A showcase of musical talent in Bruthen

There was a great turnout at the Mechanics Hall on 26th September to see two extraordinary performers. Neil Murray (above left) is an Australian musical legend and came to prominence with the Warumpi band in the 80s and has been performing and recording ever since. Todd Cook (above right) is an emerging Australian musical legend who fits his music schedule around his teaching career and football life— and now calls Bruthen Home. The crowd was mesmerised by Neil and Todd’s performances. They both magically weave storytelling and music to a transporting level. The middle photo shows Neil sporting the Bruthen jumper—look out for him on the field next year!!

Open Mic is back!!! The highly anticipated return of Open Mic was a very successful afternoon. There was a good-sized and very supportive crowd and there was a great range of musical talent - a few old faces and plenty of new ones. Come along and support your local talent on the last Sunday of every month—2.30pm start.

In the rich fertile soils of the Mitchell River Valley in East , world-class food is grown. This area supplies vegetables to fresh markets, fast food outlets, cafes, restaurants, cruise ships and various businesses along the value-added product chain throughout Australia and overseas. An industry that is valued at $150M+ (annually) and employs up to 2,000 people is at risk from a proposed mineral sands mine.

Located on top of the plateau, the proposed mine is as close as 350m from the Mitchell River with the vegetable fields as close as 500m downwind from the mine. 11sq kilometres of farmland is proposed to be mined.

Mr John Hine, one of the impacted horticultural business owners said, “The proposed mineral sands mine in Glenaladale is only 500m away from my veggie fields, on top of a plateau on the other side of the Mitchell River. The prospect of this mine is deeply concerning to us and we are speaking out now against that mine.”

“There is a very real risk of destroying the clean green image of our produce, both real and perceived. The risks of contamination to our veggies and soil from toxic dust plus having to compete for water as the mine will need over 3,000,000,000 litres annually, will potentially devastate our businesses and have health impacts on consumers of our produce and on workers in our fields.”

“We could create 3 times more jobs than the mine if that water was redirected to growing vegetables instead. These are long-term sustainable jobs.”

“If the Government is serious about the continued viability of our industry it must stop this mine from proceeding. Kalbar (the mining proponent) claims that when the Environment Effects Statement is submitted soon to Government it will prove the impacts on our industry will be low. We do not share their contention,” John said.

To inform their stakeholders about the potential risks and their concerns, a flyer has been prepared.

NEW WEATHER AND CLIMATE GUIDE TO HELP FARMERS MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS

Farmers in can now see how the weather patterns and climate risks are changing in the region, thanks to the Regional Weather and Climate Guide by the Bureau of Meteorology, FarmLink and CSIRO.

Climate guides are designed to help farmers make sound business decisions by giving the best possible climate data for their region.

Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester said the guides would be a valuable source of information for East Gippsland farmers.

“Our farmers know their land like the back of their hands, but in these difficult and unpredictable times these guides will provide direction and help them to make informed decisions,” Mr Chester said. “The ability to look forward and outline significant weather events such as severe drought, will help farmers to prepare and be proactive.

“Ultimately working cohesively will ensure that farmers aren’t left in the lurch and can still farm during difficult times.”

The guide will provide key information such as:

 Variability of rainfall from season to season and year to year  Typical timing of key events such as: the autumn break, wet season onset and the average date of first and last frost  The likelihood, duration, severity and return period of climate extremes, such as drought, flood, heatwaves and cold spells. The information will help inform decisions that affect business resilience such as whether to acquire fodder reserves, lease land in a range of climate zones, develop water storage and purchase loans or insurance.

More than 50 guides covering Australia’s existing Natural Resource Management regions will be developed and released to communities across the country by the end of the year. All guides will be made available via the Bureau website: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/climate-guides/ 2019 Buchan 54 Main Street, Flower & Arts 'n Craft Bruthen. Well, if you haven't noticed by now, the club rooms at the Bruthen Recreation Reserve have new solar panels installed. The 19.8 kW system is designed to feed approximately 15kW back into the system, with the remainder running appliances within the rooms. What this means for tenant clubs is hopefully a saving on daily electricity costs - so the benefits will be passed back onto not only Bruthen sporting groups - but the people of Bruthen and surrounding The Great Alpine Gallery in Swifts districts. Creek goes back to the future

