METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com) Minister Revd. Steve Bennett At the time of writing, we’re right in the middle of our preparations for our Harvest Festival on Sunday 24th September, which will be followed by a shared lunch. As the days get shorter, the nights draw in and the temperature drops, we’re going to be having hot homemade soups with fresh crusty bread and a cheeseboard to follow. The church is going to be decorated as befits the season and we hope that all who come will enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship and stay on to enjoy the homemade fare afterwards. As we’re preparing for this Autumn festival, Summer seems a long way away. But as promised last month, here are the details of monies raised for charity from our August coffee mornings: MS (a charity which helps those with Multiple Sclerosis) - £105: All We Can (a pioneering international development, relief and advocacy organisation) - £85: RNLI - £125: Weston Hospice - £100. Thank you to all of you for your generosity. Just as Summer seems a long way away, looking ahead, the same could be said about Christmas (although the shops don’t seem to think so as seasonal cards and family sized boxes of confectionery are already filling their shelves). We will be holding our Christmas coffee morning on Saturday 25th November at 10.30am, so please put the date in your diary and come and join us for festive refreshments and a time to catch up with village and church friends. Finishing on a very happy note, our congratulations go to Chris and Gill Poulter who, at the time of writing, will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Chris and Gill have been part of our Methodist church family for many years - and got married in Victoria Methodist Church in Weston. Our love and best wishes go out to them both. Every blessing from all of us here at Brent Knoll Methodist Church. Rosemary Krull Preachers for October at 10.30am 1st October : Rev Margaret Trapp (Holy Communion) 8th October : Link Service @ Methodist Church led by Rev Steve Bennett Please note there will be no service @ Brent Knoll this Sunday 15th October : Mrs Joyce Pipet 22nd October : Mr Chris Luker 29th October : Mrs Janice Barrett Toddlers It was a particularly exciting Summer for two of our toddlers, Monty and Dexter, with the arrival of their gorgeous baby brothers. We send our Congratulations to the Page-Walters family on the arrival of Darwin and to the Barkle family on the arrival of Kaleb and it was lovely to welcome them as new members of the group. We enjoyed seeing Caitlin who popped in on her way to her new school. Caitlin has been a delightful member of Toddlers for many years and she looked so smart in her uniform. Thank you to her Mummy and Granny for the delicious cakes and biscuits that they kindly brought in to share with everyone. We also saw some super pictures of Ava, another of our toddlers, in her uniform as she too has just started school. How grown up they both looked. We would also like to thank Vickie for the paints and play dough cutters - the children are having great fun using them. Just a reminder that there will be no Toddlers on Tuesday 24th October as it is half term. Back on Tuesday 31st October. Jane 5

The term lasts until 4th December. The cost for the term is £20, representing less than £2 per session! I do hope you will join us. I guarantee that you will hear some really good music, in pleasant surroundings, with great company. Please contact Alan Spencer on 01278 760572 [email protected] if you are interested in attending. If you are not sure, you can try a couple of weeks with no obligation. The programme is available on the Brent Knoll Village Website http://www.brentknollvillage.co.uk/musicgroup.htm Alan Spencer, Brent Knoll, Music Circle Hedges and the Public Highway and footpaths in Brent Knoll The Parish Council has received over the past few months a lot of concern about hedges that are overhanging the public footpaths or in some cases the highway. The Parish Council would respectfully point out the duty of care that property owners must exercise on their own land. It is essential that they maintain all of the hedges that adjoin public land so that villagers can walk freely without having to step into a road or possibly worse to injure themselves on overhanging brambles, bushes and trees. Can owners check that any hedging or trees do not obliterate road signage. This ensures that any signs, particularly those relating to speed limits, are well sighted by road users. Where we