News Release For immediate release 27 August, 2012 Contact Frank Lambrick 303-638-9520 Creative Music Works and KGNU present Innovative guitarist David Torn makes his first Colorado appearance Multi-faceted guitarist/composer brings his band Sun of Goldfinger, featuring saxophonist Tim Berne and drummer Ches Smith, to Denver for the first time. Denver - David Torn is an influential guitarist and widely regarded composer of music for film, whose recording career began on the ECM label in 1982. He has recorded with musicians as diverse as Bill Bruford, Jan Garbarek and Laurie Anderson, studied music with the likes of John Abercrombie and Leonard Bernstein, and has won a Grammy award and 2 Reader's Poll Awards from Guitar Player magazine. David Torn has recorded in a multitude of styles since his first recordings, from rock/fusion to jazz and ambient electronic, and says this about his current project: "I have come to understand that what my personality needs is to not worry about idiom or pigeonholes or labels—to really, really not worry about it and just try to pursue a voice." In recent years, that voice has become widely known for its film soundtrack compositions, having contributed to films like The Order, Friday Night Lights, and Lars and the Real Girl. David Torn's current band, Sun of Goldfinger, features saxophonist Tim Berne and drummer Ches Smith. They will perform on Saturday, 15 September at 8 pm at The Walnut Room, 3131 Walnut St. in Denver. Tickets are $25, $19 for Creative Music Works members and students. Tim Berne has appeared on over 40 recordings in his 30+ years as a leading edge musician, and is highly regarded as a solo artist as well as a collaborator with artists like Bill Frisell, John Zorn, and Nels Cline. Ches Smith, who has played with artists as diverse as Marc Ribot and alternative rock bands Xiu Xiu and Secret Chiefs 3, completes Sun of Goldfingers' powerhouse lineup.
