FRATERNITY OF DELTA SIGMA PI
Gentlemen:
We, the undersigned members of Beta Alpha Epsilon, hereby earnestly petition for a charter to establish a chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, New Mexico.
Our organization has established membership, program, administrative, financial, and research standards equivalent to those maintained by the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi. Having as our major purpose the securing of affiliation with Delta Sigma Pi, we are aware of the high ideas, the purposes, and the requirements of the said Fraternity. Furthermore, Beta Alpha Epsilon has abided by them, and pledges to so continue by the same high standards in the future.
In seeking this affiliation, we pledge ourselves to uphold the Constitution and By-laws of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, to adhere to the traditions of the organization, and to observe faithfully the rules and regulations set forth by the Fraternity.

It received its charter as a 2 year junior college in 1927; the first unit of the present Administration Building was completed in 1931; but, it was not until the summer session of 1934 that the first courses were offered. The growth of the University has been phenomenal. By 1940 a four year degree program was in effect. In 1946 the University was accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as a four- year liberal arts college. Graduate work leading to the master degree was added in 1949. Acceptance by the National University Extension Association was granted in 1958. Eastern has thrived in the true hardy pioneer fashion that has exemplified the progress made in the development of the West. It has often been pointed out that Eastern was born in the depths of a depression and struggled through a great world war in its formative years. Nevertheless, it has earned for itself an important place in education in the Southwest. Eastern holds the distinction of being the youngest university in America ever to earn full accreditation by the North Central Association. Much of the credit for the success of the University is due to its first Dean and subsequent president. Dr. Floyd D. Golden, who has served the institution with distinction for twenty-six years. The beneficial influence of Dr. Golden as a person, as an educator, and as a citizen will long be felt and remembered. From a nwdest beginning in 1934 of fewer than 200 students Eastern served approximately 3900 students in 1959-1960 in all sessions and extensions. The faculty and staff for the current year is approximately 185. The present physical plant comprises some thirty-three buildings valued in excess of nine million dollars. The curricula of the University has kept pace with physical growth. A student enrolling at Eastern may choose his course of study from five different schools. Liberal Arts, Business and Economics, Music, Teacher Education or Technology. The School of Liberal Arts is divided into five divisions -- general education; language, literature and fine arts; mathematics and natural sciences; physical education and health; and social studies and psychology. In the School of Technology are four divisions -- agriculture, engineering, home economics and industrial arts. Eastern is located in the city of Portales, New Mexico, a city of 10,120 on the extreme eastern edge of the state. Portales is 90 miles northeast of Roswell, and 120 miles southwest of Amarillo, Texas. Nearly located cities are Clovis, Tucumcari, Lovington and Hobbs, all in New Mexico. Eastern is an active member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Teams are fielded in football, basketball, golf, tennis, and swimming. In addition intermural sports receive considerable enqphasis. With the proposed expansion plan, its location and from indications of the rapid growth of the school, it is a probability that Eastern New Mexico University will continue to expand into one of the best and largest Schools of higher learning in this section of the Country. ( HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL 0 F BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS The School of Business and Economics is recognized as being the fastest growing and one of the most progressive of Eastern New Mexico University. Founded in 1945, it presently has an enrollment of approximately 230 business majors. Degrees are being offered for both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics. At its inception in 1945, the school had 5 full-time faculty members and offered a four year curriculum leading to the degree, Bachelor of Business and Economics. Also, a two year curriculum in General Business was offered. Subsequently, the Bachelor of Arts degree was offered with the addition of majors in Economics, General Business and Accounting. A two-year Secretarial Science course was also added with an Associate of Arts Degree. In 1949, in conjunction with the School of Teacher Education majors were offered in Teaching of Secretarial Science and Business Science. A major in Office Management was also added. By 1960, the school had expanded to include twelve faculty members. Degrees are offered with majors in Accounting, Business Administration, General Business Education, Secretarial Science, Economics, Finance, Industrial Management, Marketing, and Secretarial Administration. The growth and development of this School has been under the watchful eye of the very capable Dr. Becky Sharp, chairman of the School of Business and Economics. She has been connected with this department since its origination and has been chairman for the past six years. A new building to house the School of Business and Economics is in the planning stage. The need is recognized by the Adminis tration and should materialize in the near future.
