July - August 2011 Newsletter AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES WITH A DISABILITY (AAWD) AAWD Website If you haven’t already, please visit our website where you will find an array of information including the latest sports news, event details, sports information and useful links to other National Sports Organisations and State Sports Organisations for people with a Disability. The AAWD bi-monthly Newsletter will now be distributed through the website providing disability sport news and updates from around Australia. To ensure you receive your free newsletter, make sure you click the ‘subscribe’ button on our home page. When you complete the subscription form, you will also notice a request for information regarding participation. Please take a few minutes to complete the form and help us collect participation data for disability sports in Australia. We welcome all feedback. AUSTRALIAN SPORTS COMMISSION 2011 ASC Media Awards Nominations for the 2011 Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Media Awards are now open. The ASC Media Awards recognise excellence in sports journalism and sports broadcasting and are a great opportunity to have outstanding work rewarded that has been published in Australia for the first time between 1 October 2010 and 5 October 2011. Nominations close Thursday 6 October 2011. This year’s presentation gala dinner will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday 29 November 2011. For further information please visit www.ausport.gov.au/media_awards WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL Women’s U25 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships The Australian U25 Women’s Wheelchair basketball team took silver at the 2011 U25 Women’s Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, unable to overcome the USA in their Gold Medal match-up (66-39). Bridie Kean top scored for Australia with 15 points, to go along with 7 rebounds, while Cobi Crispin added 11 points and 7 rebounds. For more details on the 2011 Women’s U24 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships please visit: http://www.u25wwbc.com/ www.wnwbl.basketball.net.au WNWBL The Victoria Dandenong Rangers have finished in first spot on the 2011 WNWBL ladder after winning 15 of their 16 minor round match ups. The Be Active Western Stars have finished in second, while defending Champions Sydney University Flames finished third, Stacks Goudkamp Bears in fourth and the MineCraft Comets in fifth. The WNWBL Finals will be played at Northern Suburbs Basketball Association, corner of Clarke and Oxley Streets, Crows Nest, NSW on 23 – 25 September 2011. On Friday 23 September, Victoria Dandenong Rangers take on The Be Active Western Stars (game 1) at 6pm and Sydney University Flames take on Stacks Goudkamp Bears (game 2) at 8pm. Saturday 24, will see the Loser of game 1 take on the winner of game 2 at 6pm. The bronze medal play off will be at 12pm and the gold medal match will be played at 2pm on Sunday 25 September. NWBL Round 7 of the 2011 NWBL will tip off 27-28 August, with home games to The Be Active Perth Wheelcats, Sydney Uni WheelKings and the Wollongong Roller Hawks. The last round of competition will be hosted on the 2 – 4 September 2011 with home games to Wollongong Roller Hawks, Victoria Dandenong Rangers and Sydney Uni WheelKings. Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association will host the 2011 NWBL Finals on 16 – 18 September 2011, at the Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre, 357 Browns Plains Road, Crestmead. BOCCIA 2011 Boccia Nationals The 2011 Boccia Nationals had great facilities, fantastic weather and the standard of Boccia played was a sign that the state coaches are on the right path teaching the players skills and tactics. This year saw new referees at the Championships assisting with over 132 games over four days allowing the standard of referees to improve with every Nationals. The Champion State Shield was won by NSW following the consistent performance of all ten representative athletes. Terry Cooper (NSW) was presented “The President’s Award’ after he was undefeated after seven games. For a full list of results please visit. www.boccia.com.au 2011 Boccia World Cup The Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA) Boccia World Cup 2011 will be held at the Jordanstown Campus of the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland on 18-26 August 2011. VOLLEYBALL 2011 ASEAN Para Games will be held 12 - 20 December 2011, in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, Indonesia. The ASEAN Para Games serve as an opportunity to prepare athletes for the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Australian Referee, Dr Stephen Giugni, will attend the games as a Referee Delegate and provide guidance and assistance to the officials involved in the games. LAWN BOWLS 2012 Wheelchair Sports Australia Multi Disability Lawn Bowls National Championships The 2012 WSA Multi-Disability Lawn Bowls National Championships will be held 4 – 8 June 2012, at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, Port Stephens, NSW. WHEELCHAIR RUGBY NWRL The NWRL came to an exciting end as the GIO NSW Gladiators secured their sixth consecutive National Championship title in Adelaide on 17 July 2011. Dominating from start to finish, the GIO NSW Gladiators cruised through the finals before beating Victorian ‘Coloplast’ Thunder 57 to 39 in the Grand Final. Footage has been produced into a 90 minute program providing coverage of the weekend’s highlights including the key games for the gold medal and the bronze medal playoff. The program has been aired on Aurora Community Channel on Foxtel, Austar and Optus Digital Networks on channel 183 during July and August, and will be aired in December to mark International Day of People with Disability. If you are interested in playing wheelchair rugby please contact your state Wheelchair Sports office or Wheelchair Sports Australia at [email protected] IWRF Site Visit AAWD and Wheelchair Sports Australia joined the Australian Paralympic Committee recently for the IWRF’s site visit of Sydney Olympic Park for Australia’s bid to host the 2014 International Wheelchair Rugby Federation World Championships. The outcome of the bid is expected in October 2011. REFEREES Wheelchair Sports Australia is always looking for new referees; with training and development provided for suitable applicants.