have specific cases the Parish Council do send letters to the owners of properties however there are so many hedges around the village that it is very difficult to write to everyone. Please do support us and ensure that we can walk freely and safely around our attractive village. Owen J Cullwick, Clerk Flowers at the Village shop I would like to thank all those who bought my flowers at the village shop, and also a great thank you to Caroline for allowing me to place them outside her shop to sell. Live at the cinema – Otello Opera music by Verdi, always amazing, libretto (words) by Arrigo Boito, after the play by Shakespeare. With Antonio Pappano conducting the Royal Opera House orchestra and chorus, Jonas Kaufman singing Otello and Maria Agresta taking the role of Desdemona: this was a wonderful end to the live cinema season. I am sure you know the story of the Moor of Venice, as it is otherwise known. Love turning to mistrust, fuelled by Lago, jealous of Desdemona’s place in Otello’s affections and life. Otello is duped into thinking she is in love with someone else and smothers her, not listening to her pleadings and statements of love. He finally realises she was telling the truth and stabs himself. Jonas Kaufman was singing Otello for the first time – a very demanding role where he is on stage almost the whole of the opera. He has a beautiful voice, and gave us glorious tenor singing, which I can still hear in my head more than a month later (this performance was at the end of June). Maria Agresta has a pure soprano, which sends shivers down the spine on the high notes, and the singing at the end, when she is half on/half off the bed – well, how do they sing laid on their back, feet on the bed? I always think it a shame that opera does not bring in the big audiences, as the music is superb, acting wonderful – all the supporting roles were done with attention to great detail – and the costumes and set were amazing. If you have never been to an opera, I do urge you to give it a try: I’m sure you would enjoy it more than you think and the subtitles help to understand what they are saying. Next season’s treats include “La Boheme” on 3rd October and 2 ballets – Alice’s adventures in Wonderland on 23rd October and “The Nutcracker” on December 5th. We also saw two films at the end of June/beginning of July – Churchill and Dunkirk. I wasn’t sure what to make of “Churchill”; it showed him as rather old-fashioned and stuck in the past. The main theme was Operation Overlord or D-Day, very driven by the Americans. There was a disclaimer at the end saying that events were fictitious, so maybe the portrayal of Winston was for their own ends to make the plot of the film popular. Very well acted by Brian Cox not an actor I have come across before, he put over Churchill very well and gave a good insight into how he might have thought. As Winston had been on the Western front in the First World War, he was against the invasion as Eisenhower and Montgomery wanted to do it, thinking it would result in trench warfare and many deaths. A rather negative portrayal of Churchill, which I suppose doesn’t resonate with those of us who grew up with the popular image of him. Dunkirk, on the other hand, was a fabulous film. The cinema was full, we were on the front row, which was not the best place to be, but all that was left. Although people had said it was a weepy, we didn’t find that – at least not until the end when the small boats suddenly appeared on the horizon, coming to fetch the army. The reason for that, I think, was because the film did not follow one particular person, but put at least 3 different perspectives parallel to each other. One of a small boat, another was in the air, and a third was on the ground, at a place called “The Mole” where the men were boarding the craft to go out to destroyers. The Luftwaffe, of course, were bombing the big ships, and sinking them, so small ships were the answer. An insight into what it was like on the beaches of Dunkirk, and a very good film, I’ve not seen one that good for a while. The absence of big star parts was actually helpful, as it made the action all the more real. Kenneth Branagh was probably the biggest star and he had a role as a navy officer on the Mole. Not a lead part, but one of the people directing operations, he decided to stay on after all men had been taken off, so who knows what happened to him. One of the most moving scenes was right at the end when the only remaining aircraft, having had its engine shot out, was coasting over the beach away from the people on the beach, came to rest on the sand- good flying - and the pilot got out, set fire to the plane and waited for the Germans who came over the horizon, his job done, he had done his best to keep them at bay. War is war. Pauline Chadwick FRONT COVER Photos Thanks to Stephen Baggs for his pictures of around the village. Bob 16

WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE Each month the BKN will have a small picture quiz – no prizes, but I hope you may enjoy guessing where the object shown is located within the Parish boundary. Last month’s object is one of the notices that have recently appeared on all railway bridges to identify them uniquely. This one is on the bridge in Middle Street. This month features part of something we have all passed by but which may not be quite as obvious, unless you are looking in the right direction at the right time. So where is it? The answer and another object will be shown next month. JaPe

Dates for the next meetings:- October 18th - Bargain Hunt – Veronica Andrew November 15th - Christmas Fayre We are a very friendly group and we welcome new members. We meet at 2.30pm in the Parish Hall on the third Wednesday of every month. For more information, contact either Karen Russell on 01278 769 382 or Ann Robson 01278 760 981. At our meeting on October 11th, 2.30pm, at the Parish Hall, Dr Burroughes will enlighten us about his experiences as a WI speaker. JMG “Meet & Eat” Dear Meet and Eaters, We regret that we are unable to provide a Meet and Eat lunch in October as our chefs are either on their travels or preparing for significant family events. This year we have had a glut of lovely eating apples on our tree, far too many for my wife and I so we decided to put some in a functional tray outside our house for passers-by to help themselves which I am pleased to say they did. May I say, to one person, however, you were not supposed to take the tray as well! BDF 24

The Mango Hub Cookery School TheMangoHubCookerySchooliscomingtoBrent KnollParishHallinNovemberforthefirsttime. Master Chef Fred Balakrishna was traditionally trained and has years of experience in high-end catering. Together with this, he adds the knowledge and skills from his Indian heritage: he will show you how to cook with spices to create your own personalized Masala, which is an aromatic blend of different spices- such as Garam Masala. You can then use your new skills to create delicious food at home to impress and delight your family and friends. Fred’s heritage is from Kerela in Southern India, which is rich in local spices and traditional recipes going back over centuries. India’s South West coast and especially Kerela had established itself as a major spice trade centre from as early as 3000 B.C. A short demonstration from Fred will be followed by time for you to cook using your new skills, whilst supported by him and his team. Please Contact the Clerk if you require any information Owen Cullwick, Mob 07917 445 215, [email protected] Clerk Adult Playground Equipment The Brent Knoll Parish Council is looking into ways of providing some outdoor exercise equipment on the village green for young people and adults. Children are already well provided for in that area. To have adult equipment encourages exercise in pleasant and peaceful surroundings. Spin-offs from such activities would give physical and mental benefits thus increasing socialisation and fun. To have children, young people and adults sharing the Village Green facilities in this way can only be good for the social co-ordination and ambience of the village. A group of Parish Councillors visited a local site recently where such equipment has been installed. The equipment was in a compact space, near the children's play area and was impressive. Among the equipment was a leg press, air walker, static bicycle, arm bike, cross rider, skier, chest press, body twist and stepper. A photograph of such equipment can be seen at the Village Shop. Before the Parish Council embarks on such a scheme, it needs to know what the response from the village would be. If enough people show interest, then a consultation meeting would take place at which parishioners would find out more about the scheme and could express their preferences. We would ask you therefore to fill in the tear off Slip below and hand it in at the Village Shop as soon as possible. Thank You, Brent Knoll Parish Council I am in favour of the Brent Knoll Parish Council looking into ways of funding and setting up a scheme of exercise apparatus on the village green for adults.

