Tuesday 7th February Once again Steamin’ Billy invited its staff, customers and suppliers for a Jolly Away Day. On a beautiful, sunny morning the luxury Woods Coaches set-off from various Billy pubs and criss-crossed the East Midlands area affording the opportunity to meet old friends and new during the course of the day in a variety of different locations. I started at The Western (top left), where Landlord Phil Parker and a trio of regulars had gone for the fancy dress option, so for the rest of the day we had four “convicts” in tow (no comment!). A couple of bacon cobs were accompanied by a similar number of pints before boarding the coach for Hinckley, and the usual splendid Steamin’ Billy hospitality was to continue throughout the day. It was the first time in ages I’d been to The Railway (left, 2nd from top) at Hinckley and the first time since it has been a Billy house. I was really impressed with the sympathetic makeover and selection of beers on offer. We were hardly

there long enough to organise the obligatory Annual Beer Festival group photo before heading across town to The 16th, 17th & 18th June White Bear (below), which was equally welcoming. From Hinckley we moved on to The Coronation 15+ Real Ales & Ciders at Alvaston, a residential area of Derby. randomly placed bags of crisps as extra nibbles was a nice touch too! A less nice touch was losing my notes for this pub so though I THINK I had a Charnwood Sly Fox I can’t be entirely sure... Next up was the short run across Derby to The Wilmot Arms in Chaddesden, another new discovery to be enjoyed more thoroughly at a later date, before heading back to a “very- full” Parcel Yard which provided a variety of hot dishes to cater for all tastes. It would have been nice to have stayed longer but another engagement called... Incidentally, Cancer Research was the nominated charity A warm welcome at the Coronation for this event and £2000 was raised from the day.

Tuesday 7th February (part 2) Before I’d decided to go on the Jolly Away Day, Everards had invited me to the basketball stadium on February 8th. Not a problem until Leicester City had a game re-scheduled for the Wednesday and the basketball was brought forward twenty-four hours. I hot footed it from the Parcel Yard to Charter Street where another splendid meal awaited followed by a really entertaining cup game that was very even at the halfway stage but ended in Riders crushing their arch enemies, Newcastle Falcons 104-69. There are days when everything seems just perfect...

The Leicester Drinker www.leicester.camra.org.uk 11 ›› from pg 11 Saturday 18th February It’s always a sad occasion when a pub has to close, especially a particular favourite, so saying farewell to The Charlotte was a bit of a wrench. The cask ale had pretty much run out by 8pm but many customers stayed on a while longer. Hopefully it will rise again.

Wednesday 22nd February On a wet winter Wednesday there are few better options than a warm pub. With Leicester City’s away game at Seville on TV I decided to visit The Union, Aylestone and took the opportunity to take a look at the refurbished lounge. Double glazing and a contemporary makeover has really improved the feel of the place, much more comfortable and brighter without being overpowering. Landlord Steve and regular Darren Foster definitely approve of the changes.

Friday 24th February Leicester’s new city centre brewery, Framework, had a tap takeover at West End Brewery, so for a couple of days the pumps at WEB sold mostly beers from the Framework range. Brewer Andrew Goodliffe (near right) was on hand to answer questions together with Jonathan Briggs and others from the Framework team. On the other hand, the guys behind the bar thought that photo- bombing the array of Framework pump clips was a good idea.

12 April - May 2017 The Newsletter of Leicester CAMRA Branch Friday 17th March With the best part of three weeks taken up with Beer Festival duties, the next particularly notable excursion was the Western Park Charity Pop-Up Pub. Understandably, some entered into the St Patrick’s Day spirit both in choice of clothing and amount of drinking! Excellent.

On a recent visit to Northampton with a colleague who hails from there, it was interesting to get his take on all the changes. aturday 25th February saw a social trip to NW Leicestershire and South Derbyshire. SThe reason for the trip was to present the Waggon & Horses, Ibstock with a Pub of the Month award. Very much a traditional local we were welcomed as if regulars. The features of theAward pub, its regulars and the beer quality make it well worth a visit. The Bass was enjoyed by many andWinner the two guests were changed during our stay. A buffet was also enjoyed. Matt accepted the award and thanked CAMRA for the recognition and his staff and customers for making the pub what it is. The bus then ventured to the rural setting of the Tap House, Smisby. Here a brewery supplies Summers during our stay before moving on to the Tap House & Leatherbritches beers. We were John Thompson Inn at Ingleby followed by Ashby superbly entertained by Matt Allingham & Paul de la Zouch. Another thoroughly enjoyable day.

The rail connection clearly played no small part in commuting becoming a way of life for many villagers, a trend that has led to a declining number of shops, pubs and farms. The Lancaster Arms was known locally as The Flying Lancaster following WWll, and a large signboard outside the pub depicted a Lancaster Bomber in flight. The majority of planes used at the then nearby Desford Airbase were De Havilland Tiger Moth, although a Lancaster, diverted here after returning from an operation, overshot the flare path and hit two Tiger Moths. This proximity to the airbase is the assumed origin of the pub’s name but this hostelry is of the late Desford Mill Victorian period and a more probable reason is the aforementioned connection to the Duchy of Lancaster, indeed the reigning monarch was entitled to up to 18 wagon loads of hay from nearby Kings Meadow. The earliest recorded entry for the Olde Blue Bell was in 1846, although the building itself existed even earlier as three cottages, incorporating a bakery and a grocery. The pub was then a small establishment only half the size it is now, and consisted of a smoke room, small snug and tap room with an inglenook fireplace where regulars used to gather to chew the fat. The interior now comprises a central servery with public bar and The Bluebell Inn adjacent snug to one side, whilst to the other side is a lounge and dining room with low ceiling beams. A few outside tables overlook the car park and at the back is a pleasant small garden with covered pergola and hanging vines. I am told that the pub is popular with rugby supporters and frequently the big topic of conversation at the bar. Real ales available were Everards Beacon Hill, Tiger, Old Original Tighthead, and Gales Seafarers Ale. Hogan’s Picker’s Passion Cider was also available. Leaving The Blue Bell I turned left along High Street for about 100-yards then right into a jitty, opposite Manor Farm, called Forest Way.
