We may have and lack freedom to 1) be, 2) do, and 3) have. These dimensions reformulate Locke’s categories, and are further complicated by placing them within the context of domains such as natural or civil rights. Here the question of the origins of rights is not addressed, but issues concerning how we may contextualize them are discussed. Within the framework developed, this paper makes use of Actor-Network Theory and Enlightenment values to examine the multidimensionality and appropriateness of animal rights and human rights for posthumans. The core position here is that rights may be universal and constant, but they can only be accessed within a matrix of relative cultural dimensions. The four novels Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion constitute the Hyperion Cantos by the American science fiction writer Dan Simmons. This galactic-empire, epic, science fiction narrative contains a plethora of literary references. The dominant part comes from the nineteenth-century Romantic poet John Keats. The inclusion of passages from his poetry and letters is pursued in my analysis. Employing Lubomír Doležel’s categorizations of intertextuality— “transposition,” “expansion,” and “displacement”—I seek to show how Keats’s writings and his persona constitute a privileged intertext in Simmons’s tetralogy and I show its function. Simmons constructs subsidiary plots, some of which are driven by Keats’s most well-known poetry. In consequence, some of the subplots can be regarded as rewrites of Keats’s works. Although quotations of poetry have a tendency to direct the reader’s attention away from the main plot, slowing down the narrative, such passages in the narratives evoke Keats’s philosophy of empathy, beauty and love, which is fundamental for his humanism. For Keats, the poet is a humanist, giving solace to mankind through his poetry. I argue that the complex intertextual relationships with regards to Keats’s poetry and biography show the way Simmons expresses humanism as a belief in man’s dignity and worth, and uses it as the basis for his epic narrative. Sin embargo, iban pasando los años y Dan Simmons parecía haber dejado de lado esa temática que tan brillante y satisfactoriamente supo abordar. Se diría que ese sorprendente y ameno tour de force que es LOS VAMPIROS DE LA MENTE (1989, Ediciones B, Éxito Internacional) le indicó que había mayor y mejor mercado en la novela de terror, a la que se ha dedicado prácticamente en exclusiva durante estos últimos años. Sólo THE HOLLOW MAN (1992), una obra con disquisiciones casi metafísicas en torno a la telepatía y la soledad, puede en cierta forma emparentarse con la ciencia ficción. El resto de lo publicado por Simmons durante estos años se inscribe en el género de la novela de terror en el que se ha convertido ya en un indiscutible maestro. Sin embargo, quienes nos sorprendimos y maravillamos con los dos primeros libros de la saga de Hyperion estábamos un poco molestos. Al menos así me sentía yo... Al leer las últimas obras de Simmons siempre me parecía lamentable que un talento como el suyo se perdiera en la simple búsqueda del best-seller más al uso. -

Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine. -

It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel. -

E-mail: [email protected] After describing Heidegger’s critique of metaphysics as ontotheol- ogy, I unpack the metaphysical assumptions of several transhu- manist philosophers. I claim that they deploy an ontology of power and that they also deploy a kind of theology, as Heidegger meant it. I also describe the way in which this metaphysics begets its own politics and ethics. In order to transcend the human condition, they must transgress the human. INTRODUCTION Transhumanism is an intellectual and cultural movement, whose proponents declare themselves to be heirs of humanism and Enlightenment philosophy (Bostrom, 2005a, 203). Nick Bostrom defines transhumanism as: 1) The intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally improving the human condition through applied reason, especially by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities. 2) The study of the ramifications, promises, and potential dangers of technologies that will enable us to overcome fundamental human limitations, and the related study of the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies (Bostrom, 2003, 2). -

DAN SIMMONS’S SUMMER OF NIGHT AS HORROR NOVEL KASABE SOMNATH DEVIDAS Research Scholar, Department of English, Shivaji University, Kolhapur MS (INDIA) There is some debate as to whether "horror" is a genre or, like "adventure," an aspect that may be found in several genres. Horror is a certain mood or atmosphere that might be found in a variety of places. Traditionally, horror was associated with certain archetypes such as demons, witches, ghosts, vampires and the like. However, this can be found in other genres, especially fantasy. If horror is a genre, then it deals with a protagonist dealing with overwhelming dark and evil forces. The key ingredient in horror fiction is its ability to provoke fear or terror in readers, usually via something demonic. There should be a sense of dread, unease, anxiety, or foreboding. Some critics have noted that experiencing horror fiction is like reading about your worst nightmares. Summer Of night was more about the "secrets and silences of childhood" than it was about monsters. Here are a few snapshots from that summer of 1960 in the "real" Elm Haven - Brimfield, Illinois - with a kid brother and some true friends who may (or may not) bear a close resemblance to some of the characters in Summer Of Night. Existing patterns of discrimination in voting around the globe could continue substantially “as is” for those with moderate enhancements. For extreme enhancements, voting rights could be challenged if the very humanity of the enhanced was in doubt. Humans who were not enhanced could also be disenfranchised if certain enhancements become prevalent. Voting will be examined using a theory of engagement articulated by Professor Sophie Loidolt that emphasizes the importance of legitimization and justification by “facing the appeal of the other” to determine what is “right” from a phenomenological first-person perspective. Seeking inspiration from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948, voting rights and responsibilities will be re-framed from a foun- dational working hypothesis that all enhanced and non-enhanced humans should have a right to vote directly. Representative voting will be considered as an admittedly imperfect alternative or additional option. ABSTRACT The figure of the cyborg, or more latterly, the posthuman body has been an increasingly familiar presence in a number of academic disciplines. The majority of such studies have focused on popular culture, particularly the depiction of the posthuman in science-fiction, fantasy and horror. To date however, few studies have focused on the posthuman and the comic book superhero, despite their evident corporeality, and none have questioned comics’ readers about their responses to the posthuman body. This thesis presents a cultural history of the posthuman body in superhero comics along with the findings from twenty-five, two-hour interviews with readers. By way of literature reviews this thesis first provides a new typography of the posthuman, presenting it not as a stable bounded subject but as what Deleuze and Guattari (1987) describe as a ‘rhizome’. Within the rhizome of the posthuman body are several discursive plateaus that this thesis names Superhumanism (the representation of posthuman bodies in popular culture), Post/Humanism (a critical-theoretical stance that questions the assumptions of Humanism) and Transhumanism (the philosophy and practice of human enhancement with technology).
