Section Captain’s Report Asian Pacific Barbarians experience by Pete Dear all, the season is off and running and we McKee have already had some Firstly, this has been one of the highlights of my rugby playing career excellent wins out there on to date, being selected for the Asian Pacific BaaBaa’s and the whole the paddock. experience leading up to the game against the Rest of the World is New and old players something I will never forget. alike seem to have found It was amazing just to rub shoulders in and around the hotel with legends

Antony Phillips, form very early on and of the game, some legends coming to the end of their professional rugby Section Captain some great rugby is being careers and some at the peak of their careers, in preparation for the played across the Section. Rugby World Cup in 2011.

The Captain’s Dinner was, as ever, an A week or so pearlier I had been told I was being selected to play for the A-Pac BaaBaa’s by Hong Kong coach Dai Rees. He made me aware of interesting affair with 140 past and present the players who were coming, the likes of , Sereli players coming together to celebrate the Bobo, Willie Mason, Ben Gollings, Serge Betsen, the Tuilagi Brothers, upcoming season, one or two early casualties Mathieu Basteraud etc… and it really hit home then that this was going to added some extra humour to the evening as be exciting and such an honour. they left the room and then the crowd were entertained by some excellent stories from The week former London Wasp Peter Scrivener and Tom McColl and I booked into the Renaissance Parkview Hotel in Wan former Scottish flying winger Kenny Logan. Chai on the Monday where the team would be staying for the week and To back up the Captain’s Dinner over 120 then went on to meet all the other players in the hotel lobby. Once we members and friends turned up the following introduced ourselves to each other we were escorted up to the restaurant day to The Walton Brunch, our annual for lunch. Tom and myself sat and chatted to AJ Venter, Serge Betsen, Deon Carstens and the Kefu brothers, they were really nice guys and were memorial to remember those friends we lost really interested in Hong Kong and what there was to do in Hong Kong. in the Bali Bombings…and as always it was After lunch David Campese and Epi Tione read out the squads for the an outstanding day. But, yet again the Holy Asian Pacific Barbarians and The Rest of the World. Grail of drinking the Club dry of Champagne was not achieved so we will happily again A-Pac BaaBaa’s Squad: next year!! Coach David Campese This month we have a couple of stories, one Gareth Hardy, Naonori Mizuyama, Tateo Kanai, Simon Raiwalui, Greg from 1st XV squad member Pete McKee on his Rawlinson, Ross Filipo, Henry Tuilagi, Toutai Kefu (Capt), Freddie Tuilagi, involvement in the Asia Pacific Barbarians vs. Pete Mckee, Manny Edmonds, , Steve Kefu, Seru Rabeni, Tom McColl, Vilimoni Delasau, Sereli Bobo, Christian Loamanu, Rupeni The Rest of the World XV game, a very special Caucaunibuca moment for him, and another about how one of our Section Sponsors has created the trip of a Rest of the World Squad lifetime to assist one of our younger players in Coach: Chester Williams his recovery from a very serious injury. Deon Carstens, Michael Holford, Craig Smith, Ethienne Reynecke, AJ Venter, john Carter, Serge Betsen (Capt), Aaron Persico, Epi Tione, Junior Paramore, Sililo Martens, Robbie Shaw, Ben Gollings, Josh Matavesi, Sonny Parker, Kaine Robertson, Lesley Vainikolo, Mathieu Basteraud, Willie Mason, Dan Scarborough, Josh Lewsey

A few minutes after the team lists where read out, sitting at my table 10 Nov 2011 RUGBY

