  • Talkabout July 2004
Volume 7: No 2 July 2004 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Our Scholarship has taken a new form for this year. There were four applicants and two outstanding students could not be separated in scholastic attainments, practice teaching qualities and personality. What a quandary ! The two candidates : Cheryl Ann Fuller and Kristil-Rae Mobbs are both students in their final year of Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Honours) studies. Our available finances for this year amounted to $4,000, so, after a discussion with the interview panel and members of the Committee, it was decided to award a Scholarship of $2,000 to each of these candidates. We are confident that these students will be worthy recipients of our Scholarships. Cheryl Fuller Kristil Mobbs It should give a warm glow to all the generous donors to our Scholarship Fund to know that they have made possible such encouragement to our future teachers. School-Link Overview Questions are often asked as to why young people may be disengaging from education. One potential answer is related to poor mental health, a significant barrier for young people meaningfully engaging in education1. To help address this, a local steering committee comprised of education providers, mental health professionals and a variety of community and youth service representatives, implemented the Youth Mental Health Forum (YMHF). The YMHF approach has been implemented in multiple locations across the Riverina over the last 5 years.

Introduction Southern Irrigation SOILpak aims to provide a range of best soil management practices to optimise crop and pasture yields. Soils used for irrigation in southern NSW are varied, and this manual identifies five main soil groups. Crop enterprises are also varied. The major irrigated farming systems considered in this manual are (a) rice/rice rotations, (b) summer cropping (excluding rice), (c) winter cropping, and (d) pastures. SOILpak concentrates on the skills needed to: • assess the condition of the soil with emphasis on the cultivation layer (0–10 cm) and the soil profile (0–100 cm) • understand the management options for maintaining or improving soil condition for a particular crop or pasture system. SOILpak does not aim to make the final decision for irrigators. Instead it provides soil management options which can assist irrigators to develop successful soil management strategies.
