Collegehumor's Comedy Music Hall of Fame Comedy Hits a High Note With CollegeHumor’s Comedy Music Hall of Fame IFC and CollegeHumor Unite to Salute Comedy Music on Friday, June 19 at 10PM – Hosted by Comedian Paul F. Tompkins – New York, NY – May 18, 2015 – IFC (IFC.com) and CollegeHumor (CollegeHumor.com) have come together to create the celebration that comedy music fans have been waiting for—CollegeHumor’s Comedy Music Hall of Fame. The hour-long special will honor the most important form of music— the type that makes you laugh. Hosted by comedy music super-fan Paul F. Tompkins (Bojack Horseman, No, You Shut Up!, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Curb Your Enthusiasm), the show will premiere on Friday, June 19, airing on IFC at 10pm ET/PT and on CollegeHumor.com immediately following the first broadcast. During this hilarious tribute, Tompkins will guide viewers through the best of comedy music and debut exclusive new videos featuring some of the genre’s latest up-and-coming stars. To help celebrate the craft that never takes itself too seriously, Tompkins will be joined for sketches and interviews by some of the best names in comedy music including Tenacious D, The Gregory Brothers, Trevor Moore, CDZA, Rachel Bloom and Patrick Noth, as well as comedian Scott Aukerman. And of course, the evening would not be complete without paying tribute to the godfather of comedy music himself, “Weird Al” Yankovic, who will be honored with an absurd induction into the Comedy Music Hall of Fame. All were directed and written by Caty Borum Chattoo, produced under the auspices of the Center for Media & Social Impact at American University’s School of Communication. All three projects were funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The first project, Entertainment, Storytelling & Social Change in Global Poverty, an experimental design study that examined the persuasive impact of the comedic documentary film, Stand Up Planet, was published in February 2015; it was funded under the auspices of Learning for Action, LLC. Borum Chattoo was also the executive producer and producer of the documentary, which premiered in 2014 in the United States and India. Lauren Feldman, PhD, Associate Professor in the School of Communication and Information at Rut- gers University, served as peer reviewer for The Laughter Effect. "I was in college," said Yankovic, "and a friend and I drove down to LA for the day, and auditioned for The Gong Show. And we did a song called 'Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung.' And the audience seemed to enjoy it, but we never got called back. So we didn't make the cut for The Gong Show." But while the Unknown Co mic and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine are currently brain stumpers in 1970's trivia contests, the accordionist who failed the Gong Show taping became the biggest selling parodist and comedic recording artist of the past 30 years. His earliest parodies were recorded with an accordion in a men's room, but today, he and his band have replicated tracks so well one would think they borrowed the original master tape, wiped off the original vocalist, and superimposed Yankovic into the mix. And with MTV, MuchMusic, Dr. Demento and Radio Disney playing his songs right out of the box, Yankovic has reached a pinnacle of success and longevity most artists can only imagine. We understand musicless videos as spreadable content that resignifies the consumption of the music video genre, whose narrative is normally structured around music patterns. Based on the analysis of the 22 most viewed musicless videos (with more than 1 million views) on YouTube, we aim, first, to identify the formal features of this meme video format and the characteristics of the online channels that host these videos. Second, we study whether the musicless video generates more likes, dislikes, and comments than the official music video. Finally, we examine how the musicless video changes the multimedia relations of the official music video and gives way to new relations among music, image, and text to generate new meanings. Keywords: music video, music meme, YouTube, participatory culture, spreadable media, interaction For the purposes of this research, the musicless video is considered as a user-generated memetic video that alters and parodies an official music video and is spread across social networks. The musicless video modifies the original meaning of the official-version music video, a genre with one of the greatest impacts on the transformation of the audiovisual landscape in the past 10 years.
