Welcome to the 93rd Hazel Grove Musical Festival.

Firstly, my thanks must go to the dedicated committee and all the many other volunteers who help in bringing this event together, whether behind the scenes, stewarding, serving teas or baking amazing cakes. This creates the basis for the professional and friendly atmosphere that we pride ourselves on in supporting competitors to perform their talents.

2 NOTICES TO ALL FESTIVAL ATTENDEES

- Child Protection, Data Protection and Safer Festivals Policies are available on the Hazel Grove Musical Festival website (www.hazelgrovemusicalfestival.org.uk) and in the entrance lobby at each venue.

- Video/audio recording or photography is not allowed during the Festival.

- Please note that there is limited parking available at Wesley Street, and there are parking restrictions on streets adjacent to the Festival sites. Competitors and audience members are advised to allow sufficient time to access the classes on time.

- Light refreshments (hot and cold drinks, crisps and cakes) will be available, but competitors, volunteers and audience members are invited to bring their own lunches and snacks. Hazel Grove has a number of shops and coffee lounges where sandwiches and hot snacks can be purchased. These include Asda, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, M&S Simply Food, Parry’s Bakery, McDonalds, the Wilfred Wood (Wetherspoons) and O’Hares.

WINNERS’ CONCERT

Competitors may be asked to participate in the Winners’ Concert which will be held on Saturday 07 March 2020 at 7pm at Hazel Grove Methodist Church. Tickets: Adults £5.00; Children £1.00 (inc refreshments). Proceeds from the concert will go to the Hazel Grove Musical Festival.

COPYRIGHT and PHOTOCOPYING

1. The Music Publishers' Association Code of Practice on Photocopying Copyright Works makes the following concession for copying own choice pieces from volumes only for the use of the adjudicator at a festival, provided that the entrant or participant has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed by the Administrator of the festival immediately after the event.

2. The Hazel Grove Festival is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that the entrants do not have to seek copyright permission for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items (*) performed, to a time limit of 10 minutes. Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that their participation in the festival means that authors will be reimbursed directly as a consequence of their work being performed at this festival. Duologues and group dramatic activity are not covered by this agreement, and copyright for these items should be sought by performers at the time of entry.

(*) Solo dramatic items must be announced with title and author at the time of performance to qualify for copyright indemnity, and the performer must not change the words or gender of the character.

The festival uses the marks system:

90+ or OUTSTANDING An exceptional performance, both technically and artistically 87-89 or DISTINCTION An excellent performance technically and artistically 84-86 or COMMENDED A convincing performance technically and artistically 81-83 or MERIT A capable performance showing some artistic appreciation and/or technical ability 78-80 or MODERATE A performance showing development of technique and/or communication 75-77 or FAIR A performance limited in its communication

TROPHY AND MEDAL POLICY

All certificates, medals, trophies and plaques are awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator and the Festival Committee.

First, Second, and Third Prize certificates will be awarded in all Music and Speech and Drama classes where sufficient merit is shown.

In junior classes a keepsake Medal will be awarded to winners in the younger age groups, an enhanced First Prize Certificate will be awarded in the older age groups.

In Adult Classes an enhanced First Prize Certificate will be awarded to the winner of the class. A Trophy/Shield may be awarded to certain Adult Championship classes featuring Pianoforte, Vocal and Choral performances. Any such award will be for a period of up to a year and be returnable to the festival at the end of this period. The winner will bear the cost of any engraving.

4 SPEECH & DRAMA ADJUDICATORS

MIA BALL BA(Hons), LGSM, PGVS, PGCA

Mia has been involved with drama since the age of nine. She studied for her LGSM while reading for an Honours degree in English, and then worked for BBC Radio drama. Having a family encouraged her to go into teaching and she has taught “A” Level and GCSE Drama, directed plays, and prepared students for grade examinations in several independent schools. She holds the MA in Voice Studies from the Central School and now works for LAMDA, examining, running workshops and teachers’ courses in the UK and across the world, including Hong Kong, as well as preparing students for the LAMDA Teachers’ Diploma. She is also an adjudicator member of the British Federation of Festivals.

