HYMN 82 “Songs of Thankfulness and Praise”

Stand M: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: (spoken) Amen.

C: (♪) Baptized into your name most holy, (Hymn 294) O Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, I claim a place, though weak and lowly,

Among your saints, your chosen host, Buried with and dead to sin. Your Spirit now shall live within.

M: I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. C: Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit (John 3:5,6).

M: Surely we were sinful at birth, sinful from the time our mothers conceived us (Psalm 51:5). C: But we were washed, we were sanctified, we were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God (1 Corinthians 6:11).

C: (♪) My loving Father, there you took me To be henceforth your child and heir. My faithful Savior, there you let me The fruit of all your sorrows share. O Holy Spirit, comfort me When threat’ning clouds around I see.

M: As baptized children of God, we confess our sins. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sin- ful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sin- ner.

C: (♪) My faithful God, you fail me never; Your promise surely will endure. Oh, cast me not away forever If words and deeds become impure. Have mercy when I come defiled; Forgive, lift up, restore your child. 2 M: Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless (Ephesians 5:25–27). Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

C: (♪) All that I am and love most dearly— Receive it all, O Lord, from me. Let me confess my faith sincerely And help me your own child to be! Let nothing that I am or own Serve any will but yours alone.

(all rise) Glory to God for endless ages And peace on earth, good will to those On whom his favor rests! Sin’s wages Are death, But Jesus died and rose. Put in his grave, we, with him, rise And share his seat above the skies.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray. Father in heaven, at Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan River you pro- claimed him your beloved Son and anointed him who would go and die for us with the Holy Spirit and power. Keep all who are baptized into Christ rejoicing that we are your children. Let us never stray from you, but let us inherit eternal life; through Je- sus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Ho- ly Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: ♪ Amen.

FIRST LESSON Genesis 2:4–17 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the Lord God made the earth and the heav-

3 ens — 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground — 7 the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground — trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of As- shur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

PSALM 2 Please turn to page 65 in the front of the hymnal. Pastor sings the first half of the verses. All sing the second half of each verse, the refrains and “Glory be to the Father . . .”

SECOND LESSON Titus 3:4–8a When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. 4 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be care- ful to devote themselves to doing what is good.

VERSE OF THE DAY Refrain (first by pastor, then by all)

M: “The heavens were opened and the voice of the Father thun- dered, ‘You are my beloved Son, with whom I am well- pleased’” (Mark 1:7–11). All sing refrain.

6 Stand APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suf- fered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was bur- ied. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrec- tion of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

INDUCTION OF NEW LEADERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER M: Lord Jesus, lead these your servants to discharge their duties with diligence, boldness and wisdom. Teach them to pray. Make them hungry to hear your word, and help them be good examples for others. Grant that by their service the unity of this congregation may be strengthened, your gospel may spread, and your praise may abound. To that end we are bold to pray for them in particular, for Joe and Annie Gumm as they deliber- ate calls to serve at Trinity Lutheran in Brillion, Wis- consin, for our whole congregation, including all those in any need among us, and for Tim Walz, our state’s new governor, just as you have taught us:

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. 7 Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. (All are seated.)

HYMN “From Wilderness to Jordan Came” (to the tune of Hymn 16) 1. From wilderness to Jordan came The final prophet to proclaim That judgment soon was to begin To punish mankind for its sin. 2. Although of Abraham’s descent, Since all have sinned all must repent And, like the Gentiles, undergo Baptizing, and their sorrow show.

3. But when Christ came, no judgment dire Did he pronounce with venging fire; Himself baptizing underwent, The sinless One, subservient.

4. On him the Spirit as a dove Descended, and the Father’s love Voiced his approval that the One Baptized was his beloved Son.

5. All who believe and are baptized Are likewise by the Father prized. The Spirit rests upon us, too, Impelling us God’s work to do.

6. All glory, Lord, to you we pay For your Epiphany today, And to the Father praise we bring, 8 As by the Spirit here we sing. Stand M: Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: ♪ Amen.

M: Brothers and sisters, go in peace. {…} and give you peace. C: ♪ Amen. Amen. Amen.

9 MR. AND MRS. GUMM RECEIVE DIVINE CALLS

Over the weekend our principal, Mr. Joe Gumm, and his wife, Mrs. Annie Gumm, received Divine Calls from Trinity Luther- an Church and School in Brillion, WI to serve as principal (Joe) and 7th-8th grade teacher (Annie). They ask for your prayers and feedback as they consider both opportunities they have to serve the Lord. Here is a letter they prepared:

"Dear fellow redeemed of Trinity in Nicollet:

This letter is to inform you that we have recently received calls to serve as principal (Joe) and to teach 7th and 8th grades (Annie) at Trinity Lutheran Church and School in Bril- lion, WI. As we are in the process of deliberating the two calls we now hold, the call to Trinity, Brillion, and our current call here to Trinity, Nicollet, we are asking you to please join us in praying that the Lord would guide us as we search out His will in where He would have us best serve. Whichever deci- sion the Lord leads us to make, we are confident He will con- tinue to bless the ministry of both congregations.

We invite all of you to please give your insights and, again, your prayers. God's continued blessings to you all.

Sincerely, Joe and Annie Gumm

Do you have any questions about the call process in our syn- od? Pastor Witte or the Gumms, congregation president Gary Hulke or any of our elders (Larry Bruegger, Dean Compart, Allen Enter, Marvin Krohn, Scott Rudenick and John Sieberg) would be happy to answer your questions. We will also have an opportunity at our January 27 (7:00 p.m.) voters’ meeting to discuss the call.

10 Our Weekly Catechism Review Page The picture below teaches us two precious truths about God’s second commandment. (“Honor your father and mother, that is may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”) In the picture Jesus is working in his adoptive father Joseph’s shop. Jesus is helping his father help others. This was Jesus keeping God’s commandment in our place. Why? We have broken God’s command to honor those above us. We have not obeyed parents, employers, pastors, government officials and others God put over us— not the way God wants. We have not given them full love and respect. But Jesus did so, in our place. By his holy life in our place, he makes us look like saints in God’s holy sight. And Jesus died for all our sins against all God’s commands. So in thanks to God, we want to serve and honor those whom God has placed over us, like Jesus served Joseph. God promises that this will lead to great blessing from him.
