It also traces the ancestry in Scotland of ,vu­ Uam Robertson and his wife, Mary Livingston, and the ancestry in Scot­ land of James Small and his wife. Ann Beveridge. A brother of the lat~ ter was grandfather of Gen. John L. Beveridge, former -governor of Illinoi$ and cousin to our own Senator Beve~ idge's great-grandfather. Kuhne Beveridge, the celebrated sculptor (now residing in London), whose ·name 1s honored in art circles the world over, is a granddaughter of General Beveddge, while the latter'~ brother, James H. Beveridge, was one time treasurer of the state of Illinois ~nd was treasurer of the Lincoln Mon: nment Commission, at Springfield. Among the present-day notables found. j:n this lineage is Jan1es A. Patten, the -great bull of the Chicago wheat pit, ·who has lately given Ogdon Armour .such a tussle. The late Judge Gilbert Robertson, jr., of Troy, who for years ·was one of the most conspicuous fig­ ures in New York "up state" politics, ~lso finds prominent mention here. In­ diana finds worthy representation in the life of the late Rev. Gilbert Smal1, for many years pastor of a church in this city, who was chaplain of Indi­ ana's historic "war legislature," in 1861, and whose extensive Masonic writings have made his name famlliar among Masons all over the country. A unique feature of this record is the number of royal lines claimed ip. the lineage. \Vhile it seems to be the thing for all genealogists to carry An1erican families back to the days when their ancestors were holding down thrones, Dr. Small has gone them all a bit better in his research, having made out a list of fifty-four ( count 'em!) individual rulers-kings4 emperors and czars-claimed a.s an~ cestors in the lineage he has so pains• takingly unrolled for the edification o"f the related families, which, it must be admitted, is "going some" for staid American folk in the year of indepen­ dence 132. As the index to this interesting volume carries something like 3,000 names, it is apparent that Dr. Small did not let many of· the "related fami­ lies" escape. It is an in­ teresting study, and those who have been caught in the mazes of this sort of research declare it to be a most fascinating one. One of the most pretentious of the numerous volumes of this sort which have come out in Indiana has just come fron1 the Pratt press, this city, being "The Genealogy of the Robert­ son, Small and Related Families,'' by Archibald Robertson Small, M. D., late of Chicago. Dr. Small died last June, just on the eve of beginning pub­ lication of the records to which he had given much patient and painstaking ·research. The work thus laid down was taken up by Albert Garrett Small, of the An1erican Press Association, this city, a cousin of the deceased. who has seen the work through the ,press. I owe much-more, indeed, than words can repay-to the many kindly messages of encouragement which have proved a constant stimulus to me during the time this work has been in my hands, as no doubt previous expressions of a similar character had stimulated Dr. Sn1all to a continuation of the arduous task he had undertaken, and to which he gave the best part of the later years of his life. To those ·who may not be acquainted with these circumstances, however, a word of explanation is due. I did not have the honor of a personal acquaintance with Dr. Small, though I had known him very pleasantly through a some­ time and most delightful correspondence on matters relating to his great ,vork. What there was in this correspondence that pron1pted him to leave to me the honorable task of giving fruition to his labors, I do not kno-w. Whatever it was, I shall always cherish most dearly this mark of his confidence. No one could have been more astonished than was I when, following his sudden and-we can not help feeling-untimely death, I re­ ceived his precious manuscript with formal notice that it was his last will that I should take up the ,vork ,vhere he had been compelled to lay it do-wn, and give publication to these pages. That this was no sudden detern1ination on his part, makes all the more binding upon me the obligation his kindly will imposed. In a letter to l\1iss Jennie l\f. Patten, of Yuma, Colo­ rado, whose valuable assistance in the ,vork of compiling these men1oirs Dr. Sn1all has gratefully ackno,vledged in his preface, our biographer ,vrote, 1\-Iarch 3, 1905, more than t,vo years be­ fore his death : '' I hope during the sun11ner to have tins ·work all written up in form, and if it is not published right away, and I should die, anyone else ,vho 1night take enough interest in it could have it published as well as n1yself. Of course, I would like to complete the work myself before I die, but I do believe there is enough interest manifested already in son1e quarters to insure its pub­ lication even though I should be taken a,vay no,v. Albert G. Small, of Indianapolis, son of the Rev. Gilbert Small, would be a good man to take hold of it, and he, I think, is sufficiently in- terested in it to undertake the work.
