Food Relief Report THE CURRENT SCENARIO Persons facing moderate to severe food insecurity has increased exponentially over the last year India was home to the largest number of undernourished people in the world even before the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, released jointly by five UN organisations in July, reveals that the pandemic and failure on the part of state to combat its effects, has led to a significant increase in the prevalence of hunger and food insecurity in the country. According to the data presented in the report, the prevalence of moderate to severe food insecurity in India rose by about 6.8 per cent in 2018-20. A SNAPSHOT OF FOOD RELIEF EFFORTS In March 2020, The Akshaya Patra Foundation turned all its resources to offering Food Relief across the country. The Foundation served at-risk communities with Wholesale (Cooked) Meals and Grocery Kits, expanding food relief in August to support our Mid-Day Meal beneficiaries with Happiness Kits. This year, Akshaya Patra has expanded Relief Efforts, and is constantly adapting its service offerings to meet the need of the day. Current programmes include: Wholesale Meals Packaged Meals Packaged Meals + Incentivized Water Vaccine Drives Dry Grocery Kit Happiness Kit Family Raksha Kit Shakti Kit Happiness Kit Over the past 14 months, Relief Efforts have extended to Flood Relief in Bihar and Assam, and distribution of grocery kits to pregnant and lactating mothers, and young children in Anganwadi Centres. CAPSULE PROGRAMMES TO MEET THE CURRENT NEED Distributing Medical Kits to Communities in Need American Tower Corporation, (ATC) a staunch partner through Akshaya Patra’s Food Relief Efforts, came forward in April 2021 with a plan to support socio-economically disadvantaged communities with medical kits. Every medical kit contains a pulse oximeter and a digital thermometer. Between August 12 – 28, ATC and Akshaya Patra have scheduled 80 distribution drives across 21 locations, in both, the North and South of the country. These drives will be conducted with the on-ground aid of ATC employee volunteers. 9,272 medical kits will be distributed through this initiative. Newsletter Vol. Issue 2 Akshaya Patra Feature The hearth of Akshaya Patra - its kitchens 5 Innovations Extra nutritious sambhar 11 Nearing the one million mark Akshaya Patra sets foot in Gujarat 7 New Kitchens Nayagarh District, Orissa 11 Mathura District, Uttar Pradesh 12 Interview Alexius Collette, CEO, Philips India 16 Dear Friend of Akshaya Patra, A scurry of activity is ubiquitous in all the 14 Akshaya Patra centers. In the last few months we have surged ahead towards our set target of feeding a million children by 2010. We now secure wholesome, nutritious and hygienically cooked school meals for over 8,00,000 children in more than 4,500 schools every day. This reminds me of something Gandhiji said, “I have faith, therefore, that if, in spite of our shortcomings, the big thing does happen, it will be because God wanted to help us.” Of course, the target of one million is only to help us push forward our goal of reaching out to more and more hungry children and not to take pride in it. One million is just the tip of the iceberg of the issue of hunger in children. It’s heartening and humbling to share with you a few milestones that we have achieved over the last few months. We set foot in the state of Gujarat and are currently feeding 65,000 children in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. We started decentralized Akshaya Patra programs this academic year in two new locations. One, in Bhapur, Nayagarh district in Orissa and the other in Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh.

Why should you associate with The Akshaya Patra Foundation? According to statistics, 43 per cent of the country’s children are malnourished and 1.5 million children are at a risk of becoming malnourished because of rising global prices. On the education front, as of 2010, there were 1.7 million out-of-school children. For India to become an economic power to reckon with, it is essential that varied stakeholders such as Government, Corporates and individuals come together to solve two of the critical Millennium Development Goals – MDG 1 focusing on poverty and hunger and MDG 2 aiming to achieve universal education. Against the above scenario, The Akshaya Patra Foundation’s work is extremely relevant – with vision that “No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger,” the mission is to end classroom hunger amidst government school children by providing mid-day meals; thus providing a strong incentive for children to stay in school and learn as much as possible. This has been derived out of the understanding that education holds the key to progress and is the single-most opportunity to enable children exit poverty. It’s home-grown, non-patented innovative technology coupled with sustained local fundraising and strong partnerships has enabled it to scale up from 1500 children in 2000 to 1.39 million children studying in 10,631 schools across 10 states and 23 locations, making it one of the world’s largest NGO-managed mid- day meal programme. Page | 1 What is Companies Act 2013? The Companies Act 2013 has taken a bold step to introduce the culture of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) amidst Indian corporates by giving a minimum expenditure towards social activities.

9-608-038 DECEMBER 17, 2007 DAVID UPTON CHRISTINE ELLIS SARAH LUCAS AMY YAMNER Akshaya Patra: Feeding India's Schoolchildren “The big thing to worry about now is scalability. How to run such a huge operation on a consistent basis with worries about quality and consistency of food… We’ve gone from 60,000 to over 500,000 children. Now we want to get to one million. How do we do that?” --Raj Kondur (MBA ’97), Akshaya Patra Board of Trustees, and CEO, Nirvana Business Solutions Bangalore, India: CC Das, Program Director of the Akshaya Patra Foundation, felt the heat and humidity from the kitchen. CC Das breathed in the warm and fragrant aromas and was reminded that, while six years ago this operation was just an idea, the kitchen now fed 145,000 schoolchildren each day. He mulled over how Akshaya Patra could continue to construct new kitchens and grow in other regions. Baran Village, India: Over 1,000 miles away, in the rural Baran district of Rajasthan, Trilok Gautham, Executive Supervisor of the Baran program, had just arrived at his first stop of the day. He stood in the simple room that served as a kitchen for a village school.