Strange Stories of Somerset In bygone days, highwaymen used inns, both for their source of information, regarding wealthy travellers and also as a permanent base, often living in the inn, where the landlord would provide a warning of authorities approaching. One such highwayman named Pocock, had a different form of accommodation, he lived in a cave. His hideout, being on a wooded hillside, near Chilton Polden village was close to the Priory. This was well chosen, as the road along the top of the hill between Bridgwater and provided a good lookout for both victims and also possible threats. Pocock’s “home”, as cave dwelling goes was quite luxurious, having three rooms, the outer one for his horse, making it an easy getaway if required, the next room being used for living in and the small room for sleeping in. Pocock was held in high regard by the locals, partly by him giving them some of the money he stole. He never robbed women or children and was said to be helpful to deserving travellers, but only those not worth robbing, I guess. It was said that Pocock’s horse had specially designed shoes for quick getaways. However, he was eventually discovered by the authorities and following a fierce battle he was taken off, to end on the gallows. His cave was eventually sealed off when some of the props gave way and thus closed for ever. Roger Ward Lympsham Gardening Club In September, Ian Williamson gave us a fascinating illustrated talk about Walking in Nepal, which he did to help raise funds for Taunton’s St. Margaret’s Hospice. After flying to Nepal and a days travel to Pokhara, he joined a group on the five day Ghorepani /Poon Hill Trek. Set in wonderful mountain scenery, their guides took them up through small villages and rhodendron forests, across narrow suspension bridges. They slept in lodges called teahouses, and trekked up stone stairs to finally reach Ghorepani - the highest village on their trek. The following morning it was a 4.30am start in order to reach the top of Poon Hill in time to watch the spectacular sunrise over the snow covered Annapurna mountains. After trekking back down to Pokhara, Ian returned to Kathmandu and decided to extend his stay. In 2015 there had been a severe earthquake in the region in which thousands of people died and over three million left homeless. Ian joined another group of people and helped to build a new safer house for a homeless family. Future Meetings Tuesday 10th October A Garland’s topic will be Edwardian Gardening. 7.45pm at Lympsham Manor Hall. Tuesday 14th November Starlings on the with Neil Clarke. Tuesday 12th December To be announced. Mariette Denison

I am particularly pleased with my “Snail Trails” as all the clues are next to another with no isolated ones, which is quite rare. Comments were “The hard one this month took two coffee breaks. The easy but tough one took four coffee breaks!!!!!!” – “I rate the hard Sudoku harder than the Tough one” - “Had a little problem with this month’s Sudoku but managed it”. Solutions came from Klaus Brenner, Mac Hares, Frankie New, Peter Osborn, John Spiers, Ted Toon and Gordon Watson. Gordon Watson won the ballot. LEBE’s Community Café We would like to Welcome YOU to LEBE’s Community café. Open every Tuesday 10-4.30pm at the Pavilion, Lympsham. Come on in for good company, great coffee/tea and excellent homemade cakes. Make new friends, meet old ones and help to make this the place you want to come! All people, ideas and well behaved dogs welcome. Tel: Lynne Booth on 01934 750 589 and 07914 003 323 or Helen Bretherton on 01934 750361 and 07740 783251 for more information. Lympsham, Eastertown, BrentKnoll and EastBrent Community Café Further Matters of Parish Interest from the Council Telephone Kiosk Recently the Parish Council, with the kind permission of Caroline Chennels on whose land the Kiosk sits, decided to adopt the unit for a community benefit. The adoption is part of Plan by BT to dispose of such property and the Parish Council decided that it would be in the interests of this village to acquire the unit for other purposes. A decision will be taken during the Autumn on its new use once all considerations have been made. If you have ideas for its newly adopted status, the Parish Council would love to hear your ideas. Please contact the Clerk Owen Cullwick on 07917 445 215 or email at [email protected]. Monthly Meetings The Council has decided to make the start time of monthly meetings and those of any provisional meetings 7pm, which would commence with an open session that members of the public can participate in with any observations, questions or concerns specifically about items on the agenda. Once the public session is completed, then the Council will go into a full session. At this point, only the Parish Council will be taking part in the meeting. Parish Surgery On the first Wednesday of each month, apart from August, there is a Parish Surgery between 4pm and 5.30pm and we welcome everybody to come and put their views to the clerk and a member of the Council. On occasions we have a officer in attendance and usually our village agent Kim Wilcox kindly attends. Dog Bin Provision in the Village One matter raised at a recent surgery was to increase the numbers of Dog bins in the village. The Parish Council will be considering this matter at forthcoming