Sir Stanley Matthews Auction Sir Stanley Matthews Auction Stoke City Football Stadium Tuesday 17th October Louis Taylor Fine Art Auctioneers are proud to announce that they will hold a specialist auction of the memorabilia and other effects in the estate of the legendary Sir Stanley Matthews who died earlier this year. The auction will include some very rare collectors items, notably the F.A. Charity A pair of Stanley Matthews football boots. Shield runners up medal awarded to Sir Stan in Estimate £1,000-£2,000. 1953 when playing for Blackpool against Arsenal. This medal is expected to realise between £1,500-£2,000. A 9ct gold replica medal of Sir Stan’s F.A. Cup medal of 1953 presented to him by Littlewoods Pools is An illumination presented to Stanley expected to realise £5,000-£8,000. Other Matthews in 1946 by the Football Association notable items include a 9ct gold medal to commemorate his having played in forty awarded to Sir Stan by the Football League for four International matches. Estimate £1,500- playing in the England v Scotland match held £2,000.     Introduction: The Stanley Show Stanley Matthews turned matter-of-factly, his stare fixed to avoid eye contact. His expression, washed of emotion, accentuated the slightly sunken, careworn look that made him appear at least as old as his thirty-two years. Time had already gone to work on his hair. It was combed back and still dark but was in the first stages of retreat. In close-up, something seemed to shadow his features, a sadness possibly pleated in the corners of his mouth. No one could have guessed that here was a man at the soaring peak of his powers who had just brought a packed arena to a ferment of excitement. As Matthews turned, gently hitching the elastic of his loose- fitting shorts on to his hips, the sellout crowd of 75,000 at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels had started to applaud. Moments earlier, England’s outside-right had completed a run that even by his standards was exceptional, bewildering Belgium’s defence and electrifying the spectators. And that was not the end of this particular piece by Matthews on a pitch made treacherous by a violent cloudburst soon after kick-off. Having wrought havoc with the ball on the turf, he dipped his head, cocked his right boot and lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper. Last Saturday, the football-mad Najib used Euro 212 as an analogy for BN to “strive like football players to thrash their opponents”. Sir Stanley Matthews, one of England’s finest footballers, once said: “Whenever I see a bald man walk down the street I never think, ‘there’s a man who has done a lot of worrying’, I think, ‘there’s a man who looks like he was a good header of a ball’.” We were wrong to assume that Najib has lost sleep and hair from worrying about the likely outcome of GE13. Najib must have been busy in his backyard, heading balls into the net. Employers also worry that Najib will contract football fever again. In 2010, the Malaysian team won the AFF Suzuki cup against Indonesia. Patriotism cost companies dearly. Absent workers meant that orders for goods were unfulfilled, and those who turned up for work, had to be paid ‘public holiday’ rates. Cynics mocked Najib and wondered if he would declare a month-long holiday should Malaysia win the World Cup. At the opening of the Urban Transformation Centre in Malacca, Najib boasted: “The Euro 2012 tournament probably will not see a record score like what I hope Barisan can achieve in the 13th general election, but I am confident we will emerge with 14-0 with 0 for the opposition.

The first club outside Ulster was Dublin Association Football Club which was formed in 1883. At the time, the Irish Football Association (IFA) was the governing body. Based in Belfast, it found it difficult to promote football throughout the country. This led to the formation of the Leinster Football Association in 1892 as the game became more popular in the area. However, there was always a feeling among clubs from outside the Belfast area that the IFA favoured Ulster based clubs-especially when selecting sides for international matches. Despite this, it was not until after the 1916 Rising and the rise of Nationalism that southern affiliates, such as the Leinster FA, took an aggressive approach in their dealings with the IFA. The clubs often threatened to break away, and in early 1921, Bohemians, St. James's Gate and Shelbourne all withdrew from the Irish League, though all three sides decided to remain involved in Cup competitions.

No. 1 Sir Stanley Matthews & Craven A Cigarettes Football has been my lifelong passion and advertising, my adult-life- long business. So when the esteemed editors of this prestigious organ invited me to write a column, the lengthy, mutually beneficial and often inadvertently hilarious relationship between brands and footballers seemed the perfect subject. In fact the first advertisement I ever wrote (that was actually produced) managed to achieve my only two career ambitions in one fell swoop: to have an ad featuring a Stoke player appear in a newspaper. It was for a Granada TV Rentals’ discounted VHS cassette offer during the 1986 Mexico World Cup. Surprisingly the internet has failed to archive this seminal moment in advertising history. However I can tell you it featured a picture of Gordon Banks’s legendary save from Pele’s header in the 1970 World Cup and a headline that said something like ‘With saves like these you can record saves like these’. No, I know it doesn’t really make sense but that wasn’t my primary motivation as I recall, and the client didn’t seem to notice. To be honest, the subsequent 26 years of my career have been something of an anti-climax.