taking it all in, Manny Edmonds introduced himself to me, this was a guy who I had always idolized watching him play in the Super 12’s and for Perpignan in the . He said how excited he was to be playing here in Hong Kong as he had always wanted to play in the Hong Kong 7s but never got the chance. As Manny left me sitting at my table he said to me “I hope you’re fit, because I’m a rubbish 9 and you’re the only halfback we have”. If I wasn’t nervous enough already about being amongst these huge superstars, the fact that I would be starting on the same pitch as them got the butterflies going big time and I almost brought my lunch back up. Our first training session was the next morning down at HKFC at 11am in the scorching sun. The boys who had traveled from Europe didn’t cope too well with the heat during the session, so the training session didn’t get beyond a canter and only lasted 40mins. But in this short period of time I got the first taste of being involved with these world class talented rugby athletes (other than of course Tom Bolland and Horse Nolan). The skill levels, spatial awareness and sheer athleticism of the other guys was extraordinary. After this training session we were given free time so a few of the boys went to the hotel gym and the pool to relax through the afternoon. Word of warning, don’t ever go to the gym with the Tuilagi brothers!!! Then that evening Tom and I took everyone out for a few milkshakes which was awesome as the boys really let their hair down and we got to know each other a lot more and it acted as a great catalyst for everyone to become good mates. The next day we woke to some very tired bodies, and proof that these great superstars could fall into Hong Kong life just like we have, there were a few guys who hadn’t been to bed and had decided to go straight to the breakfast buffet from Wan Chai, not naming names. That afternoon we had a short training session again at the HKFC were we separated into our squads for the first time. The pace of the session had clicked up a few gears from the previous day and it was awesome just being there to pick the brains of the guys like Manny Edmonds, Ross Filipo, Rupeni, Seru Rabeni and discuss what would you do there? And why don’t we try this here?. The skill levels were superb as well. As a scrumhalf, the ball was given to me on a plate at pace and I knew I could hit Manny Edmonds anywhere with my delivery and the flow of the backline wouldn’t be disrupted. But the most humbling experience I got was when I looked down the backline, whilst we were doing some backline moves, and saw Manny Edmonds, Steve Kefu, Seru Rabeni, Sereli Bobo, Rupeni Caucaunibuca and Vilimoni Delasau. It really struck home how lucky I was to be there and what an honour it was to be playing in this game. In addition to that I would be playing with these guys to raise money for such a worthy cause and in front of my family and friends on my home pitch. The next day was a HKFC Mini Rugby clinic. Everyone really enjoyed it and it made for a few laughs. After this we had a few media duties but besides that we chilled out round the hotel and went to lunch with Etienne, AJ, Deon, Lesley, Tom, Robbie, Kaine and Aaron. Then came game day. David Campese was a very lenient coach and gave us the freedom to prepare how we each normally prepare for a game. The game kickoff was at 3:15pm so most of the boys got down for breakkie round 9am. Serge Betsen and Ben Gollings had already been to the hotel gym by then and had breakfast.

Club Magazine Nov 2011 11 RUGBY

Serge said that because they’re getting old sets of forwards started to slow down a bit and rolling mauls came more into it and the now, their bodies are like those old wind- competitive edge of each player start to come to the fore as well. The physical intensity up cars, they take about 12 hours to get round the breakdowns started to increase, which was good because it started to feel more warmed up, but once they are warmed up like a real game rather than a exhibition match. Because the game started so fast and the they can go all day but at a slow pace. After heat was insane the big boys of the A-Pac BaaBaa’s slowed down and the likes of Josh breakfast each of the teams went their own Lewsey, Ben Gollings and Aaron Persico started to take control and the ROW took the way and the atmosphere changed. It all lead for the first time in the game in the last 2-3 minutes and they ended up winning by became slightly more serious. 5 points. The game was such a great experience and a great way to finish the season. I hope I can be involved in another A-Pac BaaBaa’s game in the future but if not I will The game started with a minute’s silence never forget the awesome week. for the victims of the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami, which was an emotional Big Thanks to Chartis, Canterbury, Renaissance Harbour View Hotel, HKFC and Epi moment, I was feeling extremely sad but Tione. at the same time buzzing with excitement. Cheers, Pete Mckee After this the pre-game haka lead by Freddie Tuilagi, which was suppose to encompass all the countries represented in the A-Pac team was unleashed for the first time. We had practiced it for the first time about 20 minutes before kickoff in the Changing Rooms hence the reason I DHL Delivers didn’t have a clue what was going on. The Haka was more for the occasion and for the crowd to have a laugh over. We then Adam Prentice to the split ready for the kickoff and the nerves really kicked in, all I kept saying to myself Rugby World Cup “Don’t mess up Pete, Don’t mess up”. Lucky enough my first pass went straight to Manny without any problems and I settled down into it. What I didn’t get used to was the pace of the game. The game was 10 times faster than the Japanese test match I played in for Hong Kong in this years A5N. I also found trying to support the A-Pac back 3 of Alesana Tuilagi, Sereli Bobo and Vilimoni Delasau when they broke the gain-line was nigh impossible. They were just too fast and elusive so most of the game I started running behind the defensive line as soon as I had passed the ball. The highlight of the half for me was being able to tackle ex Rugby League Legend Willie Mason a few times and not throwing any wayward passes. Ohhh… and also making the right decision to not join the tackle of Seru Rabeni on Lesley Vainikolo!!! At halftime in the sheds I was really blowing, it felt like I had played 80 minutes not 40. David Campese gave me some advice and Toutai Kefu gave some areas n 10th March this year, 15 Adam was transferred to the trauma unit we need to concentrate on as a team but year old junior rugby and at Pamela Youde and the doctors were besides from that it was just to go out and soccer player at the Club, not hopeful, but MRI and CAT scans have some more fun and play the BaaBaa’s Adam Prentice, was badly then showed that the spine had moved way of free-flowing, expressive rugby. The Rugby Section has been aware of Adam’s plight since the accident and we felt it was time to step up and see if we could get Adam to New Zealand to see his favourite team and also to see his grand mother who has been fretting about his injury. The first step in the process was the Section agreeing to get Adam there. Step two was approaching DHL. Message from the Chairman Match Reports