This will be Mia’s first visit to the Hazel Grove Festival, and she is looking forward to being entertained by all the competitors.

STEPHEN R OWEN BA(Hons), BA(Ed), MA, MEd, PGDip(Ed), FRSA, FESB, FLCM, LRAM, LGSM(Perf) LTCL(Perf), LLCM(TD), LLAM (Hons), ATCL, Cert Ed(Drama)

Stephen trained as a teacher of Drama, Speech and Movement at Trinity and All Saints’ College, University of Leeds. After qualifying, he then studied for a number of years with Eliner Rutherford, gaining specialist teaching and performance diplomas in all aspects of Speech and Drama studies. As well as being responsible for the drama curriculum in the schools where he worked, he also taught pupils of all ages and abilities privately, from complete beginners to Licentiate (RAM) and Fellowship (LCM) level. He became an examiner for The English Speaking Board and The Poetry Society and has adjudicated at many Festivals throughout the country.

In 1985 he was appointed to the headship of a primary school in Derbyshire, an experience he thoroughly enjoyed for the next twenty-two years. It was during this period that he became a Religious Education inspector for the Roman Catholic diocese of Hallam. After retiring from school in 2007 he was appointed as an examiner for The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and also resumed his work as an adjudicator for The British and International Federation of Festivals.

When not examining or adjudicating, Stephen’s leisure time consists of seeing as many plays and as possible and also teaching his young grandchildren to swim properly and ride bikes (without stabilisers).

MUSIC ADJUDICATORS

MARILYNNE DAVIES BA, MEd, LRAM, PGCE, FRSA

Having studied Voice ‘cello and Piano at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Marilynne began her career in education and later studied for a Masters Degree in Education.

Her experience in teaching ranges from nursery to post-graduate levels and she has been external examiner and assessor in performance for a number of universities at graduate and post graduate levels. She was until recently Head of the School of Performance at the York St. John University –a post that included Music, Dance, Drama, Film and Television.

She now has a busy freelance career as an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals, as a voice consultant, teacher and conductor, and as a leader of a variety of workshops. She is Deputy Music Director of the 140 strong Harrogate Choral Society, founder of the Harrogate Polyphonic Choir and director of a small group of female voices called Beati. In 2011 she was honoured to be the first of two Music adjudicators to be created a Fellow of the British and Federation of Festivals.

Her membership of a consortium of European Conservatoires has led her to research into the Practice of Performance. The results of that research have been implemented across the conservatoires. As a singer she has performed in and oratorio and as a recitalist. She has sung with a small professional choir of 20 voices with whom she gave first performances of newly commissioned works.

In her spare time Marilynne enjoys walking – preferably contour walks – playing social Bridge and collecting enamel patch boxes!

5 PHILIP DEWHURST, BA(Hons), PGCE

Philip Dewhurst was born in Bolton, Lancashire. He read music at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne under Professor Denis Matthews where he specialised in performance of the oboe. After finishing his degree he completed a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and went into teaching.

Philip gives occasional recitals and enjoys orchestral and chamber music playing on a freelance basis when his teaching commitments permit. Philip also has a passion for choral music and has conducted and directed choirs and choral societies throughout his career.

As well as adjudicating at music festivals around the country, Philip is an examiner for Trinity Guildhall and an experienced GCSE and A level moderator. At present he is Director of Music at School, Cheshire.

GRAEME HUMPHREY, ARAM

Graeme Humphrey has been a teacher of piano all his professional life, both at the Royal Academy of Music for thirty-six years from 1974 – 2010, and privately. He has also been very actively involved in festival adjudicating and examining – work which has taken him all over the world.

He was awarded an Associated Board Scholarship on the piano from to study at the Royal Academy of Music. He regularly teaches in Hong Kong, and was external examiner at National Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore from 2009 – 2011.

