  • Indian Sculptural Art of the Kalinga Style of Temples of Odisha: a Historical Analysis
JOURNAL OF CRITICAL REVIEWS ISSN- 2394-5125 VOL 7, ISSUE 15, 2020 INDIAN SCULPTURAL ART OF THE KALINGA STYLE OF TEMPLES OF ODISHA: A HISTORICAL ANALYSIS Dr. Ratnakar Mohapatra1 , Hutasan Majhi2 1Assistant Professor, Department of History, KISS, Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, PIN-751024, Odisha, India 2NFST M.Phil Scholar, Department of Tribal Culture, Philosophy and Eco-Spiritualism, KISS, Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, PIN-751024, Odisha, India Received: 01 May 2020 Revised: 23 June 2020 Accepted: 04 July 2020 ABSTRACT: The artistic techniques of the Odishan temples are the most important aspect of the Indian sculptural art. The history of sculptures in Odisha is linked with the growth of temple architecture and shares the equal evolutionary practice as in architecture. The Kalinga Style of temples of Odisha is an offshoot of the Indo- Aryan Nagara Style temples of North and Central India. Itis a separate and distinct architectural pattern of structures.Odisha, the land of artistic creations, occupies a prominent place in India in respect of her temples, many of which are still in perfect state of preservation. The state of Odisha is a centre of art tradition as evidenced by the available of stylish elaborate temple sculptures. The extant temples of Odisha are technically depicted with various types of sculptures for their artistic embellishment. The temple sculptures form the main aspect of Odisha’s artistic achievements. The interior walls of the Odishan temples are generally plain but the exterior walls are technically decorated with different sorts of sculptures. A perfect coherence between the architecture and sculpture has been accomplished on the Odishan temples of Eastern India.