Autumn meetings. If you feel there is an area that has a substantial need please do contact the clerk on 07917445215 or email [email protected]. However the resources are limited and these bins are costly to install and to maintain throughout the year. Speed Indicator Device This unit was recently damaged, which is why it has been absent from the village for a while. We will be returning it to the manufacturers in due course and then it can be re installed once again highlighting the Parish Council’s intention to mitigate the problem of vehicle speed in this village. THE NUTTALL TRUST (Registered Charity No 1085196) The Nuttall Trust is a charity which was set up to provide financial support for local projects, community organisations and individuals within the villages of East Brent, Lympsham, Brent Knoll and Mark. It was made possible by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. James Nuttall who left part of their estate for that purpose. The Trust has been operating for more than a decade. During that time, the four trustees (one to represent each of the four villages) have been able to provide varying sums of money to different projects and causes. In making available such sums, the trustees seek to balance the likely benefit of funding to individuals and/or to the community as a whole, the level of local support for any particular project, whether there is evidence as to the need for such funding, the likelihood of the balance being raised from other sources, together with the apparent prospects of the project getting off the ground if funding were to be provided. If funding is provided, it is expected to be used solely for the purpose set out in the application, Over the past, the Trust has provided funds for over two hundred different projects and causes. However, we do not wish to miss other deserving causes and the purpose of this notice is to create greater awareness of the Nuttall Trust within the community of Brent Knoll. If you are interested in applying for a grant or would like further information before deciding whether to apply, please give me a call on 01278 760 422 or email [email protected]. There is an application form which I will send you, either in paper form or by e-mail, to assist you with the application process. All applications are treated in complete confidence and should be submitted by the end of the year for review by the Trustees early in the New Year. If you have applied before, please do not be put off, whether or not you were successful in that earlier application. Martin Wilkins, Trustee, Nuttall Trust.

“I’ve got some new tablets from my doctor last week” “Oh Good, you must be a regular customer, what have you got now?” “Well, I think they are for my blood, but it’s the instructions on the box, it says take one tablet twice a day! “That’s going to be a clever one to do, have you tried it yet?” “No” “Can I watch to see how it’s done?” “No! I haven’t opened the box yet!” 40

News from the Primary The start of the Autumn term is always an exciting time, as we welcome the youngest children into the Reception Class. This term, however, we have also welcomed several children into other year groups as well, so the school is now at its largest ever. We still have five classes and none are overfull compared to some schools as we have an average class number still below thirty, but the old Victorian hall could do with a little extension! Talking of space, we have begun to utilise our new mini-classroom, sited in the school field, and henceforth to be known as the West Croft Room, in thanks to John Harris’ kind contributions to school funds. Whilst we have new faces to get to know, we also look forward to participating in some of the old favourites. Our footballers are already signed up to compete in Bridgwater in October and our runners have been asked to prepare for their first competitive race in . Our best mathematical minds will soon be practising for the annual Maths Challenge at The Wellington School in November - and everyone will be looking forward to the trips and visits already planned by the teachers. If you would like to see what we get up to during each term, please do go to the school’s web-site (and it’s easiest to just Google ‘Brent Knoll Primary’) and find the newsletter link. Chris Burman, Head teacher Just for Fun On the first day of the new school year, the teacher asked a boy, “What are your parent’s names?” The boy replied, “My father’s name is laughing and my mother’s name is smiling.” The teacher said, “Are you kidding?” The boy said, “No, Kidding is my brother. I’m joking.” The Friendly Pharmacist