The fitting of the solar system was made possible The Great Alpine Gallery is launching its latest th from a project grant by the Department of exhibition OFF THE WALL on Friday 13 Environment, Land Water & Planning (DELWP) September at 6pm. On the 4th and 5th of September, Tambo Upper Primary School junior students along with Buchan, Bruthen and Nowa Nowa Primary School participated in the ‘Trash Puppets’ workshop. The ‘Trash Puppets’ team taught all students about sustainable living and recycling. Each student, using a lot of creativity and recyclable materials were able to create their very own trash puppet. Students learnt how to make their puppet move by using techniques such as using a rod, using their hand for a glove puppet, using string or by creating a combination puppet that involved more than one of these ways of puppetry movement. We would like to thank the Trash Puppets team- Amy and Jess for all the great sessions of fun and creativity. Victorian Learning

Five students from Bruthen Primary School have been selected to participate in the Victorian Learning Commissioners Pilot Project. This project empowers students to lead an inquiry into learning within their school.

The students attended an introduction day at Keilor Views Primary School earlier this year. On this day the students under took classroom observations and spoke to students at Keilor Views Primary School about learning. The Bruthen Primary School students identified similarities in teaching practices –readers workshop model, and were very impressed by how the students could talk about their learning goals, how they were

The students then participated in a workshop to learn about how they will lead learning improvement at Bruthen Primary School. Together ,with students from 3 other participating schools, the students developed key statements that outlined their ‘Role’, ‘Purpose’ and ‘Legacy’ as Learning Commissioners.

Role Using evidence from our school to drive improvement, in an empowering environment where students have voice and agency.

Purpose To empower all students to be the ‘change makers’ of learning in their schools

Legacy

The students also built their understanding of the terms ‘Student Agency’ and ‘Student Voice’ to write their own definition Student Voice Student Voice is students getting a say or choice as learners ,to influence a change, by making decisions about learning.

Student Agency Student Agency is a level of response and leadership about learning They finished the day building an understanding of quantitative and qualitative data and devel- oping some leadership skills as they began to unpack some of their school’s data. When the students returned to school they continued to unpack the school’s NAPLAN Data, Students Attitude to School Data and PM and PROBE Benchmark Data. After learning how to interpret the data, students identified patterns and trends in the data and formulated some questions that they felt were unanswered in the

The students presented this information to Staff and to School Council and sought permission to run an inquiry to improve learning, in term 3. The staff at Bruthen Primary School embraced the opportunity for students to observe their teaching and to talk to students about their learning. They were also very excited to learn that the students would share their findings and make recommendations for an area of improvement, that they would co-design with staff and include as part of the 2020 School Annual Improvement Plan. This term, the Victorian Learning Commissioners worked with Helen Butler (Lead Instructor in the Vic Learning Commissioner Pilot Project) to develop an area of investigation. The students decided they wanted to focus on Reading as this had been an area the school had been improving over the last couple of years and they wanted to continue the work in this area. The students also decided they wanted to know how reading was taught in other classrooms, how students were feeling about reading and how well they could talk about what they are learning in reading. To help guide their investigation, the students visited each classroom to observe a reading lesson. They watched intently and recorded questions that arose during the observation. After their observations, student discussed what they had observed and the things they were curious to find more about. The students discussed how they would collate this information and decided to interview and film five

The students have since conducted their interviews and have transcribed the interviews in order to collate the data. From their inquiry, the Vic Learning Commissioners have discovered that students enjoy reading and choosing their own books. They are also enjoying the

Students know their learning goals and can talk about some of the strategies that they use to help them when they get stuck. They like to work with learning partners and understand being in a focused learning group helps them to use new strategies with support from the teacher. The Vic Learning Commissioners also identified possible areas for a deeper level of learning to be undertaken.  Deepen students’ knowledge of how strategies help them to understand what they are reading,.  Build students’ capacity to monitor and assess their progress towards their learning goals.  Teach students how to work more effectively with learning partners and in collaborations with their peers. Next term, the Vic Learning Commissioners will co-design an action plan. Watch this space! Bruthen Art and Information Centre Story

Did you know that the Bruthen Art and Information Centre is Bruthen’s oldest surviving shop and it is now resting on it’s 4th location in our main street during it’s century of existence.

