It’s not clear what the ‘new normal’ will be for Winchelsea town and church life, nor is it clear what the future holds for a monthly printed parish magazine. Lots of us have been learning how to Zoom. You’ll find a report here of a Literary Society Zoom meeting that’s already taken place and news of a Second Wednesday Zoom talk on 13th May. Planning for eventual public events still goes on, as can be seen from the item on Winchelsea Arts. There is a future to look forward to 1 where we can gather together again and resume community life. If you are a regular user of the town and church websites, you will probably notice that you have already read some of what’s here. You may also have received the email sending this issue more than once. This is because we are using the rector’s church email list, my list of people to whom I send the Forward Planner and Deborah Rodley’s list of magazine subscribers. The lists overlap and we haven’t yet consolidated them but will hope to do so for any future editions. Please feel free to forward the magazine to anyone you think would like to see it and who is possibly not on one of the lists. -

Peace is an Ecosocialist Issue: Some Experiences from Local UK Politics and Suggestions for Global Action Judith Watson* It is difficult to comprehend why the world should be in a state of conflict more than 25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and hard not to conclude that armed conflict is intrinsic to capitalism. There is a problem with the post-war settlement, forged at Potsdam and Yalta, yet it is the only settlement that we have. The United Nations is hardly succeeding, yet we cannot admit its failures without suggesting that we dissolve the community of nations and elect another one. It seems, as Noam Chomsky has long pointed out, that the USA in particular needs to have a bogeyman; if not communism then resurgent Islam. The ecosocialist implications of permanent warfare are almost too simple to state in an academic journal. • War can be caused by environmental damage. The Syrian conflict seems to have been exacerbated by the drought of 2007 to 2010. The uprising started in March 2011. • War is an environmental disaster in its own right. • War divides people when they should be united, and is an obstacle to building the necessary counter-hegemony for a transition to socialism and to a low-carbon economy. There is also the question of the armaments industry itself, a lucrative, though not essential, component of the industrial base of some capitalist states. I would like to argue that building a strong international peace movement is an important task for the ecosocialist movement, even as it is building up its own strength. -

At the time of writing there are exciting changes coming with the feeling that the rules of lockdown just may be able to be relaxed a little as we try get back to normal. The peak of infection may have passed but when might we be able to meet again in church? As most people will know, our new incumbent Rev’d Tim Gage is to be licensed in the next week which will mark a turning point in the life of our church. -

The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished. -

It is produced from the Sackler Archive Resource, a biographical database of Fellows of the Royal Society since its foundation in 1660. Generously funded by Dr Raymond R Sackler, Hon KBE, and Mrs Beverly Sackler, the Resource offers access to information on all Fellows of the Royal Society since the seventeenth century, from key characters in the evolution of science to fascinating lesser- known figures. In addition to the information presented in this list, records include details of a Fellow’s education, career, participation in the Royal Society and membership of other societies. Citations and proposers have been transcribed from election certificates and added to the online archive catalogue and digital images of the certificates have been attached to the catalogue records.