In 1988 he founded the Blackheath Music Festival in London. From 1993 – 2010 he tutored at the Shrewsbury International Summer School and was Music Director of the Summer School from 2004 – 2010.

In 1997 he was elected Warden of the Private Teachers’ Section of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and in 2002 was elected President of the Royal Academy of Music Club.

Graeme Humphrey is an Adjudicator member of the British and Internal Federation of Festivals and in 2013 was made a Fellow of British and International Federation of Festivals.

MARIA JAGUSZ, GRNCM

Maria Jagusz trained at the Royal Northern College of Music where she was awarded the Ricordi Prize for Opera. Further scholarships enabled her to continue her studies at the National Opera Studio where she worked with Solti, Dame Janet Baker and Martin Isepp.

Since then she has performed as an operatic soloist for leading opera companies in the U.K. and Europe working alongside artists like Freni, Carreras, Domingo, Dame Felicity Lott and Dame .

As a concert artist she has performed in many leading venues including The Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, St John’s Smith Square, The Barbican, and Bonn Cathedral. In 2010 she was awarded honorary chairman of the Silurian Consort for her contribution to music in the Cotswolds.

When she is not performing Maria runs a very busy teaching practise and many past students have gone on to have successful careers in the world of Opera and the performing arts. She is a much sort after singing workshop leader for both children and choirs. Her directing credits include Carmen (Swindon Opera and the Playhouse Cheltenham) Little Sweep, Dido and Aneas, Sweeney Todd, La Boheme and Orpheus et Euridice (Longborough Festival Opera), West Side Story, Secret Garden and Jesus Christ Superstar (MJ-UK) .

Future work includes devising and directing Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld” for Longborough Festival Operas newly formed Youth Opera group.

6 KATHRYN PAGE, LRAM, ARCM, DipRCM

Kathryn Page has given over 20 recitals at the South Bank and Wigmore Hall, both as soloist and chamber music pianist. She has toured Norway, Italy, Ireland and Australia where she gave seven recitals at the Sydney Festival and broadcast for ABC.

At home Kathryn has performed at many of the leading music festivals and has given numerous live broadcasts for BBC radio 3 from Broadcasting House, St Georges, Bristol and St David’s Hall, Cardiff. Her interest in contemporary music has led to many world premieres including works by Gary Carpenter, Alisdair Nicholson and Django Bates. She has worked with many established artists including David Campbell, John Lenehan, Joanna MacGregor and Sting! TV work has ranged from a live recital from Paris on CNN, an appearance on the Korean broadcasting network, several performances on Irish TV and a much treasured Blue Peter badge.

In 1991 she recorded the complete set of six Mozart-Grieg duo sonatas for BBC Radio Three. In recent years Kathryn has worked prolifically as a popular and busy adjudicator for the British Federation of Festivals, ABRSM examiner, and administrator for EPTA UK, the Chetham’s International Summer School for Pianists and the International Concerto Competition. She recorded Bartok’s Sonata for 2 Pianos, Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’ and Camilleri’s Concerto for 2 Pianos and Percussion with Murray McLachlan, and gave an acclaimed performance of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time at Chetham’s.

ANGELA ROWLEY, BA(Hons), ARCM, PGCE, MISM

Angela is a graduate in German from University College, London and after a period in teaching, began private singing training with, among others, Paul Hamburger, leading to the ARCM and a successful singing career.

Angela has performed throughout the UK and Europe and still performs regularly in recital, concert and oratorio. For several years Angela taught singing in a large comprehensive school and later in a Sixth Form College where she formed a choir, assisted in the production of musicals and initiated the development of music in the curriculum for students with both mild and severe learning difficulties.

Angela now has a thriving private practice, leading residential workshops and masterclasses and is Musical Director of Eccles Community Choir and co-ordinator and MD of Harmony ’96 choir.

Angela has worked with the BBC Philharmonic Education Projects including a programme in the ‘Discovering Music’ series on Radio 3 and helped to produce a piece of music performed by the Salford Family Orchestra and Chorus at the BBC Proms and is an adjudicator with the British and International Federation of Festivals.