Brent Knoll Weather Report – August 2017 August was a mixed bag this year. The first three weeks were disappointingly cool and cloudy, sometimes feeling quite autumnal, but the month finished with blue skies and sunshine for the Bank Holiday weekend. Most of August saw a continuation of the procession of Atlantic lows, which brought a dull end to July, but high pressure was never far away to our south. This meant that the lows were pushed to our north, so although it was generally dull and cool, we escaped the worst of the weather - rainfall totals here were low, whereas the north of the UK got a soaking. Meanwhile southern Europe endured a heatwave, with temperatures well into the 40s. I think perhaps we got the best of it, and we did see a few sunny spells when that high pressure nudged its way north for a day or two. Things changed when the remains of Hurricane Gert arrived in the UK on the 21st, sucking warm and humid air up from the south. This gave temperatures a much- needed boost, but it was humid enough for some early morning fog and there was a good deal of cloud. Then, as Gert moved off on the 23rd, we finally saw high pressure building from the south. The skies cleared, the temperature rose, Summer weather returned and stayed with us right through to Bank Holiday Monday. Sunday was the warmest day with a high of 25.3°C – quite respectable for late August. The high moved off on Tuesday, and for the last few days of August, it was sunshine and light showers. The Bank Holiday sunshine brought August’s mean temperature up to 16.1°C, just below normal, and despite the gloomy start, the rainfall total was only 45.6mm - making this the second-driest August we have recorded. We’re into Autumn now, so a few more numbers – the mean Summer temperature was 16.6°C, which is about normal, with the mediocre July and August offset by a warm June. Total rainfall was in the normal range at 165.4mm. Perhaps the most notable feature was the record high temperature of 32.8°C back in June, with the 30°C barrier broken on three consecutive days. I’ll mention one other event - this is the weather station’s 10th birthday, so we now have a decade of weather records for Brent Knoll. Looking back in the archives, I see that we also have eight years of BKN weather articles – the first one described the weather in September 2009. See you next month. More Ramblings of a Rambler I have just received an Email stating it is three days before the deadline for items to be included in the October issue of the BKN. I am on my own this month as the Mini Rambler has gone back to school and the pressure is on me to do some rambling. First let me tell you about a plant I found growing among my Pumpkins, it was so unusual that I thought it needed further investigation. Not having much success, I showed it to a neighbour who told me she had an app that helped with identification of plants, and it was not long before she informed me that the plant was Jimsonweed. The following is an abstract from the web. x Jimsonweed is a poisonous plant; all parts of the plant are toxic; however, the seeds, fruit, and leaves contain the highest level of alkaloids and are the usual source of poisoning in humans, cattle, goats, horses, poultry, sheep, and swine. Poisoning of humans in recent years has been more frequent than livestock poisoning. Human poisoning results from sucking the nectar from flowers or consuming the seeds. Due to Jimsonweed’s strong unpleasant odour and taste, animals avoid grazing it unless other more desirable forage species are not available. x Alkaloids are related to those found in magic mushrooms; however, magic mushrooms do not cause death even if consumed in a large quantity. x The plant contains tropane alkaloids, which affects the central nervous system, with the major alkaloids being atropine and scopolamine. x Symptoms associated with jimsonweed include blurred vision, confusion, agitation, and combative behaviour. The swallows are still roosting at night but stay on the wing all day strengthening their muscles for the long flight ahead of them, but I will not be sorry to see them fly away then I can give my garage a well needed clean. A baby swallow caused disruption to the household recently when it decided to fly inside the house, but after a lot of persuasion and the agility of the rambleress, it was removed safe and sound. While on my walk with my canine friends I witnessed two sheep, each with a magpie on its back checking the fleeces for insects. There are a lot of berries about in the hedgerows and old folk maintain that we could be in for a hard Winter. Keep rambling. The Rambler Harvest Supper 2017 It’s Harvest Supper time again. Traffic Lights I fail to understand why there is so much ill feeling with the proposed traffic lights at the A38 junction. For as long as I can remember, the village has been crying out for lights. One can wait a long while and then some people take their courage in both hands and dash across. Some people may be a little inconvenienced and maybe the traffic will back up sometimes, but we should be able to cross the A38 in safety. As far as waiting for a death before a decision is made; perhaps relatives and friends of that poor soul, will maybe feel a little differently. Sally Wingate BRENT KNOLL AND MARK TENNIS CLUB The tennis courts have been busy over the Summer with lots of children and adults enjoying coaching sessions with Dean and social play. A men’s team and a ladies team have been playing in the North Somerset League on Monday and Tuesday evenings. As Autumn approaches, coaching will continue on Thursday afternoon and evenings during term time. A team has been entered in the mixed Winter League. Matches will be played on Sunday mornings. Men’s club night is on Monday evenings, starting at around 7.30pm and Ladies morning is also on Mondays, starting at around 10am. There will be some “Rusty Racket” coaching for adult beginners and for those that have not played for a while. This coaching is also open to