    Cesare Zavattini – Cronologia dettagliata (a cura di Paolo Nuzzi) 1902 Cesare Zavattini nasce a Luzzara (Reggio Emilia) il 20 settembre, primo di cinque figli - seguiranno: Tina, Mario, Angela, Angelo - da Arturo (pasticciere) e Ida Giovanardi (figlia di "prestinai", ossia fornai); i genitori gestiscono un bar-albergo-ristorante di loro proprietà. 1908 Frequenta la prima elementare a Luzzara. Serve messa come chierichetto nella chiesa di San Giorgio. 1909 In settembre i genitori lo mandano a studiare a Bergamo, ospite della zia Silvia, figlia di un cugino di suo padre, che si prenderà cura di lui. Viene iscritto alla seconda elementare nella scuola Tassi. 1911 Assiste, al Teatro Nuovo di Bergamo, ad uno spettacolo del grande trasformista Leopoldo Fregoli. In essa il docente fa il punto su una tematica abbastanza insolita: l’uso del cinema – in particolare neorealista e, nella fattispecie, di quello tratto dai soggetti cinematografici zavattiniani - come fonte per la storia contemporanea. Si tratta del terzo volume della collana dell’editore Aliberti: 'Quaderni dell'Archivio Cesare Zavattini'.. La collana è un progetto dell'Archivio Cesare Zavattini-Centro studi e ricerche / Comune di Reggio Emilia / Biblioteca Panizzi.     The Museum of Modern Art VITTORIO DE SICA The French film critic Andre Bazin wrote of Vittorio De Sica, "To explain De Sica, we must go back to the source of his art, namely, his tenderness, his love. The quality shared in common by Miracle in Milan and The Bicycle Thief...is the author's inexhaustible affection for his characters." Born in 1902 in Sora, near Rome, Vittorio De Sica spent his early years in Naples. His father, Umberto De Sica, was a bank clerk and former journalist who knew many show business people and used these contacts to launch his son's career. In his teens De Sica made his screen debut and was popular as a singer of Neapolitan songs in amateur entertainments. De Sica studied accounting in Rome and completed his military service before taking a job in a theater company. He progressed from playing clowns and old men to leading roles in romantic comedies, and by 1930 he was a matinee idol. Throughout the thirties, he teamed frequently with director Mario Camerini, the most prestigious Italian director of the era, in a series of lighthearted films such as I'd Give a Million (1935). In the years 1940-42, De Sica directed several minor films in the "white telephone" film genre, developing his directorial and technical skills. In 1943 he directed The Children are Matching Us, which he wrote with Cesare Zavattini.     Vittorio De Sica Director, Actor, Screenwriter Birth Jul 7, 1902 (Sora, Italy) Death Nov 13, 1974 (Paris, France) Genres Drama, Comedy, Romance The seminal figure of the neorealism movement, Vittorio De Sica was born in Sora, Italy, on July 7, 1901. Raised in Naples, he began working as an office clerk at a young age in order to help support his impoverished family. He became fascinated by acting while still a youth, and made his screen debut in 1918's The Clemenceau Affair at the age of just 16. In 1923, De Sica joined Tatiana Pavlova's famed stage company, and by the end of the decade his dashing good looks had made him one of the Italian theater's most prominent matinee idols. With 1932's La Vecchia Signora, he made his sound-era film debut and went on to become an even bigger star in the cinema, appearing primarily in light romantic comedies throughout the decade. In 1939, De Sica graduated to the director's chair with Rose Scarlatte. Over the next two years he helmed three more features (1940's Maddalena, Zero in Condotta along with 1941's Teresa Venerdì and Un Garibaldino al Convento, respectively), but his work lacked distinction until he, along with fellow Italian filmmakers Roberto Rossellini and Luchino Visconti, began exploring the possibilities of making more humanistic movies documenting the harsh realities facing their countrymen as a result of World War II. With 1942's I Bambini ci Guardano, De Sica revolutionized the Italian film industry, crafting a poignant, heartfelt portrait of a downtrodden culture free of the conventions of Hollywood production.

    La leçon de cinéma «Miracle à Milan, un conte poétique » LE FILM « Les clochards d’un bidonville de Milan sont menacés d’expulsion par un homme d’affaires qui a découvert du pétrole sur leur terrain. Leur ange gardien, Toto, un jeune homme aussi généreux que naïf, parviendra-t-il à accomplir un nouveau miracle ? » Le scénario de Miracle à Milan est né en 1939 de l’imagination de Cesare Zavattini sous le titre « Donnons à tout le monde un cheval à bascule ». En ayant fait la lecture à Vittorio De Sica, ce dernier après trente films comme acteur voudrait faire avec cette histoire ses débuts dans la réalisation. Il devra attendre plus de dix ans avant que le projet devenu un livre ne prenne corps. Il confiait que le thème le laissait sans repos depuis des années : l’indifférence des humains à l'égard des besoins d’autrui. D’où son vœu de réaliser une fable, un conte poétique dans lequel s'affrontent le monde naïf des pauvres et le monde avide des riches. Après les deux chefs-d’œuvre réalistes que sont Sciuscia et Le Voleur de bicyclette, le duo De Sica et Zavattini offrait « un type de production entièrement nouveau en Italie, fantastique, ironique, satirique, grotesque et imprégné de critique sociale. ». Sorti en Italie en février 1951, Miracle à Milan reçut en mai le Grand Prix (l'équivalent de la future Palme d'or) et le Prix international de la critique au Festival de Cannes.
