Presented at the John Whitmer Historical Association 41st Annual Meeting, September 27, 2013, Council Bluffs, Iowa. I appreciate being able to critique Joseph Smith’s Polygamy by Brian Hales. The three volumes comprise over thirteen hundred pages. There is a lot of repetition of quotations throughout the volumes. Since plural marriage is the topic of the volumes it would be appropriate to present a brief historical overview. In Latter-day Saint practice there was a gradual development in the custom of marriage. For the first ten years of its existence the church upheld the practice of one man being married to one wife. This position was published in the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants printed in the state of Ohio. The article indicates that a marriage should be solemnized in public and states the position clearly: "we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband."1 In the volumes there are repeated references concerning a girl named Fanny Alger, as a wife of Joseph Smith. One source used is by Mosiah Hancock, who was born in 1834. According to this story his father, Levi Hancock, was to perform a marriage ceremony between Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger.2 Oliver Cowdery, assistant church president, indicated there was a problem with Smith’s association with this girl. Smith, according to Cowdery, went back on his word3 and Cowdery withdrew from the church in 1838. -

Dating the Joseph Smith - Fanny Alger Relationship Identifying the exact year of the marriage or relationship between Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger is challenging. O my Father! thou that dwelleth In the upper courts of light; Open thou the way before her— Guide, O guide her feet aright.1 Several major studies have been published examining Joseph Smith’s polygamous wives.2 My research supports that he was sealed to thirty-five plural spouses.3 This article examines briefly their later reactions to their plural involvement with the Prophet and addresses the following questions: What percentage kept the faith he taught? How many later left the Church and the Latter-day Saints? During the passing years, did any look back and consider his Nauvoo behavior improper or inappropriate? BRI A N C. FANNY ALGER AND JOSEPH SMITH’S PRE-NAUVOO REPUTATION Brian C. Hales* FOR OVER 150 YEARS, skeptics from E. D. Howe to Fawn Brodie and beyond have painted a picture of Joseph Smith, even before Nauvoo, as that of a man who at least sometimes trespassed the bounds of marital fidelity. Such writers present data and their interpretations of it that support about a decade of intermittent dalliances before 1839 that seemed to contravene Joseph’s own publicly proclaimed standards of chastity. Such an image obviously depends, at least to some extent, on reading backward from the practice of polygamy in Nauvoo to the earlier period. But how accurate is that picture? If we were listening to the gossip in Quincy, Illinois, in May of 1839 about the Mormon prophet, who had been allowed to escape a month ear- lier by his Missouri jailors, and if we were to read descriptions by non-Mormon writers in local newspapers, what sexual morals would be ascribed to the Mormon prophet? Would the clamor of previous amours mar affirmations from believers that he was a prophet? Or would the complaints of naysayers focus on other issues? In this article, I brief ly examine all the extant accusations re- garding sexual impropriety and plural marriage against Joseph Smith—a total of nine—occurring before his 1839 arrival in * BRIAN C. The Emma Smith Lore Reconsidered
The Emma Smith Lore Reconsidered Linda King Newell everal years ago an unsigned Church News editorial on "Two Great I Women" praised Emma Hale and her mother-in-law, Lucy Mack Smith, for their loyalty to Joseph Smith: "They never hesitated to valiantly defend him, never recanted, never denied their testimonies of his work." While somewhat overstating the case (Emma was "always by his side, always loving, and forever brave"), the editorial concluded with the accurate assessment that Emma "made an invaluable contribution to the coming forth of the Church in these last days." * Excepting only a few paragraphs in a 1933 Relief Society Magazine,2 this short (500-word) Church News essay marked the first time in nearly a century since Emma's death that any article had appeared on her in an official Church periodical. Yet even this generalized praise drew the ire of readers steeped in conven- tional lore on "the elect lady." One reader went so far as to send in nineteen notecards of quotations dating from 1863 to 1955 which "documented" Emma as a selfish shrew, guilty of burning the revelation on plural marriage, attempt- ing to poison Joseph (with supporting citations from Brigham Young), con- spiring in Joseph's death, usurping Church property, attempting to gain the leadership of the Church for herself, and, finally, failing to measure up to the valiant Mary Fielding.3 LINDA KING NEWELL is co-editor of DIALOGUE. She and Valeen Tippets Avery, who wrote the essay which follows, are co-authors of the recently released book, Mormon Enigma: Emma Hale Smith (New York, Doubleday, 1984).
