Due to the success of the first year’s chargeable Garden Waste Collection Service, Borough of Poole is offering a discount for early registration to the 2013 service. Registration for the 2013 service opens on 1 October. All new registrations and renewals made before 14 December 2012 will receive a discounted rate of £25.95, instead of the full cost of £31. Anyone with an Access to Learning and Leisure Card will continue to receive a 50 per cent discount, making the scheme just £15.50 for one bin. All households can join the 21,000 that have taken advantage of the town’s easy and convenient service this year to remove all garden waste from resident’s homes. The reliable fortnightly service, which runs from March to November, ADVERT had collected 4,461 tonnes of garden waste by the end of August compared to last year’s 3,512 tonnes. The waste collected is composted naturally by a local company and turned into useful products such as soil improvers and high quality turf. Not only is the garden waste going to the right place it has also saved over £88,551 by not going to landfill. Cllr Xena Dion, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “It is important we continue to build on the success of this year’s scheme and by offering a discount to those residents who register early we hope to do that. I would encourage people to register before 14 December.”

Children, parents and local residents have played a major role in designing their play area, creating imaginative spaces where young people are free to explore and play. Their views have shaped the design and type of equipment, so children and young people can continue to access free play areas and benefit from fun and learning in a safe environment. Here are four of the play areas that have been transformed:

Hatchards Field Play Area, Alderney Hatchards Field Play Area, in Rossmore Road, was the final scheme to benefit from investment through the Playbuilder project. Officially opened in August, it offers a great new range of accessible play equipment in a lovely setting for young people of all ages to enjoy. A mini ball court has been included at the specific request of young people.

Parkway Play Area, This playground offers a new cone climber and basket swing together with improvements to the existing swings and climbing units providing all-round fun and entertainment.

Millfield Recreation Ground Play Area, Creekmoor The new aerial swing, cableway and cyclo-gym equipment improves the range of challenging equipment for a wide age range. An extra climbing unit makes great use of the natural raised area and with a picnic table and other seating it is a place where the whole family can relax and have fun. Additional developer funding was used to provide a new ball skills and rebound wall and youth shelter to widen the appeal of the area to different age groups.

Green Road Play Area, Poole Town Green Road play area opened in July 2012, using both developer funding and funds from Poole Housing Partnership. It boasts a completely new range of equipment, seats and a refurbished grassed area. A 4.5 metre- high timber pirate play ship is the playground’s centrepiece, creating a fantastic play experience for young people of all ages. More than £1 million has been spent improving play areas for young people in Poole. With 150 new pieces of play equipment to challenge, stimulate and enjoy, it’s a great time for playtime in Poole.
