King of the Indies: Symbolic Capital and the Colonisation of Independent Videogame Development Brendon Szucs Swinburne University of Technology John St Hawthorne VIC 3122 [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper explores the migration of developers between industrial and independent fields of videogames production, and their use of symbolic capital to facilitate this transition. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory as its principle theoretical framework, it presents a case study of Double Fine Productions and Tim Schafer, and the diverse roles they play within the field on independent production. This paper will argue that through the use of symbolic capital, these agents are able to secure dominant positions within the field, and represent a growing colonisation of independent development by the wider industrial, heteronomous field of production. Keywords Symbolic Capital, Field Theory, Colonisation, Pierre Bourdieu, Double Fine, Tim Schafer INTRODUCTION In 2012, videogame developer and Double Fine Productions president, Tim Schafer, launched a public campaign on crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter, to fund the development and distribution of an upcoming adventure game title, Broken Age. Trading heavily on Schafer’s own symbolic capital (Bourdieu 1986) as a known and celebrated veteran in the field of videogames development, the campaign was an unprecedented success for the time, securing over $3.3 million USD in funding for the development of the project. In the years since Broken Age was successfully funded, Double Fine Productions, with Schafer as its most prominent public face, have established a firm foothold within the field of independent videogames development and its surrounding culture. In addition to the successful crowdfunding of two further projects including Massive Chalice (2015) and a sequel to the critically praised Psychonauts (2005), the company has branched out into various key roles in the field. -

Narrative Patterns in Video Games Narrative Mechanics and Its Rules and Rule Sets Beat Suter Storytelling in video games can take very different forms and encompass a varie- ty of values. Whether as a small backstory for the game world, as detailed life stories of individual characters or as the dominant narrative of a complex epic, storytelling always has to interlock with game mechanics and the game world in such a way that the player can easily cope with logical interactions. Since a game is a framework of game rules, storytelling does not have a superordinate role, but acts as a game mechanic and is therefore integrated into a set of rules (Suter/Kocher/Bauer 2018: 31). In a role-playing epic (Final Fantasy series) it can be a principal macro mechanism of the game, in a platformer (Super Mario series) it can be one mechanism among many, often formulaically rendered. And in a puzzle game, it may merely serve as an accessory or a decorative frame (Gunpey 1999, Candy Crush Saga 2012). The most exciting game stories are probably those that, rather than just laying out a narrative, rely more on hints and have to be discovered or playfully and actively worked out by the player (Inside 2016, The Last Guardian 2016). But even in a game with a dominant narrative storytelling is often accompa- nied by a second macro mechanic such as exploration or solving puzzles. These second-tier dominant mechanics then serve as the key to building sets of sup- porting micro mechanics. ConseQuently, the narrative is often used as a targeted game mechanism. -

This semester, I plan to play Psychonauts and then the Sly Cooper series (or as much of it as I can get through). I've wanted to try Psychonauts ever since I first heard about it, whereas I didn't know much about the Sly games until I started researching other games in the platformer genre. My list of possible games originally also included Bioshock, War- and/or Starcraft, Heroes of Might and Magic V, and Jade Empire, but as I talked about the choice with others it became clear that I was the most enthusiastic about Psychonauts and the Sly series. My main goal in selecting games was finding ones that I would enjoy playing. I've generally enjoyed the console platformers I've played, so that genre seemed like a good place to start. A bit of background: I have never owned a video game console; my parents reasoned (quite correctly) that if I had one I would spend all my time playing with it. I was limited, then, to occasionally playing bits and pieces of games on my friends' systems. As a result, I've played through the first quarter to third of a variety of platformers--including Jak and Daxter, the second Ratchet and Clank game, Banjo- Kazooie, and Super Mario Sunshine--but have never actually beaten one. In fact, the biggest difficulty in picking games or series in this genre was in finding ones I'd never tried. As the list of platformers I've played might suggest, I'm naturally drawn toward colorful, cartoonish games with a quirky sense of humor; Psychonauts and the Sly games both seem to fit this description perfectly. -

Now my games open again, and I can download Xbox Game Pass games. -

Starbreeze Publishing signs Double Fine’s highly anticipated Psychonauts 2 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (February 6, 2017) Starbreeze AB, an independent creator, publisher and distributor of high quality entertainment products, has signed a publishing agreement with Double Fine Productions regarding the game Psychonauts 2, to be released in 2018. Starbreeze will invest 8 MUSD to bring the game to PC and other console platforms through digital distribution. Starbreeze will be the major investor in the project, which also has been funded by Double Fine itself, as well as through a successful crowdfunding Fig campaign in which gamers invested directly to take part in potential future profits. Starbreeze will be able to recoup 100% of its full investment including marketing costs with an initial revenue share of 85% after distribution and platform fees and Fig crowdfunding revenue share. Starbreeze share of revenues will become 60% after the investment is recouped. Double Fine will retain 100% of the intellectual property relating to Psychonauts 2. Psychonauts 2 is a third-person action/adventure platformer where players control Razputin Aquato - a newly graduated Psychonaut with powerful psychic abilities - as he delves into the minds of others. The player will use Raz's PSI powers, such as telekinesis, pyrokinesis, and levitation, in combination with Raz's acrobatic platforming skills, to explore the mental worlds of the game's eccentric characters. The story of Psychonauts 2 picks up directly after the events of the first game, and the VR adventure Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, but players will not need to have played those games to follow the events of Psychonauts 2.