non-members at £5 per session. Contact [email protected] for details of dates. Floodlights at the courts have recently had some maintenance repairs, replacing a few failed lamps. As the system is now over 20 years old and difficult to maintain, the club will be looking, in the future, at upgrading to a modern lower level alternative. The club is always happy to welcome new players and members. For details, contact Alison at [email protected]. Winter is approaching With the dark winter nights soon approaching, your local beat team ask you all to be a little bit mindful of the following: Your Home: x Look in when you’re out – set timers for lights/radio x Lock all doors and windows before you leave x Set any house alarm you may have x Store valuable items and jewellery in places which are well hidden and difficult to reach. x Postcode your property with an ultra-violet pen x Put all boxes into bin liners or take them to a tip so as not to advertise you have new items. x If going away – remember to cancel milk and paper deliveries, give a trusted neighbour a key and ask if they will put a light on and close curtains Your Car: x Lock all doors and windows and always set any security device when leaving your car x Never leave the keys in the ignition when the car is unattended, even while you’re paying for petrol or clearing ice from windows on cold mornings. x At home, put car keys out of sight x Don’t leave anything on view inside your car, it only takes moments to break in and steal it: this includes removing your Sat Nav holder from the windscreen. x Empty the glove compartment and leave it open x Take care of your satellite navigation system: these are very popular with thieves. Yourself: x Don’t forget to keep yourself safe at night whilst out and about. Wear Hi-Viz clothing and use a torch. Our rural villages can be very dark places at night. x If cycling – Dust off your lights and make sure they work! You may need to use them as early as 4pm soon. PCSO 7675 Sam Piers MenShed With the MenShed opening on 4th July, the shedders are a group of men meeting up to share tools and resources to work on projects of their own choosing. There will be a small charge to cover costs, £2.00 for members, £3.00 for visitors, refreshments included. All welcome. Ann Griffiths Brent Knoll Butterflies in 2017 Two things have prompted this piece for the BKN. First, I was asked by someone in July whether I had taken part in the national Butterfly Conservation butterfly count. “Brent Knoll needs to be on the map”, and, second, the Rambler has made some comments about butterfly numbers in the September BKN. My reply to the first question was “no, but Brent Knoll is on the national butterfly map” because it is part of the regular national survey that is taken each week in the Summer. This piece describes what I do to participate in the survey and also responds to the question of whether it was a good Summer for butterflies around Brent Knoll in 2017. So, how is Brent Knoll on the national butterfly map? It is part of a regular Transect survey that is done each week between April and September at over 2000 sites in the UK. The results are fed into a national database. I start from St Michael’s churchyard and walk up over the Knoll, down onto Hill Lane and return via Ralph’s Wood and Hangman’s Acre to Church Lane. In case you didn’t know it, Hangman’s Acre is the field opposite Ball Copse Hall off Hill Lane, and is managed as a local nature reserve. It probably contains the best selection of butterfly species around Brent Knoll. I walk slowly along the Transect and record all butterflies seen within a 10 metre corridor. In order to ensure that the maximum number of butterflies is recorded, the walks can only be done when it is sunny and the temperature is right. So what’s the news for 2017? The first thing to report is that the weather was actually quite good for most the period. April, May and June were all warmer than average, with April and May being very dry. Despite a poorish July and August, I have been able to get out regularly to do transects. The second point is that 2017 appears to have been the best year of the last five with numbers about 15% above average. For various reasons I haven’t been able to access records between 2008 and 2012, but my impression is that numbers are reasonably stable with relatively small variations from year to year over the past 10 years. But what about different species? The most common species is the meadow brown and this varies from 45% of the total to 67%, the number for this year. So the Rambler was probably right. There were a higher number of meadow butterflies on his patch than usual. This year both small and large skippers did well, as did marbled whites. Orange tips were much in evidence in the Spring and common blues had two good broods. The colony of wall browns on the top of the Knoll maintains good numbers. However, there were fewer migrant butterflies such as painted lady and red admiral. Small tortoiseshell butterfly numbers have been poor this year but this butterfly has been suffering from predation by a parasite over recent years. So, it is not all doom and gloom for our local butterflies. Ged Tennis Club Quiz Night Quiz Night on Saturday, 21st October at East Brent Village Hall at 7.30pm. £5 per head including refreshments.