Happy Halloween and Thanksgiving ! As I write this, the All Blacks have just demolished Australia to make it through to the finals of the Rugby World Cup and I can’t help thinking that it was some sort of comfort after NZ’s loss to Aussie in the final of the Netball World Champs, so fingers Karin Looram, Netball DSA crossed in the final! Chairperson Teams are going well so far but it’s been a slow start for some in the league, with the 1st division not playing their games until the end of October. Club managed a friendly with Panthers but everyone was eager to get going after such a false start. The DSA would like to give a big welcome to new coach, Pam Ryan. Pam brings extensive netball coaching experience from her time in Australia, including school and State level coaching. Monday 3rd October Hurricanes 8 vs Fielders 14 Other coaches this year are Karin Looram, Jessica McCauley and Elise Davy. Karin is the sole coach of Finally, it was time, Hurricanes first match of the season. We had Whirlies and Jessica and Elise are coaching Tornadoes quite a few nervous players at the beginning of the night but that and Hurricanes collectively. didn’t last long once we got on court. Developments in international netball sees NZ coach We started strong, the adrenaline started pumping and Brenda Ruth Aiken, stepping down for personal reasons and is stopped talking for the next hour, well almost! We were only replaced by Wai Taumaunu, who played netball for NZ slightly down by the end of the first quarter, we needed to slow for over 10 years. down, land well and direct our passes a little better and stronger. Karina played an absolute blinder in WD for the whole game, After great success at the World Netball Champs earlier making some great intercepts, getting my ‘man’ of the match this year, Australian coach, Norma Plummer also stepped vote and Lucy was a formidable GD, with Yvonne our trusty down and is replaced by Lisa Alexander. Tornadoes 13 vs Kangeroos 26 Well done ladies, we got through our first game! We started off the game pretty well, finishing our first quarter just 1 goal behind (3-4). Our shooters were nervous but to be honest, I think we were ALL pretty nervous. There were some smooth transitions down to our circle as our GD/GK (Kayleigh/Michelle) sprung up for the rebounds. Ange played WA (not her usual position), but did a great job with her intercepting as well as her attacking. Feeding into the circle between Ange and I worked very well. Our two new shooters were calm and managed to scored an extra 4 goals for us. Unfortunately, we ended the 2nd quarter down by 4 goals (8-12). Michelle, Kayleigh and Marie covered the defence well and managed to get the ball down the court. There were some sloppy passes, but with some great coaching from Jess, our passes became more accurate and flowed smoothly down to our goal circle. Our shooters Jodie and Cheryl scored 4 more goals making our score 12-20 to the opposite team by the end of the 3rd quarter. Without any fresh legs to go on, we were getting more and more tired in the final quarter. We only managed to score 1 goal giving us the final score of 13-26 to the other team. We all enjoyed our first game and with more training and games being played, I’m sure Tornadoes will do well in the first half of the season. We have a strong team and we rock! Dawn Cheng

Monday 10th October Whirlies 23 vs Cougars 19 So, on to game two. Encouraged by last week’s promising start Whirlies faced another Valley team - Cougars. Despite having tonsillitis, Charlotte Thompson was a welcome sight, back from her NZ trip and ready to shoot. Also happy to be back (although possibly her stomach bug wasn’t) was Heather McKay. We also had some excellent cheerleaders in Caroline Freeman’s Mum and Dad and Lynette Ryan who was also poorly! We started off strongly, although somehow we played better after the late-arriving Valley WD came on court, finishing the first quarter 7-4. A great partnership in defence, with Sue Yip and Heather working well together to get almost every rebound and picking off a lot of interceptions (much to the consternation of Valley’s very nippy shooters). The second quarter was the toughest, with a very physical Valley team competing for every loose ball. Whirlies moved the ball really well up the court, utilizing the defence who were always there for support, and giving Kathryn Curley more time to slot in some perfect passes to Charlotte and Fran Hurley, who despite never having played together before were in the right place at the right time. We went into the third, and our strongest quarter 11-7 up. Again, lots of physical play but we stood up to the test well and started to pull away to finish the quarter 19-12. In the final quarter though, our fitness was really tested as the Valley girls started to sink more of their shots. Lyric Clarke was the fresh set of legs (and lungs!) we needed! The final score was 23-19. A really good match against a strong side. Well done Whirlwinds. No illnesses next week and we’ll be unstoppable!
