The ge- nus Thinobius Kiesenwetter is new for Portugal and Hesperus Fauvel is recorded for the first time from the Iberian Peninsula. The distribution of Quedius cobosi Coiffait, an Iberian endemic, is now extended to Western Portugal. All specimens were sam- pled in cork oak woodlands, in two different localities – Alcochete and Grândola - using two distinct sampling techniques. By Ulrich Irmler & Stephan Giirlich Summary Although the rove beetle family is one of the most species rich insect families, it is ecologically rarely investigated. Little is known about the influence of environmental demands on the occurrence of the species. Thus, the present investigation aims to relate rove beetle assemblages and species to soil and forest parameters of Schleswig- Holstein (northern Germany). In the southernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein near Geesthacht, 65 sites were investigated by pitfall traps studying the relationship be tween the rove beetle fauna and the following environmental parameters: soil pH, organic matter content, habitat area and canopy cover. In total 265 rove beetle species have been recorded, and of these 69 are listed as endangered in Schleswig-Holstein. Four assemblages could be differentiated, but separation was weak. Wood area and canopy cover were significantly related with the rove beetle composition using a multivariate analysis. In particular, two assemblages of loosely wooded sites, or heath-like vegetation, were significantly differentiated from the densely forested assemblages by canopy cover and Corg-content of soil. Spearman analysis revealed significant results for only 30 species out of 80. -

Mature larvae of three species: Q. (Microsaurus) brevis, Q. (M.) cruentus, and Q. (M.) microps are newly described. The hitherto poorly known larvae of five species: Q. (Raphirus) boops, Q. (Distichalius) cinctus, Q. (s. str.) fuliginosus, Q. (s. str.) molochinus and Q. (M.) mesomelinus, are redescribed. Illustrations of structural features are provided. The combination of characters that allow for distinguishing the known mature larvae of Quedius from closely related genera within the subtribe Quediina is specified. Diagnostic larval morphological characters for each of the sub- genera are proposed. The analysis of morphological features within the genus Quedius, with the application of the Multi- Variate Statistic Package (MVSP), showed high distinctiveness of the subgenus Quedius and low coherence among spe- cies within the subgenus Microsaurus. The cave-associated invertebrates of Nova Scotia constitute a fauna at a very early stage of post-glacial recolonization. The Coleoptera are characterized by low species diversity. A staphylinid Quedius spelaeus spelaeus, a predator, is the only regularly encountered beetle. Ten other terrestrial species registered from cave environments in the province are collected infrequently. They include three other rove-beetles: Brathinus nitidus, Gennadota canadensis and Atheta annexa. The latter two together with Catops gratiosus (Leiodidae) constitute a small group of cave-associated beetles found in decompositional situations. Quedius s. spelaeus and a small suite of other guanophiles live in accumulations of porcupine dung: Agolinus leopardus (Scarabaeidae), Corticaria serrata (Latrididae), and Acrotrichis castanea (Ptilidae). Two adventive weevils Otiorhynchus ligneus and Barypeithes pellucidus (Curculionidae) collected in shallow cave passages are seasonal transients; Dermestes lardarius (Dermestidae), recorded from one cave, was probably an accidental (stray). Five of the terrestrial beetles are adventive Palaearctic species. Aquatic beetles are collected infrequently. Four taxa have been recorded: Agabus larsoni (Dytiscidae) may be habitual in regional caves; another Agabus sp. (probably semivittatus), Dytiscus sp. (Dytiscidae), and Crenitis digesta (Hydrophilidae) are accidentals. The distribution and ecology of recorded species are discussed, and attention is drawn to the association of beetles found in a Nova Scotia “ice cave”. -

The Food Web in a Subterranean Ecosystem Is Driven by Intraguild
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The food web in a subterranean ecosystem is driven by intraguild predation Andrea Parimuchová1*, Lenka Petráková Dušátková2, Ľubomír Kováč1, Táňa Macháčková3, Ondřej Slabý3 & Stano Pekár2 Trophic interactions of cave arthropods have been understudied. We used molecular methods (NGS) to decipher the food web in the subterranean ecosystem of the Ardovská Cave (Western Carpathians, Slovakia). We collected fve arthropod predators of the species Parasitus loricatus (gamasid mites), Eukoenenia spelaea (palpigrades), Quedius mesomelinus (beetles), and Porrhomma profundum and Centromerus cavernarum (both spiders) and prey belonging to several orders. Various arthropod orders were exploited as prey, and trophic interactions difered among the predators. Linear models were used to compare absolute and relative prey body sizes among the predators. Quedius exploited relatively small prey, while Eukoenenia and Parasitus fed on relatively large prey. Exploitation of eggs or cadavers is discussed. In contrast to previous studies, Eukoenenia was found to be carnivorous. A high proportion of intraguild predation was found in all predators. Intraspecifc consumption (most likely cannibalism) was detected only in mites and beetles. Using Pianka’s index, the highest trophic niche overlaps were found between Porrhomma and Parasitus and between Centromerus and Eukoenenia, while the lowest niche overlap was found between Parasitus and Quedius. Contrary to what we expected, the high availability of Diptera and Isopoda as a potential prey in the studied system was not corroborated. Our work demonstrates that intraguild diet plays an important role in predators occupying subterranean ecosystems. A food web represents a network of food chains by which energy and nutrients are passed from one living organ- ism to another. -