In 1913, the building was opened as a branch of the Bairnsdale Pharmacy by Mr. Sol Green. Back then, it was located on the other side of the highway, near the skate park.

In the 1920’s, it was relocated by bullock team to the site of the present Op shop. This block had become vacant after the coffee palace was destroyed by fire.

During the Depression, a young qualified chemist named Stan Royal came home to Bairnsdale after completing his studies. He couldn’t find employment in his field of expertise, so he was working on the McKillops Bridge construction site.

Meanwhile, Mr. Green, the by now, elderly chemist had taken ill and closed the shop. Stan’s mum saw an opportunity for her son, and got a message to him.

Stan hurried to the hospital, sought and received permission to reopen the business and he operated it until well into the 1950’s. He was quite a character. In addition to dispensing medicines, he extracted teeth, cut hair and treated the injured. This building became a popular meeting place, particularly on Friday nights for the poker school and for putting a bet on the races.

During the 1960’s Vinnecombe’s sold fruit and veggies from the shop, later it was owned by Farquahar’s Plumbing. They sold it to the Anglican Church who used it to house their Op Shop. However, by the early 2000’s the Church Council saw this aging building as a liability and planned to demolish it in order to be replaced with a low maintenance brick shop.

A large community meeting was held in January 2006 which resulted in the win/win outcome in which the church donated the building to the Bruthen community on the proviso that they moved it off the site ASAP. East Gippsland Shire obtained a large grant to cover most of the costs of relocation and the renovation of the building. Local fundraising, volunteer labour and donations from businesses resulted in Bruthen’s own art and information centre. Drop in and have a sticky beak. The Bruthen Fire brigade has been busy preparing itself for the year ahead. The continued dry weather has a number of implications for Bruthen & surrounding districts. Noting that Bruthen is located in a high fire danger area, it is prudent that during the spring and summer months we remain vigilant of the risk and ensure that our fire plans are practiced and workable. Remember – only you can develop your own fire plan (a plan of what to do and when, in times of fire emergency); but anyone at one of the two local brigades is happy to assist and provide advice.

Some goings on.

Bruthen Brigade (along with most other units) has been conducting prep training in some basic safety considerations for the year ahead. This includes hazardous tree identification assessment and burn over and entrapment drills. This training is aimed at keeping fire fighters safe on the fire ground and returning back to their family and friends. We also have three new members who will complete their minimum skills and qualify as fire fighters for the summer ahead.

Community Bushfire Exercise. Was recently held at the Swan Reach Football ground and it was pleasing to see local residents from Bruthen, Sarsfield , Mossiface and Wiseleigh attend. Participants were given an overview of what to prepare for, what actions to consider and encouraged to develop their own bushfire plan – and more importantly practice it. A burn table demonstrated the spread of fire over terrain and reinforced some of the key considerations required when faced with a grass and scrub or forest fire. A number of CFA and DELWP appliances (pictured) were also on display for the event. Pictured are tankers from Johnsonville, Mossi-Tambo and Metung Fire Brigades

Fire Danger Period (FDP). The FDP is now is force. Fuel reduction burns are not permitted without a permit and the chances of gaining a permit are extremely slim. For residents who burn without a permit, if a CFA unit attends a fire (because the fire has been called in and reported via the 000 hotline), apart from extinguishing the burn, CFA units are required to inform Victoria Police. The possibility of further action may ensue.

Fire safety in and around Bruthen. On Sunday 15 September the Bruthen Fire Brigade was responded to an unattended camp fire along the Bank – in the vicinity of the bridge. First – this area of river is extremely high fire risk due to reed and general overgrowth of bushes and shrubs etcetera. The location is not a good place for a fire to be lit. Second – it was very pleasant 25 degrees and there was no need for the fire for warmth (food was not being cooked either). Third, the fire was left unattended and going as some young people responsible for the fire, decided to up and leave (with their eskies), to go home. The consequences of these actions could well have been devastating as the river bank serves as a fire wick back into town and too many properties that border it. As a rule - if you start a fire for cooking or warmth – then never leave it unattended and fully extinguish it when you depart. In the last few years a number of fires such as this and burn offs in nearby district areas, have escaped with months of firefighting activity and recovery ensuing. In short – let’s be vigilant and practice basic fire safety, be aware of the dry surrounds we live in and apply a good dose of common sense.
