae ensembles and multimedia collectives, Tiresian Symmetry represents his most expansive project yet. “I was attracted to the myth of the soothsayer, who tells the future even when it’s not welcome information,” Robinson says. “But on a more technical level I was intrigued by the numerical relationships.

  • Danh Vō and Xiu Xiu: “Metal” September 27–October 18, 2014
Danh Vō and Xiu Xiu: “Metal” September 27–October 18, 2014 The Kitchen is pleased to present “Danh Vō and Xiu Xiu: Metal,” on view through October 18. The exhibition is curated by Tim Griffin with Lumi Tan. Having previously remarked that “the passport is the ultimate performance piece”—citing Felix Gonzalez Torres’s understanding of how movement and, by extension, cultural perspective, takes place in a legislated sphere— Vō has invited two Bangkok, Thailand-based gold pounders, Nantapol and Pruan Panicharam, to be present in the gallery while producing the gold leaf that often adorns his sculptures, from cardboard cartons featuring brand names from Budweiser to Colgate. This father-and-son team’s process of flattening 24-carat squares of gold into leaf takes three hours to execute; they will be working in the gallery daily from noon to 3pm, Tuesday through Saturday. In tandem with this duo, the band Xiu Xiu—featuring composer and musician Jamie Stewart with bandmates Shayna Dunkelman and Ches Smith—will present 52 musical compositions, with a daily selection timed cumulatively to match the duration of the gold pounders’ labor. These pieces derive from a variety of compositional techniques, with some made in the vein of new music and entirely notated, while others are either improvised in the mode of post-1950s free jazz or modeled after game structures in which the musicians follow specific sets of rules. As important as the overall duration of these works is the fact that each individual piece is five minutes long; endings are marked by loud sound—what Stewart calls an alarm—indicating transitions from one piece to the next.

The guitarist, composer and loops magician is a quiet but ubiquitous force on stages around his hometown. With fearsome chops and a keen ear for odd beauty, Pirog has helped expand the possibilities of jazz, rock and experimentalism in a city formerly known for its straight-ahead tradition. Pirog performs regularly in a broad spectrum of venues (and musical contexts) across DC – jazz and rock clubs, the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, art galleries and museums, the annual Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music, and much more. DC has a rich legacy of brilliant guitarists and gifted composers – Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan, John Fahey, and Duke Ellington come to mind for key roles they played in the city’s 20th Century musical past. In the cutting-edge cultural and technological mecca that is the new, 21st Century Washington, Anthony Pirog is DC’s leading guitarist/composer and fast rising star. Palo Colorado Dream—recorded with the all-star trio of Michael Formanek on bass and Ches Smith on drums—is Pirog’s Cuneiform Records debut as a bandleader, and it marks the young innovator’s entrance onto the national stage.

An album as cosmically evocative as its title, The Celestial Squid marks both a promising new partnership and a return to the outer-limits sensibility that informed Russell's earliest work. With sixteen albums as a leader and more than countless session performances to his credit, including the early James Bond film scores, Russell is returning to his bone-rattling, noise-rocking roots for the first time since 1971. You'll be shaken and stirred as Kaiser, Russell, and eight super friends deliver a no-holds-barred, free-range sonic cage match. They evoke improvised music's past, present, and future while proving that free jazz can still be good, clean, liberating fun. Russell created some of the early '70s' most outrageously outside music. Live at the ICA: June 11th 1971 is a particularly hallmark work of guitar shock-and-awe. Russell's "stabbing, singing notes and psychotic runs up the fretboard have nothing to do with scalular architecture," wrote All Music's Thom Jurek, "but rather with viscera and tonal exploration." Russell anticipated the wildest and most intrepid vibrations of Terje Rypdal, Dave Fuzinski, Sonic Youth, Keiji Haino, Tisziji Muñoz, Alan Licht (who contributes liner notes), and their boundary-dissolving ilk.
