Solar Powering our Rental Estates 在出租屋邨試行太陽能發電

Solar energy is one of the most practical and affordable alternatives to fossil fuels. Since the introduction of the Government’s “Feed-in Tariff” in 2018, the Housing Society has been proactively exploring opportunities to harness solar power at our housing estates, demonstrating our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, and at the same time promoting the use of renewable energy in a densely populated urban environment.

Cho Yiu Chuen and Kwun Lung Lau were selected as pilot estates to install solar photovoltaic systems with the capacity of 21kW and 18.6kW respectively. The experience and data collected from these two estates will be useful for our next step in extending solar energy to our other estates.

As Hong Kong’s “housing laboratory”, the Housing Society has always endeavoured to innovate in our ways to develop properties. While we have already adopted precast method in our constructions, we are now exploring the possibility of off-site prefabrication, such as the use of Modular Integrated Construction (“MiC”). Piloting Vitasoy Recycling Programme 維他奶回收計劃試驗活動

To promote and encourage green living at our managed properties, HSC collaborates with local partners in piloting and experimenting new green initiatives. In October 2019, HSC kick-started the recycling of cleaned beverage carton together with Vitasoy, where Kwun Tong Garden Estate, Greenview Villa, Kingston Terrace and Kwun Lung Lau were selected as pilot sites with beverage carton recycling bins. 187 kg of cleaned cartons were collected from our residents.

The Vitasoy Mobile Education Centre visited our estates to raise awareness of the process and technology used in carton recycling.

Partnering with Tai Po Environment Association, HSC sets up the reverse vending machine to recycle plastic bottles and aluminium cans with compression and auto data functions at Kwun Tong Garden Estate. Residents can scan the barcode labels of plastic bottles at the machine to redeem gifts for supporting recycling.

This novel recycling mode was well-received by our residents. In the reporting period, about 21,000 pieces of containers were collected through the reverse vending machine.

Co-creating Age-friendly Homes 共 創「 樂 齡 安 樂 窩 」

ERC is scheduled to undergo full renovation in 2020. The new ERC will offer enhanced exhibition contents, tour options, training and consultation services that keep abreast of the latest users’ needs and technology trends.

Central to the Housing Society’s philosophy, we listen to our stakeholders’ views for every new initiative to ensure we build right things for the right people. As part of the renovation process, ERC organised a two-day co-design workshop in October 2019 to engage the elderly, caregivers, occupational therapists, designers and students of architecture, asking them to co-create new elderly-friendly show flats from the user’s and expert’s points of view.

During the workshop, participants worked in teams to design an age-friendly apartment that addresses the pain points of the elderly in a typical small flat in Hong Kong. The co-design process facilitated the exchange of experiences and knowledge, allowing designers to gain real-time feedback from users throughout the course of development.

The collective ideas and designs from the workshop will be incorporated into the new exhibitions at ERC, alongside with a selection of gerontechnology products and assistive equipment applicable to Hong Kong, which caters to the needs of an elderly at the different stages of ageing.

In collaboration with Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association, volunteers from the Alumni Club tailor-made Life Storybooks for elderly tenants living in Chun Seen Mei Chuen of the Housing Society. The six-week programme provided the volunteers invaluable experiences to bond with the elderly tenants, helping them to record their earlier lives and happy memories in the estate.

The programme has become a precious memory for both the elderly tenants and volunteers, with positive feedback from our community partner. The Alumni Club will consider to extend the programme to other rental estates of the Housing Society in the coming years.

Safe and Healthy Housing Estates 安全與健康屋邨

The Housing Society envisions to maintain a safe and healthy living and working environment for our residents and staff members. Our managed properties have participated in the “Hong Kong Safe and Healthy Estate Accreditation Scheme” organised by the Occupational Safety and Health Council, which assesses the OHS management system, policies and implementation in residential estates. Six rental estates and managed properties of the Housing Society have been awarded the “Safe and Healthy Estate with Outstanding Performance” for more than ten consecutive years. 1. Energy consumption from electricity is calculated based on the conversion factor sourced from Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of HKSAR Government. Energy consumption from fuels (i.e. diesel and petrol) is calculated based on GHG Protocol’s Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. 電力能源消耗量是根據香港特別行政區政府機電工程署的換算係數計算得出;燃料(柴油和汽油)的能耗是根據《溫室氣體 盤查議定書》的《企業會計和報告標準》計算。

2. The coverage of properties under management includes 20 rental estates and rural public housings, and 18 properties under various housing schemes managed by the Housing Society in Hong Kong.
