Akshaya Patra Kitchens Work Overtime for Flood Victims Distribute 85,000 Food Packets in Three Days Among Flood Hit Districts of Karnataka & AP Press Release Akshaya Patra Kitchens Work Overtime for Flood Victims Distribute 85,000 food packets in three days among flood hit districts of Karnataka & AP Bangalore, October 07, 2009: The Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world’s largest NGO-run school meal program, supported Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh Governments by supplying food packets in the flood-hit districts of the two states. Akshaya Patra Foundation distributed 85,000 food packets in Bellary, Bagalkot, Bijapur and Dharwad districts of Karnataka and Mantralayam district of Andhra Pradesh from Oct 2 and continue to do so till the situations are under control. The states witnessed heavy downpour since September 29, 2009, which brought normal life to a standstill and rendered thousands of people homeless. At this timely hour, Akshaya Patra’s intelligently engineered and highly efficient kitchens at our two centers in Bellary and Hubli got in to overdrive mode and prepared food and got it distributed in flood-hit areas within 12 hours. Food was sent in Akshaya Patra distribution vehicles and were distributed till 11 pm in the night. The foundation distributed puliogre, lemon rice in the morning and rice, sambar and curd in the evening, where there was good road connectivity. However for areas cut off from the road food packets containing puliogre and biscuit packets were loaded in three Indian Airforce helicopters at the Jindal airport and distributed among the flood victims. Sri. Chanchalpati Dasa, Vice Chairman, Akshay Patra Foundation said, “The Akshaya Patra Foundation stands by the nation and the two state governments in this hour of natural calamity, it is our social responsibility to help our fellow beings in the time of need and distress. We shall try in every possible way to help those who are starving and rendered homeless.” About Akshay Patra Foundation The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a non-profit, secular trust, evolved the school meal program in in the year 2000. It started as a pilot project in five schools in Bangalore, feeding 1,500 children and has now grown into a mammoth endeavor covering over one million children daily in about 5,700 government, government-aided schools and anganwadis (day care centers) in 17 locations spread across seven states in India. This is the world’s largest NGO-run school meal program feeding 10,08,518 school children daily. The foundation expects to reach a figure of five million children by 2020. The Bangalore-based Akshaya Patra Foundation commenced serving school meals to students in Government schools of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar from mid-June. The Government of Gujarat and The Akshaya Patra Foundation have signed a MoU to feed children in the Ahmedabad West, Gandhinagar City and Gandhinagar Rural. The enrolled number of students in these schools is 65,000. With the addition of Gujarat schools, Akshaya Patra is now nearer to its goal of feeding one million school children every day by the end of 2010. In the last few months we have surged ahead towards our set target of feeding a million children by 2010. We now secure wholesome, nutritious and hygienically cooked school meals for over 8,00,000 children in more than 4,500 schools every day. This reminds me of something Gandhiji said, “I have faith, therefore, that if, in spite of our shortcomings, the big thing does happen, it will be because God wanted to help us.” Of course, the target of one million is only to help us push forward our goal of reaching out to more and more hungry children and not to take pride in it. One million is just the tip of the iceberg of the issue of hunger in children. It’s heartening and humbling to share with you a few milestones that we have achieved over the last few months. We set foot in the state of Gujarat and are currently feeding 65,000 children in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. We started decentralized Akshaya Patra programs this academic year in two new locations. One, in Bhapur, Nayagarh district in Orissa and the other in Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh.

It is guided by Swami Vivekananda and Gandhian philosophies. The Kendra has over 800 activity centres across India, runs Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalayas catering 45,500 children in tribal areas of Tamilnadu, Maharashtra, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Andaman Islands. The educational philosophy of Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalayas is rooted in the thought of Swami Vivekananda “Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man.” The schools provide an all-round holistic education and have been acknowledged for their substantial contribution in improving the educational scenario in these areas.. The rural development work of Vivekananda Kendra has made a positive impact in these states/UTs. They run over 200 balwadis, health care units and medical camps, youth and women leadership development programs, skill development programs. The Kendra is at the forefront in promoting rural talents, old age homes especially for old women and training Arogyarakshaks for interior areas. The Kendra has been working to reduce the carbon foot prints of buildings by adopting more than 30 green technologies. To promote sustainable agriculture it has adopted innovative technologies like Azolla and bio-formulations like enhanced fish-amino. The Kendra has promoted indigenous Siddha Varma medical system where instead of medicine food becomes the medicine. It has taken lead role in water management through community participation, revival of water harvesting structure and water democracy. More than 30 traditional water bodies in Rameswaram have been revived by the Kendra. In the field of Renewable Energy the Kendra has achieved excellent results.

According to statistics, 43 per cent of the country’s children are malnourished and 1.5 million children are at a risk of becoming malnourished because of rising global prices. On the education front, as of 2010, there were 1.7 million out-of-school children. For India to become an economic power to reckon with, it is essential that varied stakeholders such as Government, Corporates and individuals come together to solve two of the critical Millennium Development Goals – MDG 1 focusing on poverty and hunger and MDG 2 aiming to achieve universal education. Against the above scenario, The Akshaya Patra Foundation’s work is extremely relevant – with vision that “No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger,” the mission is to end classroom hunger amidst government school children by providing mid-day meals; thus providing a strong incentive for children to stay in school and learn as much as possible. This has been derived out of the understanding that education holds the key to progress and is the single-most opportunity to enable children exit poverty.
